Fantastic work Ralph, a sticker will certainly be in the post,,,,,, errr sometime. Would lost wax casting be better for such an awkward shape, I am most impressed at your skill with a Dremel. I would be honoured to receive such a gift. I will check out the Craftsman.

Lost wax casting is the way to go when casting figures like this, unfortunately it does require some equipment that I do not have... yet 😋

Very nice Ralph. I really appreciated the detail you went into in the video to explain/show the process of the ramming, the vents, pour holes, etc. Very informative.

There is a whole lot of science behind getting a good quality sand casting done, I went over the basics and still cut some parts out as I did not want a 90 minute video 😂 Thanks for watching Sharky! 👍👊 I was looking at some cool shark models earlier for a possible future casting but that will be for when I get my 3D printer up and running!

This is the first time Ive seen you cast stuff - it looks like soooo much fun! I cant wait to try it mysefl (although I think I am a year away at this point). I received a hand-me-down Dremmel a few months ago and it stopped working very quickly. It turned out one of the connections on the stator separated, and all I had to do was back out one winding and reconnect it. Dremels are suprisingly simple inside, although Im sure there is a lot of precision workmanship in their manufacture.

If you were going to make a bunch of these without using lost wax, it might be worth trying to make some little coreprints and core boxes to mold those undercuts in sand... But if you'll only ever make a few of these, dang, I think you're good enough with that dremel to make it work! Snail looks great. 👍
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
Thanks Tobho Mott! I was actually thinking about that, although I don't think I'll be making that many of them, unless there is going to be a large demand, I'll have to check with The Crafsman if that happens though 👍👊

This is great!! I have tried and failed 4 times now to make a bronze mail snail. I have been using the lost wax method and I think maybe my plaster hasn’t been dry enough. Maybe I’ll try your method. Well done!!
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
So I was not the only one with this idea 😋 I was actually thinking this would not work with sand casting and lost wax would be te only way, but looking back now this whole project can easily be done in a day even with all the grinding and polishing. Thanks for watching, and please film your castings and upload them, would love to see them! 👍👊

hello my friend . how are you ? what kind of sand do you use ?
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
Hi HotMetal, thanks for watching! the sand I use is a home made mixture of very fine aquarium or birdcage sand I got at a pet store and grounded up kat litter witch is bentonite, about 85% sand and 15% bentonite powder, works just as good as pertobond, maybe even better, no smell, no fire and about 10x cheaper. 😋👊👍

Honestly Ralph, that was fantastic to watch, so intricate....you are super talented! Out of curiosity....how long do you think that took you from start to finish? Anyway, well done!!! But......Will you get your sticker we all wonder!!?? 😂
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
This was actually a short project for me, making the mold was about 40 minutes while the metal was melting, the pour is only a few seconds, 15 min to let it cool and dig it out, the grinding and sanding and polishing was the most work off course, although using the grinder instead of my Dremel because it broke sped things up a bit, think that took me about 5 hours all together, I had 2 hours and 30 minutes of video, the editing took me about 2-3 hours. So I guess about 11-12 hours of actual work for the whole project.
@SollersScrappingandDiving
@SollersScrappingandDiving 3 года назад
@@ralphmourik Nice! Yes I thought it looked like a long video editing process!! My trip to the recycle centre took hours to edit because of all the blurring out and speeding up! Anyway, it's great for us to be able to watch it from strat to finish.....now just got to wait patently for you to edit your next dumpster diving one lol🙂

Was that talc on top of the sand to separate the halves?
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
Yes the bentonite clay in the sand is sticky so the talc helps release the pattern from the sand and keeps the halves separate indeed 👍
@teamSHTF
@teamSHTF 2 года назад
Very nice work! How much time did you have in that cleanup?
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 2 года назад
The whole project, start to finish, including editing was about 12 hours, I would say grinding, cleaning and polishing was about 5-6 hours 😅👍

What first got you into casting
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 3 года назад
Happened completely by accident, I was looking up something related to the video game Minecraft about melting metal and I stumbled upon a video by The King of Random: the Mini Metal Foundry, I made my own version of this DIY furnace and started melting cans.... and I was hooked!! 😋👍👊
