Pigment powders from model companies are a fantastic tool, and worth the cost in many cases. There is an awesome, much cheaper, alternative that gives you more colour variety though. Using chalk pastels to make your own pigment powder on demand is a great option for for hobbyists and model makers.

Dunno if you've ever been, but I suggest a trip to a chiropractor. I work a physical job and mine has been a life saver. At my worst I was crawling to get around my house, pulling on pants and socks with an unfurled metal coat hanger, and my chiropractor got me up and dancing (figuratively, not literally. Me dancing is suuuper ugly.) again in no time flat. Hope ya feel better soon, bud.

Tip that helps. Buy some cheap low grit sandpaper (Dollarama sells some). Tear off a small piece and grind the chalk pastels into it. It makes quick work of the chalk pastels and you don't have to worry about large chunks coming off.

I created my assortment of colored pigments by completely grinding up each piece on a piece of 80-grit sandpaper (inside my airbrush booth to reduce dusting). I then stored each color separately in a small container I got in an 8(?) pack at the dollar store. Total for everything was less than US$15 and they have served me well! I understand that the solid pieces store nicely but I didn't want to start "shaving" whenever I need a pigment, and the small containers store nicely.

the colours you get from chalk: are they vibrant as real pigments or are they less saturated?
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 2 года назад
@@inexistent3rdchimera673 In a sense chalk sticks are pure pigment while the "real pigments" have fillers and binders to provide texture and work well with fixatives used by modelers. Chalk is intended solely for use on paper, held down either by the paper's tooth or with artists' fixative spray AFAIK and to have no perceptible texture. Also, chalks come in a staggering range from black and sedate browns and greens to day-glo/UV fluorescent hallucinogen-drug-grade colors, way more than "real pigments" sold to modelers. Also also, chalk is way WAY cheaper.
@SvenEnterlein

@@inexistent3rdchimera673 I have no comparison, unfortunately, but they do look very nice!
@ImCassy
@ImCassy 2 года назад
@@inexistent3rdchimera673 It does depend on the quality. You'll get better pigment from higher quality pastels like Pan Pastels, but you'll pay a premium for them. If you need more pigment you can always layer it using spray varnish in between.

I grew up using pastels to shade action figures.. I always thought it was kind of a lost art since most use airbrushes to create those effects. I thought they looked really good. We'd use matte varnish to seal them and it made the colors pop even more. If you use a smaller stiffer brush and scrub the chalk directly you can get a lot more control when shading like a fold in a cape etc.
@jorgealarcon2704
@jorgealarcon2704 2 года назад
I used mineral spirits for sealing pigments or dry pastels for years, until i discovered ultra matt varnishes. Either mix them with it and apply, or airbrush after applying in dry. Works like a charm and mantains the super dusty look.
@AvoidTheCadaver
@AvoidTheCadaver 2 года назад
I've been using vallejo's air brush thinner to bind it. It's great if you want the pastel to matte down onto a surface. But when I use green stuff world's rolling pins, I been using pigment powders to create that dirt between the paving stones effect. However the matting down of the pigments does create a less than optimal effect because it all sinks into the grooves. To bulk it out I use tile grout mixed with a bit of fine sand then seal with the thinner, keep doing that until the desired bulk is achieved then top with the pigment powder and reseal with thinner.

Snow/ice related injuries suck. About a month ago I took a tailbone ride down my back stairs and I'm still not 100%. - The substitute pigment powders idea is brilliant! Rubbing the pastel on a fine wire mesh strainer or a mini wire mesh sink drain cover will create a fine dust. Set the wire mesh over a jar like a small mason jar. I use small mason jars to store the dusted pastels so I don't have to chase around the dust. Clean up is easy with water, just be aware that some pigments are staining (just like in watercolor and acrylic paint).

Be careful, soft pastels have different additives to hold the chalk together to make a stick. It may work very well for crafts or even water color, where it gets enclosed in glass or a heavy clear sealer. Would not recommend soft pastel power for replacement for artist pigment. There are good videos on understanding various size of grains of pigment that change the color dramatically. There are various grades of pigment, is part of the reason why we have very expensive paint to cheapest paint. You get what you pay for. Iv'e searched for bulk artist pigment and come up empty handed. You can purchase little jars of high quality pigments that only mix about 300 ml of paint. Gives you only a slight savings over high quality paint and takes several hrs to mix and mull to perfection. Yet you gain control of any mediums or additives you may want for differing paint performances. As in New Holland is very stiff compared to Michal Harding or Vasari. Natural Pigments company uses only super refined linseed oil in their high quality paint pigments with no other additives. Yet, use it or loose it. The tubes of paint will dry up fairly quick. Some pigments need walnut oil or poppyseed oil, while earth tones do just fine in refined linseed. Linseed oil typically dries to the touch in about 3 days, allowing various coats. While other oils can take weeks or months depending on you adding faster drying mediums into your mixes. The great upside of mulling your own paint is the great learning about paint pigment and all the various reactions as the old masters did. The pure satisfaction could reflect on a higher quality of your art work. Yet it will definitely take valuable learning time away from your canvas.

tip from an art school grad: (unless you need all of the powder at once) instead of crushing the pastels in a baggie or bowl and then having to transfer the dust I recommend breaking a piece up into a couple pieces with the baggie method (hitting it against the ground a few times) and then putting those pieces into an old pill bottle. with the cap on, shake the bottle to produce dust as-needed. you can add some small rocks or metal beads to the bottle to help break it up easier but it's optional. you can also experiment by putting multiple pieces of different colors into one bottle as a blending method for a family of hues. no mess solution and easy to store!

What a wonderful idea, thank you for sharing! When I use pastels for painting I would either use art fixative or the cheaper version: hairspray on it. It keeps the look but gives it much more staying power. Not sure if it’ll work on minis but might be worth a try?

Hey Jeremy great timing. Was just talking about pastels on a livestream and couldn’t remember who’s video I saw on using them as weathering powders will tell my friends on the next stream Sunday at noon eastern time anfield layout in the loft. We do modeling for model railroading and tabletop gaming terrain.

Get better soon. The worst pain can come from the back. Rest and time.

I know your pain. I am literally sitting watching this with a back massaging pillow, as I've done mine in DIYing our first house. Hope you have a fast recovery dude.

Damn! Jeremy, if I were your coworker I would have sent you straight back home with those back pains. This video makes me feel some of your pressure as a self employed RU-vidr, with mouths to feed and quality sponsors to keep. Sending you internet love! ❤
