why use select pine if going to paint over it?? yikes. the select pine is knot free, so it's actually the premier wood as far as pine goes. i just got that exact wood for wrapping my posts and beams on a deck and made a barn door. and it's actually a very quality product. but it's $35-$55 a board, depending on width. it stains and clear coats really nice. your project looks great, but just curious why paint? and hv u thot about using the the pine with the knots -that is 1/2 the price of select? those paint over well. again, good job. looks great!

Good question. I typically use Select Pine or Poplar, even when I paint because the boards tend to be straighter with crisp clean edges. Both of those types of boards generally have knot-free, perfectly smooth surfaces too. And, the grain seems a bit tighter on Select Pine vs Common Board. So, it’s a perfect base for stain or paint. If I used Common Board, I would save a few dollars per drawer. But, I’d spend more time picking long enough stretches of straight board, with the least amount of knots, spend more time filling all of the blemishes and knots in the board, and spend more time sealing the knots with oil-based primer to prevent tannin seeping through my paint. I used to use Common Boards to build furniture, but switched to SP or Poplar when I realized how much extra work I was doing. 👍 I still use Common Board, if I’m going for a rustic look.
