Great build . Do yourself a favour and if you own an air tool pump , get an air riveter.. best gift to myself ever . Saved so many sore wrists and scratched fingers

Oh man, I 100% know now why everyone I see out there has a Milwaukee cordless riveter. I think I’ve done well over 500 rivets in this project and got a heckva forearm workout. It’s a ton of fun though!

You are well on your way to a great fly fishing boat. Tiny boat Nation is a great resource for Ideas. I'm sure that you find the smoker to be a big improvement over your canoe for Cutthroat fishing.

Looks like it will float!! Hahaha! I can see that it will definitely catch more fish with this modification!! I look forward to part 2! I think you will have to carve your boat when you are done!! Thanks for sharing with us!! You will have to bring it to the east side we can take it out to Deer or Loon Lake and catch some mac's,. Our over to Newman Lake and catch some Muskie!

The fishability of this thing is sooo much better and I was actually just over east (well, center state) with it sweating it out on the Columbia chasing carp with my fly rod. I actually have set the goal of catching a tiger musky with my fly rod for my catch-2-carve series, so they’re totally on the short list of species to find! Thanks for watching!

@RiverbendWoodworks Newman Lake is a great Muskie Lake. I have not tried with my flyrod to catch one because I always run a steel leader to stop bite off. I'd be up for the challenge though! I will have to figure out a way to incorporate it.

I use a product called Ship n’Shore from Daly’s. It’s pretty easy to get ahold of online and a little bit goes a long ways. I use it on all kinds of projects that need a good harder base prior to finish. Basically, once a project is sanded, I apply it and re-sand lightly and you’re ready for any kind of finish.

Why are all landing nets laminated? can you not make a landing net from a solid piece of wood.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks Месяц назад
I have also wondered this very thing! It’s been on my hit list to do a video attempting a full hoop bend and will plan on giving it a shot in the future.
@Sarge43
@Sarge43 Месяц назад
@@RiverbendWoodworks I guess what I’m asking is why can’t you just cut the net frame out of one solid piece of wood. Would it be to brittle as one solid piece without bending any kind of wood? The reason I’m asking is because I want to build a net but don’t have all the tools to do laminating and bending. I was just curious if there was a reason for all of that. I have some nice oak and I want to build one, but I don’t want to waste it if its not going to be strong enough.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks Месяц назад
@@Sarge43 in that case it comes down to two factors: wood wastage and weakened grain structure. The cost of a 3/4" x X" wide oak board would be very, very expensive, and the cross grain sections would be considerably weaker than the rest of the net. Would it hold up? Most likely, but if any water was introduced to the end grain it would quickly destroy it. I'm considering ripping a 3/4" x 5/8" strip of solid oak and doing a bend with that to see if it can handle the bend radius (not thinking it will no matter how much steam is applied) but seems fun to try!

What do you use for string to tie on the net? I’ve been searching everywhere for an answer.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks Месяц назад
I use a few different things including heavy duty braided fishing line (a great choice and you'll have a ton on a spool), or heavy waxed line for leatherwork (available at craft stores in smaller 50' spools), or you can use woven decoy line for duck decoys. I also have been using a lot of Fish Pond brand net baskets lately which are awesome because they include a length of tie-in line and large threading needle.

It wakes beautifully on a slow retrieve but honestly I think it works best as a shallow crank-down. Dives to about 1’ on a medium retrieve. Lots of knocking sound from the wood, too 👌 hoping the epoxy coat holds up with how much knocking there is…

What did you use for the ‘hard coat’? Most of the big foam sculptures I’ve seen get fibreglassed and I really don’t want to start that 😅
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 месяца назад
I used Roscoe’s Foam Coat for this one, and it’s a great alternative to fiberglassing (and it doesn’t smell). The foam coat sands easy and is flame resistant, but you can’t stand on it or really abuse the carving like you can with fiberglass. I do use the Roscoe’s as a base layer as well if I am fiberglassing to avoid potentially melting the foam underneath due to the fiberglass heat reaction. I totally recommend the Roscoe’s though. Great stuff.

If you ever have to fur something again a really helpful method is covering the object in duct tape and using that to get pattern pieces. Ive used it for plushies! Also most dollar stores have these silicone finger tips that can help prevent those nasty hot glue burns

I just bought the WEN model 3417. From all my research and the price point I wanted to stay in, it looked like ALL of the "brand name" models were pretty much the same, so guessing all made in maybe 1 or 2 factories, only different names. I like Grizzly, I have their table saw, but the WEN was cheaper for me. About 25 years or more ago, I build my own out of 1/2 inch plywood. Used 2 pre-filters in front, the 3 chamber bag filter in middle, then on the exhaust side, another filter. The blower was twice the size of these today, and moved a HUGE amount of air. Spent less than $300 total for it. Today, it's cheaper to buy one made.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 месяца назад
You’re totally right that the Wen and the Grizzly are essentially the same product, just different paint. It’s pretty wild how many wood and metalworking machines for different companies are actually made in the same factory-from bandsaws to table saws and planers. Often, it comes down to paint or a slightly different stamp for the body shell. The rest is basically 1:1 and parts are even interchangeable.
