@Sayit AsItIs - teaching people what they don't already know is the entire POINT of teaching. Too bad you didn't KNOW that until I just TAUGHT it to you.
@googlevoicer
@googlevoicer 3 года назад
Sayit AsItIs - it’s not ACTUALLY quite THAT basic. I know a lot of people who have changed a car battery but wouldn’t know the difference between one that is it isn’t maintenance free. Or that a boat might have two. Or exactly how and the best way to use a dual battery switch. Some people just like to complain and put everyone down. Obviously those types of people aren’t big enough to learn something even when it’s a point that is taught to them with validity and are so far up on their high-horse that they have to argue their point even as they admit they were wrong. 🙄 Simply Sad ... reminds me of someone else I know of. #Arrogance #Lemmings #Sheep Yup, some if it was basic. And still things that can be learned from people still interested in learning about what might be a new hobby instead of just... 😶

I used to Buy Marine Batteries and always took care of them keeping them Clean and good clean clamps. My Batteries were never overcharged or had any abuse to them. The Marine batteries were not lasting but a little over a year. I quit buying Marine batteries because they wouldn't last and started buying Regular High amp car Batteries they were a Lot cheaper than the Marine batteries, I was actually getting over three years of use out of the regular car batteries with the same Routine that I had for using my Boat.

#Batteries...Great timing for this video. I am cleaning up the wiring on my boat this winter. I can’t believe some the horrible wiring from the previous owner (and some from the factory). Won’t be much of a visual improvement for anyone who is on my boat, but at least I will know that all the wiring is near and functional!

I would add; make sure the battery compartments are well ventilated prior to hook up to ensure area is clear of any potential fuel fumes, add Terminal connection. Then plug to power. Then I leave compartments open while charging to allow gasses to vent and to help keep Batteries cool while charging. I usually place a small fan near the battery compartments to give a little more circulation. My cranking battery is now over 6 years old. About 100 hours a year and a multitude starts between wake boarders and rafters changes

Storing the batteries for the winter is best in cool environment. I always keep my batteries in the boat for the winter, but they have to be fully charged, empty batteries will be destroyed. Instead of a bunch of battery switches I use a Ctek D250SE fully automatic switch, charger and battery isolator. It even contains a solar panel regulator.

A still good 3 y/o Marine battery is worth almost half the price of a new one in a boat yard sale.. Rotate batteries like you would tires. Solar chargers make a lot of sense. Isolation switches are a must have. Meters are cheap. Keep one on hand along with a small charger. better yet get a battery box with 12 v. and usb ports and carry an extra. Put that weight under the console if you can. I even have a power-paddle I can run off a cordless drill and I carry 3 oars in my Drift-Boat. It's just a prop on a stick with a drive shaft . So is my transducer for my Garmin. Rocks are unforgiving. There's a cage over my gas prop and lower unit too for tough duty.

Love your channel! Having owned boats for years and worked at a boat manufacturing facility, I learned a lot, but as the kids grew up and finances changed, I took a hiatus from owning boats for a while. Now back into the hobby now that the kids are older and the funding demand for college has subsided, I have been heavily studying what has changed over the years (as well as refreshing past things learned) and your videos are VERY helpful! :-) Quick question, can you do a TT video on livewells (how they work and considerations for using while underway, towing, single spot fishing, etc) -or- what options people have with solar charging systems instead of electrical chargers?

I have a Stealth 1 DC to DC charger on my boat and have found that it significantly increases the lifespan of my TM batteries. Once the starting battery is full, the engine charges the others, keeping them from fully discharging and allows me to get longer use of the TM (they've never died even during multi-day trips). I got almost 6 years out of the last set of batteries on this setup. I'm confident I would have gotten another season out of them had one of the leads from the charger not corroded and broke under the heat shrink, allowing them to fully discharge.

Three things - #1 - Keep terminals clean, and coated with an anti-corrosive spray or compound ( I use NO-OX-ID -A) #2 - Get a GOOD charger, stay clear of the NOCO "Genius" brand stuff, I've had those chargers ruin batteries, and so has a friend that happened to buy one before I got to advise him they were crap. I have a 10 year old Interstate 550CCA battery, hooked to a Minn-Kota brand 10A charger made for MARINE use it still has a 515CCA capacity when tested! #3 - Cable in a good main disconnect to the batteries, and USE IT! It will prevent any "sneak" currents from discharging it. Granted that I do have a direct connection to a bilge pump float switch , and the Minn-Kota charger, but all other distribution, including the motor, goes through the main disconnect.

It's also important to replace all batteries at the same time if they are wired in parallel or series. Some guys with bass boats have 3 batteries for trolling motor and 1 for cranking (like me). My Minnkota charger monitors all three batteries and will make sure all three are charged equal. I then have a separate charger for cranking battery. Replacing only one or two of the three batteries will force it to be at same level as the weakest battery. Hope this makes sense!

I've seen a number of boats sink due to poorly maintained batteries, thus dead batteries. Even one that was stored on a boat lift. A heavy rain fall, combined with a dead battery, which led to a lot of water weight in the bilge that caused the boat lift to break. The broken lift sent the boat into the water and the lift even punctured the side of the hull, and down it went. #Batteries

Ideally, the alternator should be wired directly to one of the batteries and not a battery switch. The other battery gets changed via an ACR from the first battery. The battery positive leads are then fed to the 1 and 2 terminals on the switch with the common going to your fuse panel. The battery switch is now used solely for selecting the battery you want to use and is not used to direct charging current. Most manufactures don't do it this way because it ends up costing more money running additional heavy gauge cables. Whenever I get a boat, this is the first thing I fix.

My center console has a soft raised bottom inside floor, its a super console on a '91 25' boston whaler outrage. On our boat, the port side bilge vent fins are facing forward. As we go forward, air gets forced into the bilge. The vent on the starboard side has fins that face backwards. As the boat continues to go forward those fins create a vacuum and actually draw air out from the bilge. Now I have see birds build nests in some vents that are not screened. That is really bad for many reasons. Seeing that there can be a voltage lose between a battery terminal and the case makes me think. Battery cases are black. What makes them black? Is it carbon? Carbon is a conductor. I analyzed this issue once when the company I worked for who make plating power supplies started using black hose to connect the heat sinks of the SCR's between the three phase coils. The use of the black hose caused a major lose of efficiency or Power Factor. The result was that we had to change to red hose which did not have carbon. Just saying! Anyway, thanks for all the good information here. We used to keep a boat at slip all summer in St Joe, Mich. One time when we returned after a week away, I found that our batteries were almost dead. I also found out that during the week, a storm came through and lighting took out some parts of the marina. I think it also took out our battery charger, which was a Raritan unit and too old to get a new circuit board. I loved that charger and I hated the replacement because it never went through the charge stages correctly. Again, something that was suggested in this video. Thanks Again

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 года назад
No, you can connect the trickle charger to the batteries through the battery switch, just hook it to one battery and then turn the battery switch to both ;) but the trickle charger might not be able to keep up if there is a draw on the batteries. I'd say to just put the trickle charger on one battery, then alternate back and forth between the batteries, depending on how long your storing how dead, etc
