Make Your Own: 'Heinz' Ketchup

Crouton Crackerjacks

A super simple, easy recipe to make your own Heinz like ketchup. No cooking involved. Just mix, refrigerate and bottle.
1 - 6oz can tomato paste
1/2 cup water
3 TBSP white vinegar
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/8 cup (2TBSP) brown sugar
1/4 tsp ground yellow mustard powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt (or to taste)
pinch of ground clove and ground allspice
If your ketchup does happen to gel on you because of inadequate priming of the onion powder, mix it with a little more water.

I was looking for an easy ketchup recipe. Something that did not involved: Planting the tomatoes, bending, cooking for 12 hours, etc. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video.

Its really good, I add eritritol insted of sugar and vine or apple viniger insted of classic white viniger and black organic salt insted of classic)) - and it becomes even healfier. Also insted of onion powder you can add fresh onion blended with hot water in blander.

EXCELLENT RECIPE !!! I double the vinegar and use 1 tea. salt. THIS TASTES LIKE THE REAL DEAL !!!! My son is a ketchup snob, so I made this, let it sit overnight, then put it in the empty bottle of 'his brand'. I didn't tell him till the bottle was almost gone --- he couldn't tell any difference !

Hey I enjoyed the opening. He explained very well why he would make his own ketchup and even so there are still comments asking why he would make his own ketchup so It was completely necessary for a video. You can always just search for recipes and read them if it bothers you that much when someone wants to add personality to their video.

Where I live (Nebraska) a can 6oz can of tomato paste costs 38 cents. Often, it is on sale for 4/$1. Perhaps you live on the coast where everything is more expensive. And maybe you'd like this better than Heinz if you actually made it. It's not just me that thinks the real deal is much better than the chemical shit you buy in the store.

Thanx so much. This was about as easy as it gets. It's now 2020 and Ketchup in Ontario, Canada is about 4 bucks a litre when it's on sale, and upwards of 6 bucks when not. You can buy store brand for about 3 bucks but it tastes like store brand. :P This, all in, is STILL about .50c for around 400ml and tastes way better. @Brenda Strand Rigdon said she tripled the recipe for everything except the tomato paste. I'm going to give that a try today

I honestly have no idea. What I do know is that petrol-based vinegar is made to replicate natural vinegar so it should be the same. The final result is nearly identical, it's just where they come from that's different. Same is true with sugar. Sugar from sugarcane and sugar from sugar beets all comes out to be plain sugar and is pretty much identical, it's just sourced from different things.
@croutoncrackerjacks
@croutoncrackerjacks 12 лет назад
Thanks. You can buy 'all natural' white vinegar at most supermarkets although it MUST state on the label, 'all natural'. The ingredient listed is 'white distilled vinegar from corn'. Many of the generic and larger bottles of vinegar are indeed, a byproduct of the petroleum industry. It pays to spend a little more for the 'natural' stuff.

all tomato type products should really be heated up before consuming simply because all caned products (especially tomatoes) are allowed to have a certain percentage of insects (you do know they cant get them all before grinding and mashing, right?)... so you want to heat it up to make sure everything is cooked before eating

I took your recipe and had to modify it for keto , so i took 220g can of potato paste , half cup of lukewarm water and i had no onion powder so i just juiced little bit of fresh onion , i let it sit for 15 min . For spices i did not add brown sugar , i did not add mustard powder and cinamon but i added oregano , basil , garlic powder , pepper powder and salt . 1 small spoon of apple cider vinegar and after i mixed all together i boiled it for 10 min or so . It same out tasting like pizza sauce very good , maybe you should add more water if you are going to boil it so it does not become like paste tho .

Thank you so much for this recipe! Since I am eating low carb on the advice of my doctor, I substitute 1/4 tsp. of stevia or 1-2 Tbsp. of erythritol for the brown sugar, but the rest of the spices are spot on, this tastes very much like store-bought catsup. Question: if you use a slice of raw onion instead of onion powder, do you still need to 'prime' the onion? TFS!
@shakaama
@shakaama 11 лет назад
for an even healthier ketchup, sweeten it with carrots instead of refined sugar [brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses in it, it's not healthy] and fennel root. You can save even more money but growing your own tomatoes, and bottling the ketchup during tomato season.

The next morning the flavor improved but only a little. The tinny taste of the paste is still there so into the trash it goes. But I'm pretty confident that frying the paste first will solve the problem. Oh, and great tip about blooming the onion powder first! Back to the kitchen!
@croutoncrackerjacks

Try a different brand of tomato paste. Hunts is the worst for tasting like the can it comes. I've rarely had issues with the generics but try that first.
@nightskylights4501
@nightskylights4501 2 года назад
That's terrible and very wasteful. You could have just tweaked a little, like actually cooking it. People don't understand how much it takes to make anything. From precious water to grow the tomatoes, to all the materials used, like the can itself, paper for packaging, gas for transportation(the same gas that pollute the air we breath) and all the hard working people who work in the fields to make one product.

I'm curious about the "sweetness". yes, we've all been raised on corn syrup, but how can only 1/8'th cup of brown sugar make all the rest of this mix sweet? Pretty much every other ingredient is sour. I've bookmarked this, because I want to try it, but I still don't see how it can be that sweet.
@dalemills8052
@dalemills8052 3 года назад
Want it to taste sweeter? Reduce the amount of vinegar. His already has Way less vinegar than store bought, which is why they add so much sweetener(HFCS).
@generalxanos
@generalxanos 3 года назад
@@dalemills8052 I'd rather have less hfcs, and more corn sugar. Oh, wait... the ACG tried to get the government to declassify it as high fructose corn syrup and call it corn sugar, that was the point. How about we have less corn-based sugar in general? Is that an option? I prefer cane sugar. No less sugar, but more from cane than corn.

Recipe: Double size in METRIC measures: 340g Tomato Paste 1 Cup Water/2.5 dl 1 tsp Onion Powder 4 Tblsp Brown Sugar/Sugar/Allulose (Or to taste) 4-6 Tblsp Vinegar 5-7% or Apple Cider Vinegar - OBS! - Maybe try with 4 Tblsp first - Some ppl in the comments complain it was too much 1/2 tsp Yellow mustard powder (Dijon mustard or other mustard you like may be good too) 1/2 tsp Cinnamon 1/2 tsp Salt - Pinch of Clove and Allspice (spices as you like) How to: - Boil water and onion powder together and let it sit for half hour (priming) - This is IMPORTANT so it does not turn the ketchup into a gel. (If the ketchup "gel" on you because of inadequate priming of the onion powder, mix it with a little more water). - Put tomato paste in a bowl - Add the primed onion powdered water - Add all the other ingredients, including vinegar of your choice - Whisk together (add water in very small doses if it's too thick for your liking) - Cover or fill in jar/bottle and put in a fridge over night Mmmm.

OK, I made this, and I didn't care that much for it, bland. Certainly not as good as the store bought stuff. How ever I added another tsp of brown sugar, another Tbls of vinegar, a 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper, and 1/2 tsp of garlic powder. This improved it, to MY taste. I'll see how it tastes tomorrow after the flavors have had a chance to blend. I think maybe next time I'll sauté the tomato paste a little to get rid of the just-out-of the can tinny taste.
