The good thing about making it a bit too big is that you could probably put chapstick/spare bobby pins/some other tiny object you might need in there as well
When I made my first box my grandmother told me to wrap the wood with Saran Wrap or plastic bag so it seemed to come out easier and never bake it in the oven but since you did it gives it a very old antique look being burnt like that that's kind of really cool
Awesome case! I came across your channel a couple of months ago, and have been so impressed with your passion and craft. I’ve never attempted any type of costuming, but watching your projects come to life is so much fun. I get excited whenever I see a new video of yours pop up in my feed. Keep up the great work! Happy costuming 😊😊😊
I have this idea of a future life of mine where, while not necessarily dressed in period costume--save a shift and bathrobe, cuz that's how I kind of do things now--I'd have one of these to carry not a cell phone (I do not own one and probably never will), but all those weird little things I find I need during the day--pen, paper, nail clippers, tweezers, debit card. It would be there, accessible and look way more cool than anything else I can think of.
Slightly off-topic, can you tell me the provenance of the take-down spoon on the right side of the screen at 0:25? I've never seen screw-apart anything from the middle ages! Thank you!
Man this is so cool, whats the coat of arms? Is it fabric or a veil? I wonder if i could reproduce my family's! I think i need to be realistic and start by a pair of socks rather than try leather working, i know im getting ahead of myself haha
YAY! I love your videos! You did an amazing job! Don’t forget to oil your case on the outside to make sure it is waterproof and conditions the leather. :) Thank you for the plug and I’m so happy I could help you to make your case! I’m a big fan so this is a wonderful ego boost and pure compliment. Thank you.
Ooo, thank you for the reminder about the oil, I need to get on that! You are very welcome for the plug, I am happy to share great tutorials with everyone when I find them!
"Mr. Donner's Woodpile"...a lovely children's story about an enchanted woodpile where the animals that live there have magical adventures and speak so they can tell us about them.
Make a clothing line called fashionably sick. Leather insulin cases, Lace stomi bag covers, astma pump holders that looks like gun holders and etc. GOD I'M SO INSPIRED!
I had to laugh, when you took out your phone of all things...I thought it was a small prayer book or something similarly ‚authentic‘ at first 😂 The case looks very good, like an actual antique!
The moment at the end, where the twig kept getting in the way and your reaction. I burst out laughing. There is just something about the contrast of the medieval looks and contemporary behaviour, that I think is really charming. You seem like a person that is down to earth and genuine and I really appreciate that. I happily subscribed and am looking forward to new videos of yours.
Don't put leather in or near any sort of heating elements or near a fire to force it to dry faster, it ruins the leather, makes it shrink too much and can warp. You can however, use an ordinary fan blowing room temp air on it. This gives me an idea to make a stout pouch for my cell phone. I would rather wear it from my belt, but I don't like the modern equivalent of the clip on backings. I was going to crochet one, but it would be too floppy and would not protect the phone very well. I want to put something like small carabiner clips or large lobster claw clasps on it to click it onto either my belt or belt loops to my pants without having to remove the belt on and off when I want to add on or take off the case at will.
Skyving? Is that what 'skyving' is? In the north of England - we have a term: 'skyving off' which means, sort of, not doing what you're supposed to be doing. Typically it's a way of saying, 'bunking off' or 'playing hookey'. Skyving means like time-wasting so that you don't have to do your work. So I wonder what the exact etymology of the term is. How did it get from shaving leather edges to what I have always used it to mean? Like 'swinging the lead' originally came from an actual job aboard ship.
1:43 . Eek! no the marble slabs are used for tooling. That's a bad idea for the same reason glass cutting boards are; every time the blade hits the marble it would dull so much more than when it hit wood and might even chip the corners if it hits just wrongly enough. I think you chose well in lieu of a cutting mat or other such item.
I wonder if you could mount a loop of string to your piece of wood to make it easier to remove? Possibly around the edges so you would in essence be pulling from the bottom not the top.
Skiving as in the thinning the edges of using a skiving knife. In the modern UK has come to mean being lazy. But as pointed out in the video it is a lot of work. This may have come to pass because skiving is a skill that commanded extra pay, and better working conditions creating envy in the other workers.
Now i want such bag too... (((( you used only water to make the relief image? I see you use also a number of some professional tools, you're a leathercrafter?
I think you did pretty well on this. I'm tempted to make one myself, but I might try it with layers of cloth. Leather work is absolutely foreign to me lol
Hiding my cell phone / "pixie stone" during events is always an issue for me. I want to do this so bad, but I'm absolutely horrible with leather. Where do you buy supplies? Would a mock up be a good idea here, or a waste?
1:42 noooo, dont cut directly on marble! this will ruin your blade! Marble is great, but it should only ever be used if a cutting mat is over the top of it!
Wow again, beautiful work on your leather case to hold your cell phone and I love your entire outfit. Is there anything you can't make, you seem to have the talent to make anything you want.💙💚💜
I laughed when you took out your phone from the case at the end XD I have kind off the same problem because I am into cosplay and I always try when I can to do a case, a bag, or a backpack that can suit my cosplay. The last one I did was a red accordion handbag made from paper mache and cardboard.
Question: both your walk through and Ms. Hicks' videos show the glue being used liberally on all layers - but the lid separated from the case layers when the lid was cut apart. Which layer is glued just to the bottom case portion? Is it the third layer? And do you apply the glue just to the case part, for more control? Forgive the probably dense questions, please and thank you.
Delightfully asymmetrical stitches… I’m stealing that. I’ll give proper credit, but I’m going to replace “I effing screwed up again” with the new G version.
I should make one big enough for my inhaler and spacer! Though it would have to be really big because my spacer isn't collapsible Plus I'm vegetarian Is vegan leather a proper substitution? Or should I just stick to knitting and sewing pouches for my various medical needs XD
Wonder if pitch glue would've worked? It's a native American glue but still period correct. You can make it primatively but you won't like the ingredients. I don't mind them.
Morgan! That's so cool! And it might be a good beginner project because you don't need a ton of specialized tools or forms! (I could be wrong; don't take my word on this, I'm just excitable.) I'm glad to see the cord you made in another video found a good home! Oh, I need to try this! I have leatherworking friends; maybe they would let me borrow some tools for a day if I make them dinner or something.
Okay, but like, that is so cool! It's obviously not an "easy" process, but it's defiently helping inspire me to try it out sometime.......if only I had the tools, or money.....
Artemis above you answered my questions about my next project. I had a cloth bag schematic I made and its useless for my phone, so here's my next project.... when I have the money for supplies
Tried following Barry Hicks' original video and yours, but couldn't find an answer yet, so I'm dying to know - what's needed to make this case in terms of leather? Bit of a newb with leatherworking so no idea what leather to use for the outside layer - I caught that 1-2 ounce calfskin for the inner layers but not clear on the outside.
I love your series, but can I please help with anything leather related? Been doing it about a decade now and I could definitely shed some light and make the projects easier.
Gorgeous! I love the dress, I'd love to make one like this but how would you keep it clean, it looks like a lot of work! The case turned out amazing! I'm gonna add leathercrafting to my future hobbies, thanks to you!
Folks out our way have found that many installers of granite countertops just throw away the cut-outs from sinks, and are happy to give them to someone who wants them. Usually a nicely-sized oval.
Thank you for this video - it was really helpful to get an overview of the process, because it helped me identify the skills I should develop before trying to make my own leather case.
