That shooter panel sequence is from Corben's 'Rowlf', from Rip Off Press.

Read this book in 8th grade and took it out of the school library repeatedly. Decades later, I finally found a copy and like Ed, was blown away by the wave of nostalgia!

Man! I'll never forget that comic strip about reincarnation! It stayed with me ever since I first saw it at age 11 but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name or author of that book. I also remembered the Corben art, first time I ever heard of him. Thanks to you guys and the person who clued you into the name of that book!!

Yeah in some ways you kind of get bogged down by what you know, there is something so raw about these pages of all these people just going for it. Like I was drawing some pages back when I was single digit ages but I kind of stopped when I started to get better on a technical level, by 15 I was decent for my age at anatomy and basic proportions (maybe good enough for early 60s Marvel as a comparison) but exclusively drawing figures kind of neutered my ability to draw anything else especially pages of story telling because me being perfectionist there would be a strong contrast between my figure drawing and literally everything else, which put a block in mind for a while. Now in my early 20s I’m kind of getting out of my rut, and one of my tools I used with my obsessive perfectionist brain was basically just straight up copying other comics page for page. I started with that Strange Tales Kirby issue where Torch fights Captain America, and did a Ditko issue, a Buscema, etc, and found after doing so when I went to do my own compositions and my own pages that some part of those artists had imprinted on to me, and really gave me a feel and the confidence to do more work independent of reference. I guess it’s kind of like a school kind of approach like in Math class where the teacher shows you how to do a type of problem and you copy that verbatim and that kind of allows you to figure out the homework questions, by taking what the teacher showed you and applying that to a different problem.

I think that Corben page is from Rowlf (Rip Off Press 1971), Ed.

When I was a little kid in the 80’s I wanted to be a cartoonist too, and from 3rd-8th grade I made 29 issues of my own series. Granted the early issues were only like 6 pages each, and I never made any photocopies. But at some point I looked back at the early issues and was shocked at how bad they were as I had gotten better, so I redrew the first 12 issues or so with the exact same layout/dialog but just better drawings. Then my friends and I made 5 issues of a “jam” type comic where we each drew different pages. It was called Unlucky Larry and Larry died on every page. Ed and Jim would love all the over the top violence if nothing else! Wish I had stuck with it but pursued a life as a musician instead.

Thank you guys so muuuuch! I've spent almost 4 decades trying to remember what book this was!!! I only remember the color was blue. By the 5th page you looked at I knew it was the one! This book and Lee J. Ames "Draw 50 Famous Cartoons" were the 2 books that sent me down my path! This has distracted me all day!

11:30 Thought that looked familiar. It's Rowlf by Richard Corben. I've been doing so much research around this story, I had to kick myself from simply recognizing the style before seeing the name in the bottom corner.

Dang. Most of the art classes I took in middle/high school, the instructors were down on comics. I would have loved to have one that promoted and compiled our work in a printed comic.

'Ditto' machines were a brand name of 'spirit duplicator' popular in the US. In the UK the most popular brand was 'Banda'. These were a cheap way of copying before the cost of photocopies came down. They tended to produce purple ink that faded over time, eventually disappearing completely. They were popular in schools, and the spirit smell was an integral part of school life. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ccYLLzpeVnU.html
