First off, choosing Sting was something that kept me here. :) Great video on the stages of making a wallet. I like that you have a specific series of steps to get to the end product. I am working on getting my steps down and since many of my projects are stand alone, I have had to figure out the order of operations to make the end product look like it is a piece of art, rather than a 3rd grader's art project gone wrong! Watching your videos helps me to get a better feel for the stages and order to have a better flow with making my pieces. Plus, learning from your finishing touches has helped my pieces to look more professional. thank you for your videos. Cheers.

@@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan Good job on your wallet. I've been doing leather work for 50 years now and keep an eye out for quality craftsmanship. My only question I have for you is why don't you oil your projects? Remember that wetting and dyeing your leather pulls the natural oils out of your leather. Unless you're actually oiling your work and not showing that in your videos. Good job nonetheless.

@@jessemarvin3217 Thanks Jesse, and you are correct. It's best to apply oil if tooling. This is one of my earlier videos, so I can't remember if I applied the oil or not, but most likely didn't film it. Thanks for commenting!

I know this video is 'old', but I just wanted to thank you for making it. I'm new to the craft and I've seen a bunch of videos, but you did some unconventional things that look like they'd be a lot better (for me) than what I've been trying. I'm going to try them out and see if they help. Thanks so much!

J. Renard I wouldn’t know because RU-vid muted the audio. That can only mean the music was copyrighted, which makes this video illegal to watch.

Hi Chris. I've been watching a lot of your videos and I see a pattern that doesn't make sense to me. You die and then edge your pieces. Is there a secret leather working secret as to why you don't edge first and then die the piece? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about working with leather and you are truly an inspiration. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan 8 лет назад
Hi Jessica, It makes more sence to trim edges before dying. If you dye, then trim, then you'll need to dye the edges again, which adds to your work, although sometimes I get caught up in my work and miss a step and need to go back and correct it. This is probably what happened while filming this video. Thanks for pointing this out! :)

How did you input the lovely stamped pattern on the front of the wallet? The video showed how to do everything except that. Hmmm...no sound, even though my speakers are on.

It appears he's using eco flo dye if anyone is interested. Also dye your edges before using gum cause it seals off the leather and your dye just dries on top. You can use some edge paint but dye won't work after using gum trag. I love making wallets. I do mine a little different like using thin goat skin to line them so you didn't see the stitching inside.

Since then the problem has been fixed. Try checking back again and see if you still have any problems, if so please let me know and I'll see if I can help. Thanks for writing!

Hi. I just finished a wallet made out of veg tan leather, and I suspect I should have applied a finish earlier on in the process. I used Fiebings Professional Oil die, and am now worried that applying the finish will streak the finished product. Right now the dye is quite uniform. It seems like any finish with water will streak it, so what would you suggest? You mentioned "sheen" in another video, does that mean Resolene or Neat-Lac? Thanks!
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan 7 лет назад
Sorry, I'm very familiar with using Fiebings oil dyes. I currently mix my own colors with water based stains and antiques. Although I usually never have to worry about smearing provided I give the stains time to set and dry before applying a clear matte or glossy sheen finish. I also don't use resolene or neat-lac. I currently only use Craft Japan clear matte or glossy sheen, although eco-flo also sells a similar product. I also apply very thin light coats of the sheen. Applying to much can cause you stain or dye to run or leak colors. Once you've applied the 1st coat of a sheen you shouldn't need to worry about any smearing. I usually will repeat the application of the sheen 3-5 times until I get the desired effect.
@RobPolson
@RobPolson 7 лет назад
Thanks. You might be referring to "Super-Sheen" from Eco-Flo. I think maybe the test samples I have done did run because the leather is so thin, so it saturates quickly, even if put on lightly. I guess I will have go at one of these options but wanted your opinion first, since I have put some time into making this wallet...and didn't want it botched on the last step. Wouldn't be the first time though, and it's all in the learning process. Thanks again for your input! :-)
