I need your help in making these videos: / thesmallworkshop
This knife was inspired by the Morakniv chisel knife: bit.ly/2tNoQGh
I was intrigued by the shape and functionality of the Mora and when I saw this old jointer blade at a flea market I decided to make one.
The handle is mahogany and was inspired in shape by the kiridashi handles. I had no success drilling holes in this steel so I only used epoxy to keep it in place, if I manage to get a carbide drill bit I'll try adding some pins later.

It sure may seem like a strange shape and all, but as a carpenter's apprentice, I can't count all the times I've had use for a chisel knife. I'm sure this knife will serve you well.

Wow this is a great example of form and function combined in a single item! I love the design and the process was well done too. One thing you might want to try when using reclaimed steel is to use spot annealing to soften areas that you want to drill into. Simply submerge the part(s) you want to keep tempered and heat the area you want to anneal.
@TheSmallWorkshop
@TheSmallWorkshop 7 лет назад
Thanks! After I finished this project I bought a torch just for that purpose. Before that I tried annealing steel using my gas stove which worked to some success, like for the drill bit darts in a previous video, but it did almost nothing to this steel, even tho I'm pretty sure it's not HSS. The stove is just not hot enough. In the future I'll use the torch for this and also to do some heat treating.

Here I am at 5 in the morning and I haven’t slept at all tonight. I’m in my last year of college and it’s finals week. And instead of sleeping or studying, I’ve been binge watching RU-vid vids all night and stumbled across your channel. I’m addicted now because watching these reminds me of when I was in elementary school (I’ll be 25 in July) and watching my poppy (grandad) in his workshop. He served in WW2 in the navy, and in his spare time learned how to do this kind of stuff. It became a hobby that he loved. A few years before he passed away in 2013 he made a couple of bookcases, a hat rack, and a cabinet for my bday and painted them blue. I still have them in my room. I hope to learn how to do this some day to be able to do what he did. And also because Ron Swanson is my favorite Parks and Rec character lol.

Really Cool! you've inspired me to try my hand at making a knife or chisel knife! I was sort of under the impression that you needed all kinds of tools and jigs to get started. All I really have is a bench grinder, hand belt sander, drill press and rotary tool, etc. Really cool to see you make this with common tools!

Very excellent work! My father and I are both tinkerers and we tend to use a lot of homemade/modified tools. As such, we had started making cutting/marking/chisels out of old files in which I suggested to him of making something very much like this with the chisel cut blade both side and end. Also mentioned to him that if we ever used a broken file we could even leave the one top side and surface(away from the cutting sides) as files just to have that as an added feature. I will share this video with him for reference. Thank you!
@TheSmallWorkshop

You know, it's really beautiful. I wish I knew better words to express my admiration. This is only type on a page & doesn't show how much it's really worth, far from it. Everything that you have done & learned up to this point, shines through how you do & what you do. Refined technical skill like this is a joy to behold. And in the end, the best I have to offer is, "thank you?" There's no way knowing if you will ever even see this either. Anyway, thank you.
