Fascinating! Thanks for sharing your technique. This was fun to watch. I ran across an old leather briefcase that belonged to my grandfather and it is missing its leather handle. Perfect timing!

Very good tutorial. I wonder if the same principle could be used to make a handle for a hard-shell guitar case? It's fairly heavy, so perhaps a carved wooden core might be a more stable option to the veg-tanned padding layer I glued up but never progressed with (because I thought it's be too flexible). I've certainly learned a few things which will encourage me to finish the project!! Many thanks.

Fantastic video and is there any reason in using 4 layers of thin leather vs 2 strips of 3mm vege tan , I guess the 4 thin layers are more flexible !
@Theleathercraftacademy
@Theleathercraftacademy 6 лет назад
I could have used thicker veg tanned but I didn't have any! That's why.

Loved the video! I wonder how expensive would be to take leathercrafting as a hobby first... I mean, what equipment would be necessary and how much would it cost...

When gluing layers of the relief filler, are you gluing flesh-side to flesh-side or grain-side to grain-side, or does it matter? I am in the process of making a stock of 6 mm relief blanks and am considering layering flesh-side to grain-side, thinking this will assist with a more natural bend.
@Theleathercraftacademy
@Theleathercraftacademy 2 года назад
Depends how many layers you are going to glue together to make the relief. At one point (3 layers) you don't have choice anymore but to glue grain to grain anyway. To ensure a good bond what you have to do is to scrap the grain (under the grain the flesh)
@pequodexpress
@pequodexpress 2 года назад
@@Theleathercraftacademy This is what I was considering. Let's assume four layers of 1.5mm/1.8mm for the top relief and three layers of 1.5mm/1.8mm for the bottom relief. For the top relief, grain on top for all layers (flesh side glued to grain side) allows for more natural bend, as the handle is stressed under load. The same would have to be for the bottom relief, but for the bottom relief, the layer with the grain side on top would have to be glued to the bottom of the handle. Or does any of this matter? Common sense seems to suggest gluing flesh side to flesh side whenever possible (better bond), but this seems to introduce opposing forces in bending, even if some grain layer is carved away in the shaping of the relief.

You will need to add rings to it before to close it and attach it with leather loops on the bag.
