What are you thoughts on the new Moog Subharmonicon?

i love it but it needs a firmare update for better UI and a computer program to somehow save presets, also needs a midi out.

This posting is almost 2 years old and I just got my hand on one (funds are limited!) For me it's a great tool and they just updated the firmware. It's not like any other synth I own, very unique and quirky. Like my music King Funk Music. So much music sounds alike, at least to me. The Harmonicon can get lost in noise but....you can find some interesting things to do with it...

Man, your honest ! Thanks. You get applauded because your honesty of telling people what this is. I bought this product because I have m32 & dfam, this thing was very hyped up. I WAS excited to get it and had to search thru "pre order" sites & stores until finally tracking it down. Well, my opinion is it's somewhat of a disappointing product . Here's why, it's not the actual sound because the oscillators sound ok, you can make a chord sound or bass frequency along with the melody frequency so that's cool. But the rythym generator's stink. It's not like a main tempo sequence with subdivisions of the beat or ratcheting of the beat here & there but rather like an unstable clock rythym. I can't imagine making much use of the rythym generator's because with more than 1,possibly 2 engaged things can sound a mess quickly. Maybe, you can find some use with it but definitely not as straight forward as m32 or dfam, is it ok? (My opinion, Ehh) I don't think it should cost $700 for what it does. I guess to sum it up, it can be used for the vco's & sub vco's. The filter is no different than the m32/dfam, its the same old moog Lpf. There's no LFO, rythym generator's are straight up quirky. A guy from moog themself told me it's definitely 1 of the weirder products they've made, that's because I called them multiple times because I actually wasn't sure if my unit was damaged . The best way I can describe the rythym generator's is they can easily make your sequence sound like a random unstable clock is driving the rythym. If that's what you want, you'll probably like the product, i rather my sequences have a steady clock that can line up with other rythyms & fit in.

Thanks for the comment! I totally agree. I really wanted to love it! I think it sounds great and is a really interesting concept but DAMN! I couldn’t make anything that fits into my sort of music. If I had more time to play around with it, wait for that golden moment where it sounds amazing, then chop that out into a beat, then I might enjoy it more. But I ain’t got no tome for dat!! The rhythms weirded me out and just got really whack quickly. I’m not so fussed about things being clocked or synced, I prefer to record and chop it up anyway, but the amount of patience I need to deploy in order to get something useable was just too much. Thanks again for your feedback. Happy to hear that I’m not the only person struggling to grasp its rhythm section! 😊🤙🤙

Yeah, same experience with me. There's not a hope in hells chance you can subtly drop it into a live performance. The only way I've found to play it is to start with it on its own. Put both sequencers on rhythm 1, and turn 1 all the way to the right. Tune the first step, hit next, tune the next step. Repeat until tuned, and then bother the rhythm sequencers, and hope for the best. It annoys me that the seq 1 & 2 outputs are unquantized. It would have been useful to be able to transpose the dfam or mother with them, but sadly you can't, so those outputs are pretty much useless. Another massive annoyance is that the oscillator pitch inputs only work when the sequencers are running. Which is annoying, because it makes it quite difficult to borrow an oscillator. That's kinda annoying, because the one thing I really like is the two oscillators with the two subs. Running an osc into the instruo Anthru, and using the subs to control the wavefold and symmetry is fun. As is running an osc into the qpas, and using the subs to bother the spread and unnamed inputs. I'm not going to say it's rubbish, but I will say that it's extremely difficult to use in a musical context, and due to the annoyances in how pitch CV is handled, it makes it difficult to repurpose the modular bits in other parts of a modular system.

I have a SubH as well, and I feel exactly the same way about it!! But I have to say, that was the coolest track I’ve heard derived from this unit. You may have just inspired me to hang on to mine. (As a source for some dope samples!)
@Tarnaybeats
@Tarnaybeats 4 года назад
Thanks man! Yeah it’s definitely one of those units where you’re on the verge of letting it go then you see someone making wonderful sounds with it so you hold onto it for a little longer. I still think it’s a great unit and want to give it more time!

Can you do a breakdown on how you actually created the beat? Like how you recorded/sliced it up so that maybe other people can get inspired on different techniques of using it.

I think these series are purely for noise making which can be good but these were not made to actually produce.
@Tarnaybeats
@Tarnaybeats 4 года назад
I disagree that it’s purely for noise making. The Subharmonicon has a polyrhythmic sequencer, it’s quantised to 12 or 8 notes temperate or just scales and is solely based around subharmonics. These are the fundamentals of music and I think the Subharmonicon is extremely musical. It produces amazing harmonies and melodic rhythms. I just found it to be a bit too wild for my musical workflow. I’m sure if I spent more time with it I would have a better idea of how it could fit into my workflow but it just didn’t gel with me as much as I’d have liked.

I can relate to this video lol I use my Subharmonicon mostly for some electronic stuff but I tried to make some beats with it and... it wasn't easy. But as you said, it's unique and fun. I like it and I think it fits good with the M32 and DFAM, it's a cool combination and after few hours spent with these beasts I could make some nasty beats. Maybe you should try the Mother-32 or even the DFAM. You could make some dope beats with these little machines !

@@Tarnaybeats so i have a korg minilogue that has a built in sequencer. i make a sequence n send it via MIDI to the subharm and wala. the subh sounds amazing :) also have a drum machine which i hook to MIDI to the minilogue. I also have a moog subphatty which has VC ins but their 1/4 inch inputs so im going to get 1/4 to 1/8 adapters so i can hook subh to subhatty

@@Tarnaybeats i then hook the minilgoue up to my MAC and have MIDI out to the minilogue which then goes to the subh. so i can put a midi scale on ableton to minilogue which in turn goes to subh

I can see how the Subharmonicon would be difficult to fit into hip-hop type beats because hip hop tends to be so rigid with the 4/4 patterns. The SH's whole reason of existing is to generate polyrhythms. It's not that it can't be done, I have one and it's definitely possible to get a straightforward chord progression out of it, it just takes patience....a lot of patience.
@Tarnaybeats
@Tarnaybeats 3 года назад
Yeah I figured that. It’s still such an amazing beast. I actually want to give it another go. I’ve recently started getting into modular stuff. Nothing crazy but enough to get interested in the SH again. Thanks for the comment!
