Making a 50 Pound Egyptian Style PVC Pipe Bow

Today I’ll be shaping a piece of 1 inch schedule 40 PVC pipe into a reflex-deflex bow inspired by the triangular composite bows of Egypt, Assyria, and others. The weight of this bow can be raised by decreasing the amount of deflex, with 70 pounds being about the upper limit for this style.

ive watched a lot of your videos bud, and this week im starting out. im two fails in thus far. but striving to succeed. this I believe will be the easiest one to attempt, the pipe your using is a little different for the pipe I can purchase in any hardware store here in the UK. I was very close to succeeding today, but heated the handle whilst the string was taught, "schoolboy error" but im laughing at my mistake now, "get this" I didn't have paracord, and string was little bit pointless, so I needed something heavy duty and I looked around my yard, and found, electric fence wire, There are horses here, so I cut a little bit off that, and when I pulled that back, 1. I couldn't draw to my cheek she was that tight, and 2. it sounded like a guitar outta Nashville. ( it might leave a little mark on your finger tips) but I had a budget for this project, nonetheless I am adamant im going to succeed with it. PVC pipe, so versatile. ( if you can rewind the clocks to when you first stated.) just messing about with the material is quite eye opening or jaw dropping, because it effectively can be moulded into many shapes. hope this finds you well. and thanks for the upload. been on your journey for the last 6 months, and have watched you grow. top man. be cool big dog (thumbs up)

Thank you! I have not used the hot box for a while. It works really well but I prefer the heat gun because it gives me something to do while the bow heats up and I feel more involved in the making of the bow. If I was making a lot of bows all at once, I would definitely use the box.

Hey, Nick! Big fan! When you flatten the ends, is it better to have that gap than mashing it flat? Sorry if you already covered this question.
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 4 года назад
The more gap, the more strain is put toward the handle of the bow. Thinner ends usually mean a lower draw weight and I find they help lessen handshock. A thicker end usually means more weight and more handshock. It’s more important that they be even so the limbs can balance each other out. Thank you for watching!

Hey Nick! I very recently executed this design and have only had time to put a very few arrows through it. Like my other attempts with your 1” schedule 40 designs though, there is that hand shock - I thought that this deflexed design may have countered it to a large degree, but it’s definitely there! Mate is this just an inherent part of the larger diameter pipe? Rewatching your video as I’m typing this, my folded tips maybe have a few more degrees of reflex than yours….perhaps I can adjust this and try again. Anyhow- thanks again mate and well done!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hey nick. Since your come back. I see this is your new style for the sears. I love it. I saw you used this style sears on other bows too in the most recent content of a couple of months ago. The echoes in time bow. The 130 pound Turkish bow too. I have made two bows with this style and I absolutely love it. I think it's better and much stronger than all the other sears on other bows. But I make the sears a little longer and give it some more reflex. It's awesome. I do not have a chronograph. But the bow shoots fast. I'm from South Africa and cannot find schedule 40 pipe. So I just use the cheap pvc pipe. So I reinforce my bow by using two pipes. Its actually not that heavy and draws smooth. Thanks for sharing this amazing art. Your craftmanship is amazing.
@MomoHat123
@MomoHat123 2 года назад
I’m from South Africa as well, I’m just gonna buy schedule 80 from Amazon hey. But how’s your pvc working? U put two pipes inside each other? How’s that layering technique? What’s the strongest bow you have made
@musaadfelton3909
@musaadfelton3909 2 года назад
@@MomoHat123 Hey assalaams Muhammad. I'm in Cape Town. I looked to buy schedule pvc pipe online but it's so expensive. However I sourced Pvc pipe in parrow at a place that sells SABS approved high pressure blue pipe. I cant remember the name of the place but I know where it is. So I bought there but still doesn't look as thick as the schedule pipe nick uses. However, yes I used two pipes and inserted one inside of the other. I'm not too sure what the draw weight is. But I can tell you that it is fast, because I went to a farm where they do archery and I stood next to someone else with a 50 pound Turkish composite bow and my bow shot as fast as his bow. We stood at about 40 meters away from target and our arrows reached the target at the same time. The bow is heavy on my shoulder as it is two pvc pipes However it's manageable but not as comfortable and light as s composite fibreglass bow. So it works. I can kill a bull with this pvc bow I made. So I don't know the specs of the bow because I'm new at this. I don't have equipment to measure. But the bow needs heavier arrows. Lighter arrows makes it vibrate and feel like dry fire. But I still love this bow no matter.
@musaadfelton3909
@musaadfelton3909 2 года назад
@@MomoHat123 however if you get that schedule pipe. I don't think you would need two pipes because it's better with one pipe so that the bow is lighter on your shoulder and smoother drawing. It will be more enjoyable and the lighter the bow, it will shoot faster.

@TexZenMaster
@TexZenMaster 4 года назад
At the beginning of September, I was 279.8 pounds naked on an empty stomach and it was beginning to limit my activities or the speed at which I could do them. I've gained weight before and lost it when I quit smoking, but not nearly this much. Like most, I thought: How did I let this happen? Well, in the past 50 days, I've lost over 42 pounds and I'm still losing. Here is how: So, I cut my caloric intake by a massive amount and most importantly, I quit drinking alcohol. That was 800-2400 calories a night that did nothing but damage. My meals were now limited to 300-400 calories each with a 150 calorie snack during the day somewhere. Because of this drastically decreased calorie intake, everything you eat needs to be nutritious and healthy. Whole grain foods are good, but limit bread intake to one meal. If you want a "whammy" style cleansing to start, eat nothing but fresh fruit for the first few days and plan to devote more time to the bathroom. Light exercise is a necessity, not only if you're dieting, but all the time. Below is where my workout came from: I cleared out a room of my house and made a projector room with a 13 foot wide projector screen and high lumen projector. I put only a flimsy coffee table in that room and no other furniture so my only option for seating was the floor. I work from home, so I am constantly getting up every 20 minutes, but otherwise, my time is free. Getting up from the floor 20-30 times a day by itself is a serious workout when you're nearing 300lbs. Within a week, I wanted my workout to go to the next level, so I began using the 'Smokeless Range' pistol training software and infrared camera with my projected screen. I modified several real guns to fire infrared and visible lasers for interaction with the computer software and use them to game. Standing, walking, aiming, and holding a 2lb pistol or 7lb shotgun while gaming is a brutal experience to the out-of-shape upper body after a couple of hours, not to mention the calories burned from pulling the trigger 1000 times an hour. If I dared play a zombie game, I would sweat buckets and have to take multiple breaks to rest. BTW, the best game for pistol training I found was Plants vs Zombies; Not only do you have to be quick with the gun, you have to think several moves ahead on which targets to shoot first. By sticking to that diet and doing that exact exercise, I am losing roughly a pound a day. In July, when I did business at my local bank, I had to take off my phone in order to fit into the bank chairs. Finding that out was depressing... Now I can just barely make out my 6-pack if I flex real hard. I am 6'3" and my super-skinniest weight is about 200. I just got up to weigh myself and I'm 237.6 under the same circumstances listed above. This diet may not be for everyone, but it is working for me. Take care; I hope this helps.

I started on the keto diet and intermittent fasting at 240 and continued until I was down to 165. That took a few months, then I started adding carbs back and cut out animal protein. I have not added any exercises and am not super active. I spend a lot of my day standing up, I shoot bows, I flintknapp and forge. Those are my exercises.

Could you add highway rods to it so to increase the pull weight?

Yes, this bow can handle two 5/16” rods inside. I would cut them down 8 inches shorter and centered them inside the bow before the tips are folded. Folding the tips will lock the rods inside the bow permanently.
