NJ Chris commented: "Hiram, They sell these absorbing polymer crystals in stores like lowes and home depot in the garden section. They are little crystals that you mix with the soil and they gel up and hold water in for the plants... Do you think those gel crystals would work with alcohol? When they are mixed with water they have a very similar consistency to Sterno fuel."
KE4VVF commented: "Hiram, If I recall correctly, a few years ago you explained that you could refill a spent Sterno container with alcohol and it would jell up sort of like the original product. Did you have any luck using that technique? Thanks"
Here are links to other videos I've done that are related to the Sterno Refilled video. I've reloaded some of my old videos after I did re-edits because the music police marked a lot of them, "Video blocked in some countries." as a result of my music choices.
Please bear in mind that at the time I was still learning how to make videos, I still am learning. Plus the camera I used then sometimes made my breathing sound very much like Darth Vader.

Crush eggshells or sidewalk chalk for Calcium Carbonate. Add vinegar, heat, mix over and over on the heat until it clears up so you can see no cloudiness anymore. (there will be a salt looking substances on the bottom). Let it cool to room temp. Pour through coffee filter. What you get is sodium acetate. Add your denatured alcohol and mix. It will gel, it will light, you've basically made homemade sterno
@TopCat2021

Good idea,but the result is calcium acetate not sodium acetate. CA can be bought on Amazon and Ebay.

Hey Hiram, you said that you are looking for different kinds of cans to mix up your gelled fuels in. I took an Altoids tin, filled it with diatomaceous Earth and denatured alcohol. It boiled a cup of water in four minutes. The tin has an easy open lid that can be reused and you just close it to extinguish the flames. Try it, you'll like it.

I used the sterno cans, cleaned them out, stuffed them with rockwool, jammed a stainless steel mesh on top inside the hole and filled it with ethanol...works great. In fact the Origo boat/camper ethanol stoves use a simular principle with a 1.2 L "landmine" style tank in them which supposedl;y burns for 10 hours... In my country they sell these stainless steel holders which you can set a sterno can inside of and have an adjustable chaffing dish burner... I use one of those in a repurposed gas oven (which I stripped out the gas parts, insulated it very well to use in my camper van. Also a great thing to use...gets nice and hot, cooks anything I can cook in the house with an oven, even bread and pizza... great thing to have.

Hi this is what i did: I have an empty tin from some paint which looks almost like sterno tin, so i´ve just tucked in some toilet paper and added alcohol. Easy, cheap and fully functional :)

I saw that technique on another channel and that is really cool. The only problem is that the alcohol is so thin, it is easier for it to spill and cause a fire hazard. That's why I started looking into this option instead.

Hi, re. the polymer only absorbing after 4 days, and not burning: all commercially available liquid alcohol fuels contain a small percentage of water, so what has most likely happened is that after 3-4 days all the alcohol has evaporated, and the polymer has absorbed the water content of the fuel gradually as the alcohol has evaporated. As a result you get some, but a much smaller amount, of absorption, as there was less water to begin with (than when you add an equal amount of pure water). Naturally the water won't burn, so all you will get is a little crackle from the impurities in the polymer, and any dirt and dust that might have accumulated in the container etc.
@AaronBatteenA3
@AaronBatteenA3 9 лет назад
My guess is that the crystal absorbed whatever water content was in the alcohol, and the alcohol evaporated.

Thanks for the experimental testing! I wanted to try this for a long time but never got the time to do it. At least we now know the polymer will not absorb the alcohol in a sufficient matter and then it won't light. Great test!

Those crystals don't absorb alcohol. I'm pretty sure When he put those crystals in the alcohol the alcohol also absorbed a bunch of water out of the air, And then over the next 4 days all the alcohol evaporated away leaving just a little bit of water which the crystals then absorbed.

Polymers are substances whose molecules have high molar masses and are composed of a large number of repeating units. There are both naturally occurring and synthetic polymers. Among naturally occurring polymers are proteins, starches, cellulose, and latex.

A very interesting video. I live in a third world country and cooking gas is very expensive only second to electricity. Methanol is relatively affordable and it occurred to me that this could be used in a proper cooking stove. I have seen videos of marine stoves that use some material that absorbs the fuel and then burns with a steady blue flame. I have also seen a video where kieselghur is used to absorb the fuel and then allows the fuel to burn steady and in a controlled manner. The stove illustrated was tiny not enough for a cooking stove. Do you have any information on using this kieselghur with alcohol in a proper cooking stove?

I refilled a burnt out sterno can with 91% isopropyl alcohol and after 4 hours it was still burning. My can had 2 lids and I burned through the smaller lid. I did not remove anything from the used up can, just added the alcohol to whatever medium remained in the sterno can. I filled the can to the top of the remaining medium and let it settle, then added more to fully saturate the medium before I used it. It seemed to use about 6 ounces or so of the 91% alcohol. Wait for the bubbles to release after filling. That way you know the medium is pretty well saturated. I did not try the lower grade % alcohols.

MAYBE it took 4 days for the alcohol to evaporate and then the silica(?) absorbed whatever water was diluted into the alcohol and left over...

No to the methacrylate, similar to diaper absorbent. You will dehydrate the polymer crystals, water is not the same as alcohol, alcohol will suck out the water and if you burn it, it will give off a black soot smoke, just like burning plastic. burning alcohol requires a hot wick to keep the flame on. The polymer will unlikely work.

Hiram! Thanks for this direction. I was stoked to have made a nice slushy batch from these instructions and was planning to pre-fill a bunch of cans. However, when I returned the mass was quite liquified. Do you know what might cause this? In one of your posts you had a week-old batch that appeared to have been stored in an airtight container. My batch did indeed have the air-tight lid on. It was made with 95% EA, natural, because I am a perfumer and I keep literally gallons of it around. Help?

Darcy Leepearson: I’ve seen those in Canada as well. Those are a fantastic idea. I’ve got some paint cans here, but I bought them for something else that I’m working on. It seems to me that if anybody wants to use one of those but he’s concerned about the coating that goes on them, it might be worth looking up to find out what’s in that coding, and the other thing that occurs to me is that if that person was less than impressed with the contents and didn’t want to use it in the house, it might be possible to just burn it off outside, To make it more acceptable for indoor use. Just a thought.

Those watering crystals are highly toxic acrylic polymers. They're used commercially as a layer underneath paved roads to keep the ground from shifting and cracking cement every time the humidity changes from underneath. It is highly questionable whether they are even healthy for plants, as all of the testing done with plants ended before plants gradually absorbed the Toxin. All plants are robust at first and then slowly die at their own rates. Interestingly enough, mushroom mycelium will never grow directly into them. I'm pleased to know that it has some level of effective fire resistance but only because burning that garbage would be extremely bad for anyone nearby, as acrylic fumes are poison ☠ Great channel. I'm curious to know if you've ever experienced with Graphine as an additive. It gives off Infrared heat in response to heat all sources, amoung a great many other things far to numerous to list here. One might think of it as pure Carbon on steroids 🌋

Hi Hiram, I was just going back thru your videos after some years looking for some answers to a few questions. I was just wondering if you could do this same type of thing with silica gel and alcohol. I kind of thought not. I have about a half a case of Sterno chafing dish warmers that are filled with ethanol and use a fiberglass wick but have a screw top not the kind you pry off and was thinking about refilling and using them with different types of fuels, mainly for emegency power outages.

I remember watching a show about a fireman that noticed at a building fire (daycare I think) that he noticed the pile of diapers were not burning. Pretty sure the jell absorbent in diapers is the same as soil moist. Anyways the fireman developed some kind of thing out of the crystals. Sorry don’t remember much more

You probably used a lower % IPA solution. 80% IPA is 20% water. When you mixed this with your polymer it absorbed the 20% water and then you waited a few days for the alcohol to evaporate.

@daphneraven6745
@daphneraven6745 Год назад
Alyssa McDonald: your comedy sort of old, but denatured alcohol burns without residue. Other alcohols might not. If you’re using a pot you can always cook, because it never comes into contact with any part of the flame. But if you want to roast food, that’s generally done over coals, not over flames. In the case of denatured alcohol, that might not matter since there’s actually absolutely no residue. But from almost anything else, you’re looking at ending up with a coating of soot or residue on the food that you would be consuming.That could be particularly bad in the cases of certain fuels..
