To correctly align AM radios you really need a dummy antenna. So, I decided to check what was sold and recommended by Philips back in the day and make an exact copy of this convenient accessory.

DIY Bench Tool Projects are my favorite. A tip: We are all "programmed" to put the PCB inside the box. But, if you need to work on it, you must dig it back out of the box. So, why not use the box as the top? For this project, you would just drill the switch hole in the top. Then, when you remove the top, everything is easily accessible.

Well maybe I should have explained the use of a dummy antenna first. 😅 The idea is to change the impedace of the signal generator such that it resembles an actual antenna. This way you can more accurately align the RF stage of the radio.

@@retro_tech I understand that it is for calibration, but my level of electronic understanding is 'battery make bulb turn on', and RF is black magic for the radio wizards. I still enjoy the videos though!

The "Y" circuit is quite common in Hallicrafter Radio's for alignment.

Yes, it's indeed quite a common circuit. Only the component values differ each time.
