The first in a series showing how to solder various audio connectors and make audio cables. In this one we make a 6 wire cable for connecting a DAC with a 4.4mm balanced output like a ZenDAC or KannAlpha to a balanced amplifier that takes 2 XLR connectors - The pinouts for these connectors are
Going from tip to sleeve on the 4.4mm TRRRS jack
Tip = L+
Ring = L-
Ring = R+
Ring = R-
Sleeve Ground
And the XLRs
Pin1 Ground
Pin2 Positive
Pin3 Negative
For this cable I have used 84 x 0.071 slik covered Lits but any wire will be fine and we have wrapped it in 550 paracord

Ive done this a few times over the last few months and forgot to add parts pre soldering at least twice. Great fun! Used Pure Silver type 2 litz the last time round over a cheaper litz i'd used before and its probably not worth it price wise but its all relative. Looks great braided without a sheath matching the silver accents on 1990 pro's. I had a sheath on initially but decided to cut it off and as i got to the end of doing so managed to snip the lits cable and had to solder it all again! More great fun! Bought that solder sucker too, proper bit of kit.

Received my black hd650 cable today, would be lying if I said I could hear a difference, but what gets me is the low microphonics and the sheer lack of mass, makes wearing my 650s even easier!

Yes, ergonomics and microphonics are often overlooked on cables

He man, great video! What size soldering tip are you using? Wanted to order a .4mm but seeing you work I think that’s too small.
@CustomCans
@CustomCans Год назад
we use quite thick wire that wicks the heat away so normally use something around 0.8mm - the one in this video was too pointy and did not have enough thermal mass, I was just working at a desk we normally use for electronics work and was too lazy to change tips

How different would the wiring be using mini XLR instead of XLR?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans Месяц назад
You would have to look up the correct wiring as there is a few ways of setting up mini XLRs but they are not too hard to work with, a but fiddly as the pins are close together but we solder hundreds of them without issues

Hi, nice craftsmanship, Jason (coffee jitters and memory lapses aside). I am after one of these, but the ones sold in Aliexpress don't specify whether they are grounded or not. Could I order one from you, guys, to ship to Spain?

I'm using my lake people g103p amp with my zen dac but with an xlr to RCA cable. Is it worth upgrading to an ifi xlr to 4.4 mm cable? And will it improve the sound quality of my dt880? (Not improve but eliminate crackling sounds I get at high bass levels, when having Xbass on.) Btw: Does balanced connection even amp even work even works when the headphones are unbalanced?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 года назад
No, probably not as the headphones are not balanced. If you had a balanced headphone amp and balanced headphones then you would get better channel separation. The only time you would get an advantage with balanced cables between the ZenDAC and the g103p would probably be if they were quite far apart and you had to use a long cable - in that case the balanced signal would cut down on noise but for a short cable, RCA is probably fine

I am looking at those Litz wires just now, and seams all their wires are just single lead wires, without shielding. I know you arw making balanced cable, but AFAIK all audio cables should be shielded.
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 года назад
It is all about trade-offs. Shielding is necessary for low power signals like those coming from a turntable where the signal and any nose from RFI/EMI will be amplified a lot but it adds to the capacitance of the cable. Where as on the other end of the scale, speaker cables are hardly ever shielded because they carry a lot more power so the noise from RFI / EMI will be so small in comparison that it is not really worth worrying about and the added capacitance could cause a noticeable roll off of the very high frequencies. Braiding helps cut down the cables tendency to pick up interference and we did away with shielding on most of our cables in an effort to get the capacitance as low as we could.

Hey, thanks a lot for all your Videos, i want to mod the beyerdynamic dt 770 pro (first gen) and the dt 880 600 ohm. With this cable. I would make 2 mini xlr sockets (1 on each side)my question is, what to do with the ground cable? We have 2 connectors on each driver (+ &-) where to connect the ground to? Just leave one pin empty from the xlr socket? Does that make sense? So one 4,4mm with 6 wires (like you showed here) and on the socket just +&- without aground connection? Sorry for my probaly dump question, but I dont want to mess it up! Can you help me? Cheers and big like and sub!
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 6 месяцев назад
Yes, Just leave it disconnected, you only really need the + and - wires - you could use shielded cable and connect the ground but it would not make a lot of difference and would increase the weight and capacitance of the cable

Hye mate, looking at the scheme of hirose connectors for Dan Clark (on their website) seems like pin 1 is +, pin 2 is - (on each side).... what about grounds?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 года назад
You just need + and -, no need for a separate ground on headphones, there are only two connections to the driver. Audio is an AC signal so the + side actually constantly swaps between positive and negative and the - side will either be ground or the inverse of the + side.

I’m having a hard time finding this cable for use with active speakers. I need where the split happens to reach both left and right speakers but these seem geared toward plugging into an amp. Making my own is an option with this guide thankfully, but wild I can’t find a premade option. Trying to hook up my HS5s to my ifi zen DAC/amp.

Why are you using silver solder? Is that specific to the lits? Science says there is no measurable difference in audio quality.
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 3 года назад
Don't worry, I have my BSc so me and science go way back ;) Yes, the difference in impedance is very small and would be unlikely to give any audible difference - it is just what we use and seems to work well at the high temps we have to use with the litz wire which needs to be tinned at 450c + or 840 Fredum units to get it to solder nicely

Thank you for the video! Question, can i use a 4.4mm balanced to 3 pin mini XLR on my (standard) Beyerdynamics DT1990 pro? Is the headphone balanced then or do i need te mod the dt1990 first? I use a iFi Gryphon dac for the 4.4mm output btw. Thank you!
@CustomCans
@CustomCans Год назад
No, you would need to convert the headphones to balanced with a 4 pin mini xlr socket

Great looking cable. How do you do paracord wrapping?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 года назад
For a one off cable, you can just remove the inner strands from the paracord and then feed the wire through the, now empty, outer cover
