How to turn wooden balls. How to combine both the lathe and the drill press to make wooden balls. In this woodworking video we see how to set both woodworking tools to make the wood balls using a hole saw. Turning wooden balls can be tricky, but with this trick we can get almost perfect wood balls.

Very good idea, thanks for sharing. Near the end of the turning maybe you could do a small amount of hand lathing so the saw does not bind. I will try your method.

Maybe if your rounded the wood first it might run smoother, less drag on the outside of the hole saw. Or, when you get close, use a parting tool or SHARP chisel to open the outside gap a bit.

People say much the same when I take to wood spinning on my Lathe, with a 4 inch Makita angle grinder & tungsten tip rotary power chisel (Arbortec wood carver pro). It works so well I’m going to make a dedicated copy Lathe with the angle grinder and wood carver out of my 2nd Lathe & keep it for repetitive baluster type work, where it’s mounted on a cross slide that follows the desired shape template. I’m of half a mind to use CNC & stepper motors to automate it!

@antonmarkov2893
@antonmarkov2893 7 лет назад
the cutting tool has to turn way faster than the ball itself otherwise you get a point where the direction of cutting and direction of spinning is the same and that is why it might be rough.
@smoj304
@smoj304 5 лет назад
Like 'retreating blade stall' in a helicopter. At a certain speed, the rotor blade rotating backwards relative to the direction of flight is effectively at zero airspeed, no longer generating lift on that side, and the chopper falls out of the sky. Good pickup @Anton Markov. You could have a point there.

Wow, this is really awesome. It looked a bit scary though. Which rpm did you use on your drill/lathe? Backwards or forwards? And which rpm did you use on the drill press? How long did it take to make one ball? Did you not fear that during the process the block of wood/ball would come loose and hurt you? Thanks for sharing and I hope you can answer the questions. I'd very much like to try this too.
@pipspiper
@pipspiper 7 лет назад
RPM depends on the size of wood. The formula is: Work piece size (inch) x RPM = 6000 - 9000. If work piece is 3 inch, RPM should be: RPM = 6000 - 9000/3 = 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm range. Hope this helps.
@BomenJager
@BomenJager 7 лет назад
that is so weird what you told. that is the most weird formula i ever seen. i am a machinist myself and i can tell you the the rpm is a factor of what you are cutting and whit what material you cut it and also the diameter. the normal formula is : ø : π : (cutting speed) = RPM???? so as example if i wanna cut steel round 40 with a highspeed steel tool which is best for around 20meters. its : 20,000 : 3,14 : 40 = 159 rpm.
@hansdegroot8549
@hansdegroot8549 7 лет назад
I do not know if Pips Piper is right with his answer or BomenJager. I only know that in general larger diameters of material require lower speed than smaller diameters. And I also know that in general for wood is used higher speed than for metal/steel. But in any case I'd like to hear a reaction of Sergio himself because his speed was OK and I think that he knows which RPM he used.
@Mysli0210
@Mysli0210 7 лет назад
BomenJager is right, pips is just plain bogus. But the direction of the lathe don't matter in this particular situation as the hole saw is sawing both directions perpendicular to the lathe Z axis.
@hansdegroot8549
@hansdegroot8549 7 лет назад
But the example from BomenJager is for steel and in the video wooden balls are made. I suppose the rpm should be in that case higher than 159 rpm. Or not? And which rpm is meant for the drill/lathe or for the drill press?

you should actually spin the wood much, much slower, otherwise the speed of the hole drill gets canceled by the spinning of the wood on one side, while it cumulates on the other side. you could probably get a much better finish like that. and you wouldn't wreck your took that much...

@danielrose1392
@danielrose1392 7 лет назад
Great idea. There is one thing you could improve, your cutting tool is often gearing up with the work peace. Both move at the same speed which results in zero net cutting speed. Try running your lathe slower, if possible i would try about 100rpm but probably your drill can't go that slow.
@Dingbat217
@Dingbat217 7 лет назад
That's the same I thought, but I would speed up the drill-press to get the same effect, would that not work too? The increased speed of the hole-drill should also improve on the surface quality if the ball I would think.
@danielrose1392
@danielrose1392 7 лет назад
Morten not sure if you can improve the speeds on this setup, if it starts wobbling around, the quality will be worse. Also, you increase the damage in case the tool catches the work piece. With a more sturdy setup, I would run it faster.
