My daughter LIVES for ballet. She dances five hours a week at our local ballet company's school for dance and will be performing in the Nutcracker for the first time this year as a toy soldier.
One of her goals is to perform the role of Clara someday, but for now, she really wanted a Clara costume for Halloween.
The problem, Clara Nutcracker patterns do no exist. So I found an out-of-print nightgown pattern from the early 2000s on Etsy that had the neckline and sleeve structure I was looking for, and then make some significant alterations the rest to create a custom costume for my daughter.
The results are fabulous and she was so excited to spin around in her massively huge skirt.
In this video I take you through the process of fabric shopping, the step-by-step alterations I made based on her body measurements, and give you the math for creating a double circle skirt that fits perfect for ultimate twirling potential. You can also see how adding little details like trim, can really bring the costume up to the next level.
I know this isn't my normal content, but going forward, I'm going to be showing you all of my creative endeavors, and making one-of-a-kind garments for my kids is definitely included in that list. Enjoy!
