Nice hammer, I'm in process of making a similar one, but starting with round material. In thinking through the steps I find I should make appropriate tongs and an eye punch first - always handy to have the right tools before you start bashing a lump of steel. Thanks for the detailed instructional.

Great technique. I have been a few weekend courses with various people and made some things, but have never found an ideal hammer. I am not heavily built, but hammers available either seem too light, too heavy or the face is the wrong shape by being too flat, but maybe my hammer action is wrong.

good video dan, Ive been curious why most smiths fuller in between the hammer face and the cheeks part, does it serve any purpose? You never see it on commercial hammers, but almost constantly on hand forged hammers.

They do it for artistic purposes mostly. It also makes the cheeks quicker. It is one of those things that distinguishes a handmade hammer.

DAN! Its a good looking hammer, but if you are more aggressive about knocking the corners back, you can avoid it fish-mouthing when you draw the peen out. It'll save you quite a bit of time grinding and keep more mass in the peen. Trust me, I'm a blacksmith too. Cheers mate!

I’m curious why you even drift the hammer at all before shaping it. I’m assuming that the reason is because it is much easier to lay out your centre when it’s squared up, rather than when it is more organic. But otherwise, it seems like you could wail away and be far less carful shaping it out if you didn’t have to work around the hole? Is there more to the process?

Hey Dan, wee question for you. What's the story with drawing out the cheeks? is it an aesthetic part of the design or does it help with functionality etc instead of having the hammer head go out around the eye ...big that question makes sense.
