Here’s part one of the 100 Pound Turkish style bow build. This one uses a 1” Schedule 40 PVC pipe cut down to 47” and the finished bow draws 105# @ 28” and 120# @ 30”. In this video we’ll be flattening the limbs, shaping the tips, handle, and recurves, and string the bow with Paracord. We’ll also be doing the first weigh-in of this bow. Next time we’ll finish the bow by applying car wrap vinyl and a vinyl handle wrap. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

If I do, you definitely need to shoot it! I managed 27" today (90 pounds). The dynamics of shooting a bow this heavy are so different. Thanks for the tips! The action feels more like prying open the jaws of some massive beast than drawing back a bow.

What is the width of the bow?
@hamasmillitant1
@hamasmillitant1 Год назад
@@Mojo_jojo386 says Schedule 40 PVC pipe in description i believe its on thicker side of 1 1/2 inch pipe the parts where its been flattened it would be up to 45% or 50% wider than its starting 1 & 1/2 inches(probably more like 40% because of thickness of pipe) so probably just over 2 or 2.2 inches at widest points when you flatten a ring (or pipe) you can get up to 50% width increase, minus the tickness of the wall of pipe/ring i think schedule 40 is about 3mm walls. the charts for schedule state its collapse weight at 1.5 inches is 375 PSI (hence the flattening to harness that without it being to ridgid)

Black ABS sewage pipe is probably what he means by making outdoor ft I think. It has UV light resistance that PVC pipe dose not. Also gray garden plastic pipe has UV light resistance. But I like the black. It is shiny so for hunting I would wrap it in some dull cloth or camouflage.

I can't wait to build one of these! When I do a bow, I trace the curve of the 1st limb onto paper and match the second limb to the tracing. I have had really good success 1st time tillering that way.
@hamasmillitant1
@hamasmillitant1 Год назад
it can be easier to do both lam at once. (thats why so many modern bow designs have power limbs on a handle) attach both pieces of wood to each other/both pvc limbs to each other with 2 sided tape & clamps for wood or bindings/clamps for pvc )clamp them so you can cut heat one side cut/bend it rotate clamps cut other side(or in case of pvc and bending i guess youd tape and clamp them side by side or ontop of each otehr depending on bend you where doing then heat rather than cut, so long as you kept it flush cutting, & have enough binding points with pvc, (could probably use zip ties or cotton thread binding if you where careful not to overheat them) you should have exactly the same angles and taper points on both lam that way & i saw a guy using socket handle system the other day that would lend itself well to a pvc pipe. so you could 1/2 length of bow for transport (youd just get a gauge smaller pipe than u where using a gauge higher pipe each 15com long cut a 3cm washer from the pipe your working with & fill the smallest diameter pipe with something like hard set expander foam to make it ridged then glue the washer you cut to middle & once its set cut a guide grove into it down to washer at least 1mm idealy 2mm thick(use the highest thickness inter pipe u can if using expander foam if filling with epoxy its thickness wont matter)glue the larger gague pipe over the top you have a ridged socket that each of your arms will fit into, glue the bottom arm in and put a small screw through upper lam in line with the grove 1cm up, then cut away screw on outside so its flush with lam & file screw to length/size/into a smooth stud inside lam to make sure you dont get any movement in arm & should have a solid fold away PVC bow :) puuurffect for survival :P

@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 8 месяцев назад
With this same type of PVC (formufit furniture grade PVC), the bow is fine for daily shooting and as long as cared for like a wooden bow, will last as long if not longer. formufit.com/products/1-in-sch-40-furniture-grade-pvc-pipe-black?variant=42060190318741 When using plumbing pipe, the better the purity and impact resistance, the longer the life of the bow. I test the ends of plumbing pipes by hitting them with a hammer. If I can flatten the end without it breaking or shattering, I know it will make a good bow.

i like the tip shape, the reason historical tips where shape they are is the material dynamics of material used it follows that pvc would have a different tip shape to go with its material property's very cool bow, i could see having some pvc pipe blanks in my workshop just to have for ppl use to make a first bow with after watching this ps when stringing heavy bows its easier to have a long cord through both knocks you can stand on with both feet, string bow ready like you had it then pull up on bow stretching it with long cord and slip the bow string on pull long cord out also your weighing is the hard way, you can put the bow on 2 pegs and pull it down with a winch running around a pully on floor or wall it you have pegs in wall also if you make your siya section even more ridged maybe glue and bind a 10cm strip 3mm by 1cm of steel to back of siya with a leather bridge to make it fully ridged and youll get more leverage on draw/make it easier to draw, if the tip shape gets to you (i didnt mind it i quite like its shape), you could also make it look traditional/point it with the steel reinforcement to back it up (although entire dynasty's in china had broad tiped siya sections so it is also traditional shape for some eras to have close to what you have. if you put a decorative brass sea shell or something on siya tip it would be pretty similar look slightly shorter same kinda poundage as warbows in at least 1 or 2 eras in china asia & middle east)

I made one and the first turned out great. The second and third time I tried it took hours and hours of shaping because for some things are just not showing you because you heat one area another area Benz and if it's just out of place and one little tiny spot you're going to spend hours reshaping and reshaping and reshaping and it just won't fire straight or be straight! That's a fact. I can build anything and I wasted three days of my life trying to build one of these and now I am out of 50.00 bucks I spent trying to make one of these. Just go buy one! These don't shoot good enough to hunt or practice anyway

Couldn’t you avoid misalignment and form a handle at the same time if you just made a mold out of two vertically screwed in 2x4’s to press the handle section down into while you make the arms of the bow? That way, once you do one side, the handle just slides in and you’re automatically aligned for the next arm?

Great tutorial! Very detailed. Have you ever tried using steam instead of a heat gun? I've used a simple valet clothing steamer (like some hotels used to offer) to make some some wild bends in 3/4" sch 40 in the past. It worked like magic, as the steam could soften about 1.5-2 ft of the the PVC to "limp noodle" flexibility in under a minute and never burned or cracked the pipe because the steam, though extremely hot, was also moist, keeping the pipe from drying out. It also heated the pipe evenly as it was heated from the inside, which also prevented finger prints messing up the exterior . I'd imagine you could prob. make a similar one simply with an old pressure cooker with a 1/2' copper pipe fitting threaded into the lid. All you gave to do, once the water gets to a full rolling boil, is put the end of the pipe you want to shape over the 1/2" stub sticking up for 30-120 seconds, (depending on the pipe diameter and wall thickness your working with) & and twist or bend like spaghetti! (almost ;-) If you decide to try doing shaping this way remember a couple safety points. #1 that steam is HOT! Hotter than the air coming out of your heat gun & because it's carried in the moisture of the water. The heat will, therfore, remain in the pipe longer, so you'll have longer working time, but youll need to wear gloves and proper PPE! #2 to minimize splash out of boiling water , only fill the water level up half way in the pot as to minimize boiling water drops. #3 Use cloth gloves if you can, as leather gloves can disintegrate and turn to goo when exposed to steam (think hide glue) and will get all over your work. I used a thick pair of cloth garden gloves over cloth jersey gloves. I hope you get a chance to give this method a try as it'll save you a LOT of heating time compared to a heat gun. (+ simple hot plates are WAY more durable that heat guns! i'm sure, given the number of bows you've built , you've had to replace or repair at least one of those HF specials cuz I've gone through like 4 of em since I started watching you. Haha :-)

Don't you burn your fingers with the heated pvc?

That is just beautiful, I love it. Concerning arrows, in general, do you think it would be safe or practical to make arrows using pvc of smaller diameter?
@Gamerdude535
@Gamerdude535 3 года назад
Pvc doesn’t get quite thin enough for arrows I don’t think. Even 1/2 inch pipe is just a tad too thick on the outer wall, and warbow weight wood arrows are like half an inch thick in diameter.

There is a 1/4" PVC that would work, but it is heavy and flexible so not great for heavy bows. Fiberglass driveway markers spine (measurement of flex) around 100-130 pounds and weight close to 1,000 grains. I've shot them with great results from warbows and fishing bows.

@@BackyardBowyer Huh, I hadn't thought to use driveway markers but I'll have to go cut some down later and try them on the longbow since it's only about 50lbs. For PVC arrows, I was thinking more along the lines of cheap and durable arrows for my nephew to use for practice with his 15lb youth bow. Although, the arrows I made for him using dowel rods are pretty dang cheap and they last him a while so I suppose it's more an experiment idea than anything. Thanks for the reply!

@@Gamerdude535 I certainly wouldn't try making warbow arrows with PVC, I prefer to stay out of hospitals and for my hands to be free of plastic shards lol

I know your specialty is pvc bows but I think you should make a full composite of this draw weight.

Thank you for showing how it done. I was thinking about a plastic tube and fiberglass build by adding the fiberglass rods used for "refective" driveway makers that you stick in the ground. They are very long and thin but very flexible and springy. Adding them to a plastic tube bow might be a game changer. What do you think about adding two or three of these to the inside of a flattened tube?

I’ll be dusting off my flattening jig now. Don’t know I’ll go as crazy as 100lb but a 70lb trainer would be great to keep the arms and back in shape during the winter months. So glad you’re back dude.

If your draw length is 28", this bow at 52" will draw around 70 pounds. Thank you for watching!

Hi Nick...out of the several bows you have made so far, what may be the percentage of those that snapped due to normal use...no excessive draw.
