This is a video I made some years ago as one of a series to teach the craft of stone engraving and sand carving. This video shows the complete process in real time from start to finish.
If you have ambitions to work from home and run your own business this might be the ideal trade to learn!
I will be uploading other videos in the series as I find the time and if I find people are interested.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It was very interesting to see the design and manufacturing process. A nice little business, that someone can do from their own home.

You seem to have quite a bit of softer or middling stone than we in the US and better quality slate, I think. We have a lot of very hard stone like granite, Diorite, etc. Marble and limestone were commonly used once but they deteriorate quite a bit due to weathering and acid rain. Vermont Marble works was a huge enterprise . The complex was sold and the marble is now pulverized for some industrial use .York Stone is gray? I love that saw.

Hi Kenn, we have a wide variety of stones here, ranging from softer limestones and sandstones to granites from scotland and cornwall. I think we are lucky with our slate, we have lots of imported slate but none of them match up to the quality of Welsh slate. York stone is not really one type of stone but a range of sandstones mainly from Yorkshire and lancashire that varies in hardness and colour depending on the quarry, it has the great virtue of being relatively easy to work but at the same time hard wearing. No local marble at all, disappeared when I was an apprentice, Nice to hear from a fellow stonemason.

Now THAT is the saw I want!! ;-) WOW I haven't seen one of those old plotters like that, since my early days of owning my construction business to do blue line prints with.. I don't know why I don't do this.. I have everything here but the nice big saw and the plotter... I am gonna have to come back to it this spring since I just got started with my rocks again this last spring.. those nice signs just seem to be the next natural step.. Thanks my friend.. I will get this set up going this winter and be ready for the spring time.. I do not have a spray nozzle for my old sand blaster any more.. what would you recommend I get.. Thanks again what fun this channel is..

Hi George, that old Norton clipper saw was 30 years old when I bought it, and that was 30 years ago! (my god how time flies!). Sadly I no longer have it but I know it's still in use. When you refer to the old plotter were you referring to me or the machine? :) My nozzles were all carbide ones, they did wear a bit but not too much. I never used a gun, just the nozzle holder screwed into the hose with a home made foot pedal. Mostly today they seem to sell ceramic and I am sure they would work just as well. Keep well, cheers!

Not everyone will be up to your level yet...master craftsman...if someone is just doing it for hobbies I suggest printing with regular paper then using cheap mack tack for the mask
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490
I have also used printable self adhesive paper, thanks for the idea though!

great video - what type of vinyl are you using for the mask? How thick is it?

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I was wondering what media you would recommend for engraving granite?

Where would someone pick up the vinyl covering. I know this is how headstone are done and updated at later dates. Is that who you would call in a local area or would print shops do the same service.

Hi Dave, I am sorry but I am not sure what you are asking. I cut my own masks and I assume any stone engraver would do the same. If you are after a pre-cut vinyl mask I really don't know anyone who would supply one. Cheers!

Amazon sells mask material. You cut it to your use.
