Making a dress in a HOTEL ROOM || DIY Pinafore from old sheets WITHOUT a pattern

Another endeavor in the "sewing things in places you probably shouldn't be sewing in" adventures... (it's a working title). This time I decided that making a dress in a hotel room was a GREAT plan, and I doubled down on my efforts by making a cottagecore pinafore without a pattern. Just a borrowed sewing machine and a desire to MAKE!
One thing I will mention is that when making a pinafore from upcycled materials: make sure you have triple checked that the bedsheets you are about to make a dress from, do NOT have random discolorations that will inevitably end up at the back center of your dress.
Pattern: none
Materials: bedsheets from a thrift store

About 10 years ago I sewed up a twin size quilt to in a hotel room while my sons were at ComicCon. Staff wondered why I brought a sewing machine at check in and it opened some interesting conversations about mothers and grandmothers who sewed/quilted in their past. Kind of an interesting ice breaker. That was a great weekend.

I love how swishy the skirt is! It's so full that you could fix and questionable sewing bits on the hem while wearing it! And don't be so hard on yourself. You made that thing in a hotel room, without a pattern, with limited and questionable tools, and it still came out wearable! That's an accomplishment! If you can't get the stain out, dye the whole thing a slightly darker shade of grey and it should cover everything. (This will also work to cover blood stains on your favourite pants...) In my approx. 25 years of sewing, I have found that most tension issues are the fault of the bobbin region, with the occasional top-thread-jumping-out-of-place issue. The first things I check for are lint and thread placement, and rectifying those issues fixes 98% of problems. The remaining 2% shall not be mentioned here because they are frightening.

I live in far south Texas (south of everything in the lower 48 except the Florida keys, so always hot), and I’d wear it over a tank top or thin tshirt - the loose skirt would make up for the polyester (maybe). Or as a beach coverup.

It came out so cute. Here's to improvising sewing projects. Nice filming and editing too. My guess for a seam ripper hack would be to start the opening with a straight razor. Sounds like overkill, I know, but the edge will (hopefully) limited to the one thread. I've had, um, mixed results. I see what you need by needing layers. Up here we're down to what the locals lovingly refer to as 'snot snow'. It's dark, lumpy, cold and just won't go away. Tis the season? I love the reaction people have to snow...

Shout out to all my hotel room sewing peeps! I've done this more times than I care to remember, lol. Thrift, gift. They both end in "ift"... As far as markings on the machine, those lines on your soleplate are 1/8" apart. The 5/8" line is the one with the hole in it and the 1" line is the one farthest to the right. All things considered, this is well done. You had suboptimal conditions and Did The Thing!

As someone with a 1950's sewing machine, I have given up on good looking buttonholes (unless I sew them by hand, which I rarely have energy for). On the plus side this machine is built like a tank and has faithfully put up with my sewing shenanigans, no matter how many layers there are. And thank you for reminding me to NOT listen to my brain when it wants to "just wing it".

This was a fun project! As someone who services sewing machines about 3/4 of the machines I see have problems in the bobbin area with tension, or it eats the thread, or etc. so you are not alone in that. Your jumper turned out really cute considering what you were working with.

That machine is a similar model to the one I learned on, and oh boy they are a fussy beast. They can behave so well and then suddenly: bonus chaos. I also realised after owning it for a decade that I was threading it wrong, in two ways. Which... could also explain the bonus chaos. But I am also very grateful I was able to upgrade to a digital machine and actually use all the shiny stitch options, as the previous machine I only had the straight stitch foot for some reason? But this video is certainly helping me gear up for progressing my pinafore/apron projects, truly a great design for trial and see. ^_^

When my daughter got married, it was at her fiance's church, which is about 60 miles from home, so we got a hotel, it was just easier. The bridesmaids ordered their gowns from a Chinese mail order company, and 2 of the bridesmaids did not try in their dresses until after the rehearsal dinner Friday night! I get a phone call from the bride "moooooommmmmmmm. Heeeellllllppppp!" The 2 dresses were literally coming unstitched! The front desk kindly gave me those travel sewing kits where the thread is already attached to the needle. At 11 pm the night before a 9 am wedding, I started hand stitching 1/2" wide horizontal pleats back onto the dress liner. That was fun! 🙄

I would have tried to find flannel sheets. As for buttonholes, I would recommend hand sewing them with embroidery thread or silk buttonhole twist. Machine buttonholes are a pain in the neck. Found that out when I tried using the buttonholer on my machine. I ended up sewing it by hand, but hey, I got it done and it's not going anywhere.
