Taking on the challenge of making a hammer in one heat - under 5 minutes. Working with my forge and Beche power hammer in the blacksmith shop to quickly forge this hammer out. I've never tried making a hammer like this before, but after watching this guy in the link below do it, I thought I better give it a go! It was a great challenge and very happy on how this hammer turned out!
Check out this guy to see somebody who really knows how to do it! • Making Hand Hammer
My name is Timothy Dyck. I got hooked on blacksmithing when I was 13 years old. I quickly realized that in order to keep blacksmithing I needed money to buy costly supplies, so I started making small items and selling them at the local farmer markets. The farmer markets turned into craft shows and craft shows turned into custom projects. Right out of high school I had the opportunity to apprentice under a blacksmith, where I worked with him for four years. We did projects for some of the most prestigious houses around the rocky mountains and were apart of many large public sculptures. I learned many valuable lessons while working under his training, but the desire to set up my own shop and go out on my own was always something I dreamed about.
So in 2013 I started setting up my full time blacksmith shop out of BC, Canada making custom projects and products like railings, gates, lights, stairs, fences and all the many blacksmithing tools required to keep the blacksmithing shop running. I love what I do and this is my dream job. I enjoy showing you what's going on in the blacksmith shop through the lens of a camera and would love to have you along for the ride as I live out my dream of being a blacksmith in the 21st century.

Well, that’s normal for a blacksmith at this level of hammer making. Maybe not basic but also not super advanced.

@@thabombdiggatylike the current tooling for his axes. That sort of stuff takes months of testing and development versus a couple punches and drifts that might only take an hour or two to forge and finish.

honest to god that looks just like the hammers you can buy here in India. That's what I use to forge with. Only thing missing is the makers mark and the weight stamp.

That is pride of doing one thing well. Very common in the east. You can't let mistakes get you down, they are now part of the object. Next time you will do better. Mistakes are a chance to learn or become useful for something else. Do think, just do. You can always reheat and fix it. So Why worry?

I've seen people spit on craftsmanship from Pakistan and India, beacause most of their factories just make basic tools, except they do them so fast and efficiently, just look at any video, how little is wasted, how they manage to make a shape in an instant. Being a great craftsman isn't making the flashiest of knives, a craftsman has to be efficient and work quickly, and they are really good craftsman in that regard. They work with a more medieval approach : quick and simple but very functional for the peasants

Okay Tim new challenge. Make a axe head and handle like forge in fire. You got 5hrs total make everything with basics. You have make head out left over items. Screw ball bearings used pcs. Then after that test it to it limits like no other. And see if it hold edge and will something loosen up.

I have found that its very easy to get caught up in over thinking stuff, also if watching a video the quality of the video is directly related to the skill of the blacksmith for some reason. I have seen guys who sit on the side of the street that produce reasonable quality items with little to no tooling in a fraction of the time i can. It pays to be humble and watch others... there is always someone faster and better than you.....Never take yourself to seriously... Its a trap.

Beautiful, thoughtful work. I wonder if you could get away with punching the eye and letting the sides bulge out, then when you square it back up, just letting the resulting tapered oval be the finished shape of the eye and omit sending the drift through entirely. It wouldn't save a ton of time, you start the drifting at 5:30 and you're done with both sides in 49 seconds, and that's counting the time spent picking the drift back up off the floor.

@@TimothyDyck Ah, it sure looks a bit bigger than mine does! Also seems to have quite bit more power to it! Yes, these sure are wonderful machines, mine's from 1962. The dies on mine needs some looking over as they are a bit worn from the previous owner (I bought it maybe a year and a half ago) but other than that, it's still in great condition from what I can tell. I'm thinking of drilling a pair of holes in each of the dies so that I can attach tools to them, similar to yours. :)
