In today's video, I'll be working through the most major issue I discovered when test fitting the new V8, the cooling system. Even though a 5.7L (350 cu/in) small block is very similar to the 4.3L V6 that came out of the truck, it of course is still a larger engine. When the transmission is lined up close to where it was originally, the engine sits further forward due to the 2 extra cylinders. Therefore, some creativity comes into play. There is more than one way to free up room, as discussed in the video, but at the end of the day, I wanted to try something myself and learn from it. The results were surprising to say the least!

I just realized I accidentally covered the part number for the Mercruiser pulley with my water mark. In case anyone is wanting it, it's 807729T. EDIT: The discount code "Saabkyle20" has been fixed and can be used once again on Oreillyauto.com. Thanks everyone!

My Silverado doesn’t have a Rad cap. You fill through the overflow, which has a pressure cap. You could probably get by with the Silverado Rad to keep from having to cut the core support. I see you used a hole saw. Just though in case someone is doing the same swap. This could be an option. For a really cool fan setup if you ever need one in the future. Check out snidertron 3000 youtube chann. He used a cookie sheet to mount electric ebay fans. It looks trick, looks like it may be stainless. He’s building an 80’s Camaro. Nice Job Kyle. Cant wait for the Crew Cab build.

I have been trying to find pictures, video, anything of putting a radiator and a/c condenser into one of these for what feels like years. Apparently people have done it with stock parts, but not one single picture showing anything anywhere. I am basically going to copy what you did for my truck whenever I can get back around to it because this is perfect. Thank you.

Doing a '99 Jimmy 4x4, myself. Also went with C4 water pump, Mercruiser pulley, etc. with factory 4.3 accessories and brackets. But what I did that people freaked out about, you did as well. I hole-sawed right through that alternator bracket (three walls), to shoot the heater hose from the WP right out the side. (Primary inlet on the pump clears, in my case.) People freaked when I suggested it. Went nuts when I did it. And still bring it up when I post pics of other things on the front of the engine.

you could have sealed up the filler neck and installed an in line filler neck that goes inline in the upper radiator hose from a Corvette. That will keep the core support strong.
@saabkyle04
@saabkyle04 4 года назад
I explained that in the video, however I didn't see any inline necks that were corvette specific. I elected not to do an inline neck because I didn't want it hanging out from the radiator too far when I already have such limited space to work with. I added extra bracing so it'll be fine. That little bit cut out isn't going to hurt anything.

For the upper radiator hose, when you get that far, use a hose for 90s impala ss and put the thermostat housing on such that it points back towards the windshield, the hose will then wind backwards behind the alternator and then come out nicely to the radiator.

Hi Saabkyle you're the OG of car reviews and your original style was what got me into car videos and made you really successful, Doug Demuro is now really successful because he stuck with 1 style of videos and made a second channel to talk about different topics, it would be great if you made a second channel so you can have 1 with only old school Saabkyle reviews and the other with your modern videos not saying what you're doing is a bad thing but your old school reviews were the most entertaining videos on RU-vid. Without Saabkyle there wouldn't be no vehicle virgins and doub demuro you're the pioneer of that style of videos
@saabkyle04
@saabkyle04 4 года назад
Thank you buddy, I really appreciate the support. I am doing the best I can with uploading content. I have a lot going on in life which has made it difficult to keep up with RU-vid as much as I would like to, but hopefully that will change this year as we finish building our house. That being said, if I created another channel, it would hurt more than it would help. This channel has always been my main platform and I have always uploaded variety to some degree. To be honest, I don't enjoy filming reviews as much as I used to. Switching to the tour format has brought back some of that enjoyment, but the project content is what really prevented me from getting totally burned out. Nowadays, I'm making content that I'm truly passionate about. If people don't want to watch or support the content, then that's their choice, but I can't base what I do on what other people on youtube do. If creating another channel works for them, then that's awesome, but that would hurt me more than help.

As I've said in posts on previous videos, when I've done this swap I've used Volkswagen fans, they use a flat style motor instead of having the motor hanging out. Also, verify that your Corvette water pump turns the correct direction to work with the serpentine belt setup vs an old v belt setup, the impeller is in the opposite direction for the serpentine belt.

Hey Kyle, I would advise that you check what kind of camshaft that 350 has, Because if it has a Flat-Tappet camshaft it is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that you break it in correctly. It is of the UTMOST importance to the life of the camshaft. If it has a roller though than you don't need to worry about it. But please do check because it would suck to wipe a lobe off the camshaft.

Kyle the people who wants you to do it their way are trolls. It’s your truck not theirs. If they want to complain they need to take it elsewhere honestly and simply don’t watch and leave a dislike. It’s that simple. Why do people make such a big deal and get triggered so badly? Trolls don’t deserve internet access. It would be cool if RU-vid makes a thing where people like you and other RU-vidrs can block people from a channel so they can’t have access to it anymore to spread the hate.

I commented on the last video talking about the 2 12×12 pushing fans infront of the condenser right behind the grill, eliminates the stock big fan setup and gives you all the clearance you need. Looks good tho! I Always look forward for when you post these videos.

In my opinion you did the wrong thing angling the radiator. How cowl hoods work is that moving air , circles at the windshield& comes back down the middle . is why the opening is in the middle at the back.so angling the "hot air from the rad is canceling out the flow & the benifits of a cowl. The hot air should be angled down a swept underneath& back with momentum
@saabkyle04
@saabkyle04 4 года назад
I understand your point of view, but from where I see it, air is moving quickly over the hood and passing over the windshield, causing air to be drawn out of the opening provided by the cowl hood. I think of it as a heat extractor vs a point of intake. Since heat rises, it should give the heat an easy exit point. Regardless, this is the design I needed to go with. Time will tell whether it works our not, but I'm confident.

I got a set of Monte Carlo SS wheels for it, nothing too wild, but period correct.

Just use a electric water pump and you will have all the room you want and wont have to hack up your core support
@saabkyle04
@saabkyle04 4 года назад
I didn't want to use an electric water pump. That was only part of the problem. The accessory drive sticks out further so I had to mod it regardless. No point in spending all that extra money on an electric pump if you have the ability to make yourself a custom setup.

All you have to do to make that distributor work is just beat the fire wall back some

Wat radiator is that?

Shame there wasn't quite enough room to put some plastic pipe on the filler neck to bring it further out. Oh well.
@saabkyle04
@saabkyle04 4 года назад
Yeah, it is what it is. Not a whole lot of options with this radiator it seems. There's another company that makes a nice tucked radiator for these trucks but I had already bought this setup so I had to make it work. I like how it turned out overall.

Saabkyle04 No worries! I know your busy with the S10. I don’t have the luxury in my parents driveway to do a project. But that Restomod you did gives me some ideas as I have a old car I want to work on. Keep the content coming!

I appreciate that! I'm dying to work on it, just took on more projects than I can handle so I can try and have as much content as possible! Hopefully you get a chance to do a project for yourself sooner rather than later. Even if it's something relatively simple!
