Makeup & the menopause

Menopause and makeup is something Im frequently asked about by my friends and clients so I thought it would be good to do another makeup film specifically aimed at those struggling through the menopause and not knowing where to start with makeup. Hormonal shifts during the menopause means that some of our tried and tested usual makeup now doesn’t work for us anymore. Primer, longwear foundation and not using red lipsticks or blushers are a just few tips that I’m going to talk through in this tutorial. You might find the Menopause makeup tutorial film from last year helpful to watch too. I’m looking forward to reading your comments and will try and reply to as many as possible.
Apologies for the camera focusing issues this week. It’s not your eyes!

The aim of Speed Beauty is to introduce you to and provide you with techniques for make up, skin & hair care products. I only show you products that I love and really believe in. Each product I use is heavily researched before deciding to make a film and I try and provide you with as much accurate information as possible. The views on Speed Beauty are my own and are based on having personally tried the products myself.
The products I use in these films are either bought by myself, are part of my professional kit or they’ve been sent to me by PR companies for review. I am not currently paid for producing the films you watch. Some of the films contain affiliate links in the description, but not all. If you are happy to click on these links to continue support Speed Beauty that would be very lovely, thank you.
You should always research whether the products I recommend are suited to you. Everyones skin is different and I offer no warranties and don’t claim to be a dermatologist. Some products are really expensive and an investment purchase so it’s always wise to test product on your skin to check for allergies or adverse reactions before you buy. Some make up & skin care brands offer you samples to take away & try. This is always a good idea before deciding on an expensive purchase.

So refreshing to have someone talk/teach/suggest makeup for women who are menopausal and post-menopausal. It certainly beats going to a make-up counter where a teenager suggests all the wrong products because they either don't understand or don't have enough information on how to help us gals who are now in our later years. A big thank you to you Caroline.

Was using water lauded double wear but my skin these last 6 months has gone drier so make-up just not sitting right. Tried the nars, love it but my skin is so hard to share match. Hi Caroline. I started perimenopause at 39 and had my last period at 46 (I'm now 48). The last year before the periods stopped was the worst with up to 15 hot flushes a day and I have rosacea and eczema prone skin that is very dry/dehydrated. Long wear foundations didn't work - I'm so pale that finding a foundation to match is a real struggle anyway, but longwear foundations made my dry skin look terrible. Green primers and colour correctors are great and I use them all the time. Being really accurate with a tiny amount of longwear concealer was the best compromise I found. It's so much less makeup than a full face of foundation which sweated off and looked patchy. If the concealer disappears slightly it's not so obvious as it's only in small areas. Instead I emphasised my eyes and just rode it out. I'm past the worst and now only have the occasional flush, which is so much better. A tinted sunscreen can help as they are designed to form a film over the face, or self tan working as a semi permanent makeup also helps for those who want more evening out of pigment. This is the first Autumn I've felt the cold and I had to buy thicker clothes. The last few Winters I was never cold lol. I really SWEATED through the latter stages and no makeup would have lasted through it tbh. I tint my brows and lashes which helps with definition and doesn't smudge or sweat off. Best wishes to all those still suffering.

Joan Rummell Yes, I second that. Since menopause I get polka dot pores whenever I apply foundation - have tried lots of foundations and primers - am about to give up 😬 Edited after you said, that some skin eats make up. I feel that is what happens, even if I put a good layer of foundation on🤔

As a former makeup artist who has had her own skin struggles and made organic cosmetics... I years ago decided whatever didn't work for me I would tinker with and reformulate... lipstick being a big culprit. I don't like the texture and finish of most lipstick. Just in general (except for a great long wear soft matte one from a brand that was about called Impulse Cosmetics), so as I used silk powder, pigments etc I removed all my personal bullets from the tubes and mixed until I got a better consistency. Now you have to remember that the end result will still change in texture for a while after mixing as the powders will be absorbing the moisture etc... so you want to be sure it's not just solid and too dry... It can take some playing about. But if you have lip/eye/face safe pharmaceutical grade pigment you can use strings usually in blush shades and all sorts. It's great. I use a NYX lip pencil in Natural with this on the top. I use a brush to diffuser the edges (always) and then if I have time I use a tiny pencil brush with my own custom blend powder foundation on it to lock in the edges and further diffuse them. You can use a good powder or even a good skin tone eyeshadow in a pinch for this 😊. Then use my lip brush to go over carefully the edge again with the pencil and lipstick. It's a massive difference. Not only that I have such a long wear lipstick it only needs some touch up in the day. On nights out it's a godsend. I am thinking of new concealer adventures as I am not as youthful around the eyes now... And am wanting something that looks good aaaaaaaall day... So this is how I found your channel on these searches. I love the ambience and energy of this channel. I don't think we ever stop learning or picking up tips and I am now going on 42. I have been doing skin care and makeup for decades. We never stop learning, and this for me is great. Hope you're all well, and if you want a few of my coloured pigments to play with let me know and I am fine sending them 😊 x

Thanks for tips. I have v oily skin & don't like liquid type foundations. I can't even do BB ones etc - I have tried! To be fair, I didn't wear foundation til my late 30s when I started getting some redness. I use mainly powder mineral foundations (other times use Laura Gellar B & B or IT cosmetics celebration powder foundation - both good) & just across my nose, cheeks & any oily bits. I find if you buff for quite a while, it has a v natural finish on me. Btw I used to have some hot flushes. I have been taking Boots menopause tablets on most days & Sage Complex from Victoria Health on the others (as it's more expensive & also you have to take 3, which I sometimes forget lol, & Boots ones you just take 2 in morning - easier!). Been doing this about a year & have hardly had any hot moments & those I have are mild. Also recommend portable 3 speed hand fans. You can get them on Amazon. I recently got one that looks like a perfume bottle. It's great as you can shove it in your bag. Emma x

I really appreciate this because I am just so frustrated with makeup and my face lately, but I don't think you should apologize for making this non-sexy. My brows have thinned to almost nothing and they take forever in my makeup routine now, and I'm so effing bored with them. My eyes are completely frustrating, too. In menopause I have developed allergies to a lot of my shadows I used to use and I get an eczema-like rash. When I can use shadows I find it depressing because my lids have sagged in an uneven manner, and I can't just make them look fantastic so easily as I used to. I used to have such outstanding eyes that I could play up in many different ways, but my lids don't allow for that anymore. The reality is that fun is gone, just like my estrogen, and I need simple, single color eye rountines that don't frustrate and depress me. You say you don't mean for this video to be un-sexy, etc. but the truth is I just feel really frustrated and annoyed with makeup, which used to be so much fun, but now i'm looking in the mirror at some harsh reality. We women don't always have to be sexy and fun and happy about everything. We have enough pressure already. But I think I'm going to go buy that shadow stick. Thank you.

I don't just have a hot flush, or glow. I literally pour with sweat from my head, face and back of my neck. I have tried so many products, copious amounts of setting spray and nothing keeps my make up on. I started peri at age 43. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and the chemo rushed me through menopause and now I'm post. I'm still heavily sweating after 9 years. I am now stage 4 secondary breast and the sweats are more intense and I have to have a fan on the table to even put my makeup on. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I've always been into makeup and beauty but I've found I have to wear less now, especially foundation. I have to wear fake tan to give my skin a bit of colour and it also helps with the redness. I'm at a loss at what to do anymore. I'm about to try acupuncture to help calm it down 🥵 my face and hair which I've had to cut short as it gets soaked with my face. It's like I have hyperhidrosis, it's that bad. I work in the medical industry for film and tv so full PPE at all times which doesn't help.Thank you for the video, I always look forward to watching you xx

Michelle Pennington Hi Michelle, I have had BC as well and am now on tamoxifen hormone treatment for 10 years, will probably be on some form of hormone therapy for the rest of my life which gives hideous menopausal symptoms. I found that the biggest thing that affects my hot flushes and night sweats is what I eat and drink: caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, sweet foods, fatty food and chocolate all provoke the hot flushes and like you, I literally drip with sweat on my face, back of neck, back and stomach. I take a hand-held fan with me everywhere, even in the middle of winter. I find that anything I put on my face (cream, SPF and especially foundation) also cause an immediate hot flush which lifts the product straight off my face again! It’s incredibly frustrating. Steering clear of or minimizing intake of the food and drink that causes hot flushes can help a little, although I notice that even when I am fasting I still get some hot flushes, just fewer and not as strong. But of course, you also have to enjoy life as well so if you can’t imagine like without chocolate, coffee and wine (like me) you can prepare for the flushes when you know you will get them. I’ve seen a recommendation that some of the Japanese SPFs which are lighter can allow the skin to breathe, but I’ve never yet found a foundation which doesn’t immediately lift off my sweaty face when I get a flush! I also take SERELYS to try to minimize the hot flushes, but not sure if it really works. Good luck sweetheart ❤️❤️❤️

Nowadays there is no longer a need to suffer menopausal hot flashes in patients who cannot use hormones because of breast cancer. there are already antidepressants that help a lot and are not contraindicated in these cases, such as escitalopram, desvenlaflaxine and sertraline, the last two we can only raise blood pressure a little. talk to your doctors because you shouldn't suffer more than what you have already suffered in the treatment.

I was supposed to have acupuncture this week as it's supposed to be very good for the flushes but I received a call on the morning of my appointment cancelling. The Dr's wife took ill the day before not sure if it was covid so now waiting for 5th Nov xx

Do you think we should skip the highlighter as we age?

Not at all but avoid powder ones and products that are too sparkly. Even facial oil works a treat.. maybe I should do a film in highlighters 🤔

Can you recommend tubing mascara’s that are a little cheaper. They are hard to find, I asked a lady in Boots and she had never heard of them. Thanks.

ELF has a tubing mascara that’s called No Smudge Mascara. Very affordable, doesn’t smudge and very affordable!

Actually if I’m not mistaken Boots’ own No7 Stay Perfect Mascara is supposed to have tubing formula. Then there is Clinique Lash Power, Mac Extended Play, Maybelline Snapscara, and I think there is even a L’Oreal one but for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it. Word of advice: I use and love Mac and Clinique but they give you a very natural look, or maybe they could use more coats (I don’t, so who knows).

It’s only the title that is unsexy ;-). The products and the looks are wonderful. I must say that I struggle with eyeshadow cream sticks though. I have tried different brands including Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown and they always crease. Any suggestions?

Everything creases on me. I have tried many primers. Wayne Goss said it best when he recommended to check your makeup during and just touch it up...sometimes fingers is all that is needed. That said, good eyelid primers help. Also, I love Armani and Chanel liquid shadows; they seem to last quite a long time.
