In this 2 part video series I will show you how to build a simpler version of a 5x5x5 RGB LED Cube. The driver circuit only consists of an Arduino Nano and the programming is rather simple due to the FastLED library.

Great video as always! Really inspiring project, I didn't know these LEDs existed in this package. I would appreciate a programming tutorial, because I find it hard to develop algorithms for my 4x4x4 RGB LED Cube.

+Bernhard Hofmann The Arduino Nano costs $2-3, so MSP430 isn't really cheaper than that.

Nice video! A suggestion for straightening wire: Try using a drill. Put one end of the wire into the drill, and hold the other end with whatever you want (if you bend it you can even use your hands). Then run the drill. Don't go too fast though, or the wire may break. This makes the wire more sturdy than it originally was in my experience. I was also wondering how the data is clocked in. I see there are Vin, Vout, Din, and Dout pins. How is each bit clocked in? Is there an internal clock? If so, what is its frequency? Otherwise, how does the LED know new data is available?
@wonhoyi1164
@wonhoyi1164 8 лет назад
Hi, I have build a same cube following your instruction. Same type of data corruption occured, So I thought I would have to solder all the horizontal connections of VCC and GND for LEDs but, it turned out to be different frequency from power supply and arduino. (I was powering up arduino with USB port then). After some testing with few LEDs on bread board, it worked fine once they had same power source. Thanks to your video, I managed to build one too. (it doesn't look as nearly neat as yours though!)

GreatScott, custom animation programming would definitely be super cool mate, especially the animation of letters and numbers. Is there a way to control the brightness of individual leds? This could be useful for replicating ascii art in light, but naturally a larger cube or flat matrix would be best for such things and I imagine that the same principles and techniques apply and are scaleable to create whatever you desire.

Hi, great videos I always enjoy watching them. But I have one question about the power wiring. Although I have wired everything as you described, I still have data corruption at the third layer. I have tried changing the voltage slightly and replacing some faulty looking led but to no avail.

Great tutorial, I'm going to have to build myself one of those :) One thing though; Why didn't you export the micro USB of the Arduino Nano to the base case? That way you would only need to hook up a cable to re-program it instead of lifting the top off.

Very good tutorial! Are there any design considerations of doing a larger Arduino-based cube using ONE data pin vs. one for each layer? Also, it's been almost 4 years since your video and I have found VERY FEW cube projects that uses addressable LEDs (PL9823, WS2811, APA-106, etc). Care to comment?
