It's not every day that you get to build a one-of-a-kind functional sculpture that will be used to help save baby seals...My friends at the non-profit SR3 Marine Wildlife Rehabilitation Center asked if I would help them bring this piece to life and it turned out awesome!
Each season, SR3 staff trains new vet techs and volunteers on how to handle a fresh batch of new seal pups--pups that are abandoned on beaches. Pups often arrive malnourished and in desperate need of help, and the staff swings into gear, taking great care to treat and raise the pups until they are large enough to be release into the wild.
This training seal represents a weeks-old pup and allows staff and volunteers to orient it into positions needed for injections and tube feeding.
The seal is made from foam and features a fiberglass and hardhat outer shell. Silicone injection points are placed in common areas to represent the thick hide and blubber of a pup, and the hide is a faux fur painted like a pup.
SR3 does incredible work to bring not just return seals to the wild, but other wildlife as well. Please consider supporting their amazing work with a donation! Learn more about SR3 here: www.sealifer3.org
