Making a Fancy Leather Cuff
Leather bracelets are a great small project to make for a gift this time of year (stocking stuffers, etc!). They're also a great use of small and scrap pieces of leather :)
This leather cuff is a beautifully simple looking bracelet with a high quality solid brass buckle. You can make it in many different widths, you can make it using multiple layers with a saddle stitch or a simple non-stitched design with some brass rivets. You can also make it with or without a keeper depending on your buckle choice. In this project we'll show you how to use some more advanced leather crafting skills to make a seeming simple bracelet design a bit more fancy where it counts - in the construction and function of the piece. Enjoy!

I loved the making of this. But my favorite part of the video was simply when you stopped talking and said you needed to focus. That small, nonchalant detail reminds people the care and detail that truly goes into the craftsmanship. Sometimes you simply cannot talk through it.

You are quite a craftsman, it's amazing to watch you work. Thank you for your videos. May I ask this question, why do some belt makers sow along the top and bottom of a belt when it's full grain leather?
@NMiller_
@NMiller_ 3 года назад
I'm guessing it's purely aesthetic, but would be interested to know if not.
@Corter
@Corter 3 года назад
Thanks! If it's a single layer belt it's either done for aesthetics or to keep the belt's shape/size over time - unstitched, single layer belts will stretch no matter how thick the leather is if you wear them for years. Once you get in the 10-12oz category you're only talking an inch or two over a decade, but if you stitch the belt that thread will not stretch and the belt will stay exactly the same size (for the most part) for years . It's just extremely time consuming if you're sewing by hand.

when youre designing templates, how do you account for your stitchline? Is it as simple as adding a few mm to what the project would actually take, or is there like a generally accepted allowance?

Great video! Is there a reason you opt to use the 5mm diamond stitching chisels over the 4mm? Function, aesthetics? Perhaps you might consider a video on the various chisels and SPI selection? Keep up the great work!
@Corter
@Corter 3 года назад
I just like to use that spacing with the ritza tiger thread as it's a flat thread, and I think it looks most proportional at 5mm. When I use round, thinner threads i'll use a 4mm or even a 3mm at times :)

I have some 2-3oz coming from Weaver (BFCM sale) and I think I know one of the projects it's going to go into. Would you think some tooling would work on that project? I'm thinking a very simple floral pattern.

What can I do to reduce the inside wrinkles? Ripples, I seen yours had them too.
@steamgadget
@steamgadget 3 года назад
You would have to glue it up "in a curve". The inside would have to be shorter than the outside piece and you would have to glue it together while curving the pieces. It's tricky but it can be done. The inside of the curve is actually shorter than the outside of the curve, when they're both the same length you'll get the "bunching up" or wrinkling on the inside. Hope this makes some sense and helps.
