Making A Desk For My Fiancé

In this video I'm working on a DIY custom desk project for my fiancé Ria, which will act as both a "work" desk and a dressing table all in one. Since recently becoming a permanent homeworker, Ria needed a nice desk to work from. She had quite a specific idea about what she wanted, and how it would look - and wanted to incorporate some solid wood to make it less "officey" and give it more of a homely "furniture" feel, so I used some solid beech for the frame and drawer fronts, and made the rest from Medite SMARTPLY's moisture resistant MDF. There were a few challenges along the way!

@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 3 года назад
Most good timber merchants should be able to order it in. That said, I can't seem to get Medite locally to me in Norwich, they all stock different brands of premium MDF. I could order Medite from a national supplier (like Latham's) though but delivery costs are expensive so I understand the issue! Medite are working on improving things and putting together a list of suppliers though 👍 I'd recommend calling around a few local timber merchants to you and asking what brand they stock, or try asking Medite via the members are link in the description box

Very nice indeed. Currently I have a rather awful built-in desk in my home office. I 'm desperate to get rid of it and wanted something much lighter in design. This has really caught my eye. I hope beech isn' t too expensive but I notice that Peter Miller of "The 10 minute workshop" also waxes lyrical about Medite. It seems it really is the dog's cajunos. 🐕😁

@donjohnson24
@donjohnson24 3 года назад
Very smart looking unit, and the problem solving was effective. One query though on the use of 'our' tablesaw: I see you have the optional addition attached to the main fence. I thought that this was really only needed when cutting thinner materials, so I rarely fit it. Do you have some other reason for attaching it that I have not realised that you could pass on please?
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 3 года назад
I was sick of putting it on and taking it off all the time so I decided to move my measurement ruler on the fence to account for the dimensions with it added and just keep it on there all the time. Only problem is occasionally I want a higher fence!
