I've been doing chainless foundation for years (I've been crocheting for 45 years) and one thing I do is use a hook one size larger than what I will be using for the rest of the project. This helps keep the foundation from drawing in and it looks neater. I learned to crochet from my aunt back in the late 70's when I was 14 and she was a genius for figuring out shortcuts and tricks to maker her crochet look great.

That's so interesting because when I do foundation chains they are waaaay too stretchy, I have to go down hook size or two

Chainless foundation is ALWAYS my go-to when it's just a case of chaining and then the next row is simple sc, hdc, dc or tc crochets. I learned that 4 years ago and haven't looked back, lol.

Happy 50th! Fifties are fabulous years - enjoy! (One of the biggest gifts of life after 50 is that it’s official: You don’t have to give a flip about what other people think or what you’re “supposed to” do or wear or think. Turns out, other people don’t really care and most don’t even notice. What a relief. Life after 50 is more relaxed and you can really savor all the marvelous & magical little things in life.) Love your collab with Toni! You’re two of my favorite crochet goddesses. Many thanks!

I made that foundation chain for the first time recently for a baby blanket. It’s a great, stretchy foundation chain but it took me forever to get across! Practice will probably make it speed up I guess. Otherwise, I need to use a size larger hook for the foundation chain to avoid the dreaded trapezoid! That mattress joining stitch is magical. I made a granny square sweater and joined them that way. Worked great! Thanks, Elise. Oh, and I love the gradient greens of your granny squares! New color scheme unlocked. 😊🧶💕

I do the chainless foundation sometimes. I like it with color changing yarn, because it makes it look more even. It takes longer though, for me anyway, so usually, I just, make my chain with a hook that's a half a size bigger.

first of all, i was SO excited to see both you and toni in the thumbnail!!! heading over to her video immediately after this! i have an alternative tip to the chainless foundation -- i'm also very by the book and a little stuck in my ways, so i've found if you aren't up for the chainless foundation row, going up a hook size or two for the chain can help with the tension issue. i know people love the chainless foundation, but i've just never been able to make it work for me.
@EliseRoseCrochet

I make a lot of cotton dish clothes and the first row was always so difficult and hurt my hands. Making the rest of the dish cloth was fine, but that first row was tough. Once I started using the chainless foundation to make them, it became so much easier and I can now make them quite quickly. I am a soap maker as well, so hand crocheted dish/wash clothes go beautifully with my handmade soaps and I want to be able to keep making them.

The foundation chain hack had me sold on this book, and then the invisible join just doubled down! Great video highlighting the book! Is the Amazon link you have in the description an affiliate link? If not could you share one with me? Wanna make sure you get a little love for such a great promotion video!

I just made an oval granny stitch motif ( by trial and error)☺️ and also a corner motif granny stitch to fill in the outside edges. Because with the oval motif, it seems you can just keep adding more and more motifs, and never have a good place to stop adding. But I kept making them and ripping them out till I got it perfected. I am so excited to finally have completed a flat decent motif, because I searched everywhere to find a tutorial for an oval granny stitch and they are nowhere to be found.

Hi Elise! Great video. I learned some new things from the video, so I decided to order the book. I’m excited to get it. I was wondering if you could recommend a good basic beginners book. I have a close friend that I’ve been teaching but she would like a book to reference if she gets stuck when I’m not around. Thanks for your help!!! 🥰
