Good job, this reminds me of my earlier days of fabricating, I built a fibreglass bodied open top car, I cut the outer rims off the wheels using an angle grinder and welded in a 2" band using a stick welder, one of my first trips on the road was from the UK to Spain and back.
Two things. First, milk before water makes much better tea. Secondly, walking away from a lathe with the chuck key left in it is asking for an accident, or so my metalwork teacher always told us years ago 😀
Very nice job done . It would be nice if you explain a little more of the process like when you said about calculating the length of the band thanks for your videos
Hay notice that you said could not change the wheel diameter but when we raced decades ago we used a most of the cars were 14 inch and race tires were 15 inch so the 14 inch rim was replaced with 15 inch off a late model car but both wheel lips had to be replaced with a junk yard wheel of the same make car but used 8 wheels to make just 4 thanks for keeping the art of hands on and not store bought
Is the welding rig powered by an electric motor? Would be nice to see a view of the rig. Brilliant to get good continuous welds instead of stop and start that everyone else does.
Bloody great flywheels, and with centres designed for rims half the width. May be ok for an inside rear but not an outside rear. You can buy wheels that wide off the shelf out of the US with your choice of offsets as well. Far lighter and far stronger. Though still heavy. And with the labor involved cheaper even with the freight.
I love your lathe I wish I had access to one that could accommodate rims I would be sandblasting painting and refinishing alloy wheels like there was no tomorrow
theres shops out there more now all these guys who put like 30..20 seris tires on rims...they bend....chip one shop thats all one guy does all day tig wel morn then afternoon lathe
What's the lathe mate? The basic design style looks a bit "Colchester" to me, But I'm seeing way too many little differences from any of their main models that I remember, So I'm stumped as to what it actually is and It's bugging me that I don't recognise it. :(
