In this collaboration with Quinn Dunki from the Blondihacks channel, I show how to make a copper water tank with brass legs, and a closely-fitted lid. Quinn will use this as part of a steam plant she is building to power her recent steam engine project. Here's the link to Quinn's video that features this tank: • Let's Build a Boiler F...

Hey, that's great news, Steve! Be sure to send me pictures as you move forward. That aluminum backer bar for the welding would have worked a LOT better if I'd taken the time to make hold-downs on both ends of the copper, and the .040-inch gap helped me to get more consistent penetration with the weld. Great work Ron. As a sheet fabricator welder of nearly 60 years, it was a delight to see somebody else use the aviation snips upside down. I thought I was the only person that done this due to the fact I am only 5 feet tall. Was recommended by Quinn, blondiehacks.
@RonCovell
@RonCovell Год назад
I'm so glad you found your way to my channel! 'Upside Down' is a relative term. I use the snips both ways - whatever is best for that particular application. I made a video on the subject you might enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x8PDRAsMDXc.html

@@RonCovell thanks for the reply. I have used them in all the scenarios in your other video. As a well aged veteran of the trade, the early days we only had tin snips or gilbows, and brute force. With the invention of the new snips I always felt the intention was to use them as per the finger moldings. This took about 10 minutes to realise how pointless they are. Also saved a lot of time on heavier gauge sheet, not having to go back and forth to the bench knife. Every time I have seen people use them on RU-vid video they always hold them in the "correct orientation " and struggle with them. Thanks again.
@RonCovell
@RonCovell Год назад
For the record, I have tried the Gilbow snips. My hands aren't large enough to work them very well, and they take a LOT of force to cut with, since they do not have a leverage multiplying linkage system.

Decided to hop on over after seeing you pop up in my feed. I follow Quinn quite a bit and I agree; she's a wonderful gift to the RU-vid machinist world. I do see you in the comments of almost all of her videos. I'm delighted to see you have the same skill of explaining machining concepts to those of us who've never touched a welding torch! Least, not since high school.

Great collaboration between two of my regular RU-vid watches. That tank is looking beautiful already, and will surely compliment the stationary engine's aesthetic.

I absolutely love watching the quality of your work. I was an aviation structural mechanic in the USN. I am a welder fabricator now so I appreciate every detail you put into this job. Thank you for making these videos as it motivates me to be a better fabricator.
