In this video you can see how to build a complete chessboard and chess pieces made of aluminium and brass.
Inspired by Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit" we decided to build a chessboard with chess pieces in our school.
Materials: Aluminium, Brass
Any questions or suggestions? Let me know in the comments below.

Absolutely amazing. I worked in CNC manufacturing for 31 years but only in a setter/operator capacity and slowly watched the evolution of CNC machines. Back then in 1983 compared to now it is on a whole new level. When I try to explain to people it is the same old "you're only pressing a few buttons"......yeah right! Get a good quality programmer and you your factory and product are in safe hands. Out of curiosity how much would a chess set cost. I would estimate maybe £8-10000?
@JanusXAlvarenga
@JanusXAlvarenga Год назад
I'm only starting as a CNC operator (by starting I mean 2 years) and beginning to really get into the programming side, but I absolutely agree. People severely underestimate the time and skill needed to make quality products with CNCs. Then they see stuff like this that blows their minds.

Hi Glenn, If you produce only one chess set it is very expensive. I think something about 4000-6000 Euro is realistic. The more i produce at the same time the lower the price is. But it will never be under 1500 Euro. Most people just see the material price and the finished product. They do not know anything about the work behind the scenes like planing the project, construct the parts, buying materials, making the Machines ready to work, ordering tools, programming, failing and so on.

The truly unsung heros of these multi axis CNC machines are the software engineers! As someone who has written software for a 2D CNC I made, I can only imagine the added complexity of several more axes, tool changing, angle/side changing! All this and the program having to make all the spatial coodinate calculations as well as the decisions of exactly how to remove the material, it's mind boggling!
@cattythecat9161

Good gods. Reminds me of doing mine when I was 12 in '88. Had to graph paper the shape and with tool templates work out the correct geode program. Then hand type it in on 3.5" floppy drive school cnc. The poor thing could only cope with about 30mm diameter stock..... it took me a couple of months of dinner times to run the cnc! Still have the parts! Loved it. Although the aluminium did chatter whilst being machined. Never did work out why. Spindle speed probably. Lovely job.

I'm really impressed with the board having no marks at all. Thank you once again for sharing this!

This is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to record and edit this for us! Ugh! I can only imagine what it was like to make all this. Drawing tool path for Black's squares and then watching it run for the first time must have been really monotonous! I was impressed with your machine on the second op with your (idk, half inch?) endmill cleaning up the shell cutter without blend line. Even though I do it all day, I still find it mesmerizing to see metal being turned. Did you drop RPM at partoff to avoid it flying off and getting dings? Also, how are you holding your board down? I'm not too familiar with the varieties of mill fixtures. Good job! 👍
@mygcode-cnc-cad-cam
@mygcode-cnc-cad-cam Год назад
Yes, when you cut off it's a good thing to reduce rpm at a certain diameter. For the pieces i decided to reduce rpm and feed at a diameter of 2mm. It depends on the weight of your finished turning part. The more it weights the earlier it will break if you come to the middle. Thank you!

@notpoliticallycorrect1303

Given that ivory is illegal across most of the world I would guess the legally available stuff that remains is ridiculously expensive. Perhaps adding the ivory and ebony as an insert,a ring in the groove in the base maybe,that would be nice and a lot less expensive I would imagine.My wife has a reasonably large ivory owl ornament that's quite valuable but I don't particularly like it,you could have that to cut up😁.

I really enjoy the design of the pieces. They turned out very elegant. It was clever of you to aim for a slim and traditional design and to keep the weight down. I was particularly impressed of your solution for the Knight. Next time consider making both sides of brass, and acid treat the "black" side. To chess players it will be a big no-no with the weight difference between the alu vs brass. Also make sure the King is slightly higher than the queen. However you have demonstrated your excellent cnc design skills.
@mygcode-cnc-cad-cam
@mygcode-cnc-cad-cam 2 года назад
Hi belledetector. I am verry happy that you enjoyed it. Hornestly I knew about the problem with weight differences but I wanted to know the outcome and the look brass / Alu. I love the appearance but I am with you. I like the idea to make the brass black by acid treatment. Did you ever do that?
@belledetector
@belledetector 2 года назад
@@mygcode-cnc-cad-cam Hi, No I haven´t tried myself but I believe it´s fairly simple to etch brass and bronze with Ferric Chloride to darken it. Sometimes citric acid is added to create a smoother surface. I suggest you look at tutorials here on RU-vid. Did you write the program, and design the pieces yourself? How tall is the king in this set?
@belledetector
@belledetector 2 года назад
If you will sell me a set of brass pieces (32 pieces + 2 extra queens) without the board, I will acid etch the black side myself and show you the result. What do you think? (How do I get in touch with you?)

I was particularly impressed of your ability to just dump the exact same comment . Next time consider making both slight differences, and perhaps also change the structure around a bit. To RU-vid commenters it will be a big no-no with no differences between this video and the other one. Also make sure one comment is slightly longer than the other.
