For anyone wondering, trucks (at least in Australia) tend to have shorter but much wider leaf springs, and that is why it is bigger than one you’d generally expect from a car

Love seeing the process of the forging of these knives! Would be cool if you gave Jack Krauser´s knife from Resident Evil 4 a shot!

Great job. Especially for a guy using minimal power tools. I imagine if you had a belt grinder you'd really put a nice finish on your blades! Just a helpful suggestion? When you're going to drill into parts that will be small (the brass) drill the holes FIRST then cut them off with the angle grinder. This way you're not trying to hold still small parts while drilling them.

what i love about a khukri is that its a knife,axe,machete,hatchet, and a badass looking zombie killer

Feel like grinding out that piece of metal rather than just forging it in the beginning takes out so much blade strength

finally found another human who uses the angle grinder to shape the handle. i can't afford some professional belt grinder so almost everything i do is on the angle grinder.

@makeorbreak6674 7 лет назад
+Rew Knives I'm afraid I'm a traitor, I just bought a professional belt grinder but I have a feeling I'll still use my grinder for shaping, it can do things that not even a belt grinder can do

Did you run the knife thru a normalization cycle post the major forging and grinding in?? This removes the stresses, and after HT and quench it is more durable, tougher and is less prone to break.

Great work! I really like the FORGED finish instead of a highly polished one! It looks like it is made to be USED! Thanks for the build video!

Very nice work. I just wanted to pass on that the bubble like pattern on the steel after the quench is indicative of the steel being over heated, resulting in large grain growth and decarb.

For a pleb who doesn't know what steel a leaf spring is comprised of...what steel is a leaf spring comprised of? And is it sufficient for a knife to be used heavily for a good, long while?

What is it called when the tang fits the shape of the handle (so that you can see it sandwiched between two pieces of wood or whatever the handle is made from) instead of fitting in it inside a handle like swords?
@makeorbreak6674
@makeorbreak6674 7 лет назад

Why do you not go all the way though with the angle grinder cuts? It would seem easier to do that than pull them off with pliers>
@benanarama5332
@benanarama5332 7 лет назад
I'm confused I thought once you temper the steel you shouldn't use the angle grinder as it reheats and weakens
@keifman7
@keifman7 7 лет назад
Ben Arney you can still go over it but you can't beat the crap out of the steel like before heat treating. So as long as he doesn't spend too much time on one spot, he should be fine

great job but when quenching a high carbon steel such as a lief spring i have found that a water quench gets the blade much harder

That would also get the blade warped all to hell. That's why we use oil.

Since blade isnt forged on the cutting edge it's not going to hold up very good. After a handful of chops it's going to need to be sharpened again.

I'm pretty sure a way you could keep the factory temper in the steel would be to cool the peice down with water or oil after every use of the grinder (thats what i did with a wrench but idk if it works the same for a leaf spring) keep up the awesome builds man!
