Making a doll dress form with tape

It's that time of year! When I order doll supplies a month in advance and they still manage to get stuck in shipping and throw off my schedule. Oh well... Hopefully by the time this video goes up, they'll have arrived. :)
In the meantime, in preparation for the project I have in mind, I need to have a dress form I can pin things to, since I obviously can't stick pins into a doll's resin! This tape form is quick and easy to make and will work perfectly for what I want... though I think I might pretty it up a bit with some patterned tape on top of this, what do you think? I saw some galaxy patterned duct tape and I think I'm in love.

The cardboard strip is such good advice!

That you! I have a 1/4 doll I got for Christmas, but it has a different body shape since it’s meant to look more like a child than an adult. I was having trouble trying to find a cheap way I could make a dress form, so thank you for making this video!! :)

OMG! You have inspired so many ppl to make doll clothes measurements so much easier. Making fitted tops for my dolls will be so more tranquil. Thank you so much x

Three years later and this is still so helpful to people who buy weird size BJDs (which I’m learning is like… all of them since scale isn’t often taken into account by most companies it seems!) it’s hard to find patterns for smaller bust with larger hips/legs at 40cm, so this will be so helpful in figuring out patterns! I can pin the tracing paper or pattern pieces to see if they will work before I sew and then realize it doesn’t fit! Extra discouraging when you sew by hand 😅 Thanks for these vids and I can’t wait to check out more of your helpful resources.

Very helpful video. I'm needing a dress form for my Barbie and a few other dolls of varying sizes. So happy I found your channel.😊

Thanks for making this tutorial! I just made a dress form for my 65cm doll, the inclusion of the cardboard strips was super helpful! I used duct tape, and I think that without those it definitely would have been a pain to get off of his body without accidentally scratching the resin, either with scissors or a xacto (I used scissors)

@@LomisPlayground I am making two of my doll. One for me to try making clothes with and the other is for a friend who is a doll clothes maker and says these are better to work with than just measurements alone. 😄

Definitely gonna make one of these. One of my minifees has a habit of bending her torso when I’m trying to get straight measurements lol.

Laele does the same thing! Bendy torso. So much easier to work off this. XD

Oh brilliant! I was thinking about making dress forms for my dolls only a few days back, so this is super helpful! :D Plus using the cardboard strip down the back is genius; I use this method to make clothing patterns, but I'm always worried about scratching the resin when removing them from the body, so I shall try this next time I make some :)
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
It's soooo much faster and easier to cut it off with the cardboard there, I swear!

That's way better than how I did mine, i put draping lines made of painters tape direct on my doll! 1. she wasn't brand new, 2. I didn't know better. It would still work but I would but cling film on her first if I did that again and my way doesn't let you pin anything to anything. I taped paper onto her body along the drape lines to create a pattern that way. Your way is much much better.

I will have to try this! how would you go about making sleeves?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
You can totally extend the wrapping down the arm if you want to have a dress form with shoulders/arms! I find it works best if you have the arms lifted into a T position, as it can be hard to drape fabric on them when they're down.

Wow this is neat ! Do they make different is it doll resins ? And do people really use these ? Is there a market for making doll clothes or patterns ? And what all sizes please would this fit please ? It’s clearly larger than a Barbie doll ! I seen a man have one a little bigger than one of them ! Is this for a 18 inch doll ? What sizes would you recommend please ? And is the link you sent ? Is that I good price is why you buy yours from them or are others bad about falling apart please ? Ty

You'd use this to make a fabric pattern and stuff it or create a foam core. I'll be doing something along those lines in the future :)

is it ok to use cling wrap instead of regular plastic?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
Yes, cling wrap works really well! You can use other tapes too, masking tape and such works best for me in this climate but some people do better with clear cellophane tape or duct tape :)
@M0odyBlue

So trying this method if I try to make a doll dress form again. The tissue paper would have so saved me from accidentally denting my poor doll’s arm with the scissors.

😂 NEVER!! My fabric scissors have a hallowed place on the desk. But I keep a lot of less important scissors around too that I sometimes use to cut fabric if I am being lazy. XD
