Since watching the Queen’s Gambit in early December I’ve been playing chess everyday. This chess board combines my love of the game with my love for dragons, clay, and losing sleep in the name of art 😉 Now I just need to work on my chess openings…umm maybe the London Method to start? 😅

He has the face of a very angry dragon, who has clawed his way from the depths, finally breaking through the rocky surface, only to bonk his head really, really hard on the inexplicably hard smooth surface hovering above him. "$@%&!" Says the dragon, his eyes watering and flames of anger spurting from his mouth. Seriously. This has inspired me. I love chess, and now I'm picturing a high fantasy board with 3D printed minis as pieces, hovering by magic over a diorama battlefield strewn with slain orcs and men. I do not know when I will make this happen, but I want to so badly.

Now that's an awesome project! Been wanting to make my own Chess board for years, but never got around to it. Always some other miniature project that gets in the way. But making a big diorama below the board might be the perfect excuse to get building on a chess board myself. Great video, thanks for sharing, love your videos!

Love it! Just a tip, if you prime polymer clay, the paint will stick better, especially with mini paints. I love this idea! I’ve had an idea to play with painted miniatures as pieces for a while. Also, dragon chess is a real thing! The same person who made d&d made a game of chess played on three boards featuring pieces like basilisks, paladins, elementals, and griffons! Keep up the great work. It’s always a joy to see you upload!

Oooo what type of primer do you use for polymer clay? I used to use my go-to rattle can spray primer but it makes the clay a bit sticky. And yes, I saw that dragon chess is a thing and now I feel obligated to try it out sometime hahaha. Also "It’s always a joy to see you upload!" is such a freaking sweet thing to say - thanks for making my morning 😊

Wow, that is insanely ambitious but very well done. My stormtrooper beanies off to you madam. I won’t lie though, when you were putting the flesh colored clay on the dragon all I could think of was a necromancer making a very large flesh golem 😋.

ok... i gotta be honest. first off, great looking piece. but i do have some suggestions. 1. i the scales didn't really look like what i would call scales. they looked great. but i think you could find a much better option. 2. i REALLY think you should go watch tons of video's on train model scenery. those guys dig for the truest at all costs. and would likely greatly uplift how you currently produce things. please note, i'm NOT saying what you do is bad in any way. but as an artist. i always strive to be better. and i can see that this advice would further your endeavors greatly. don't look at the train hobby aspect. look at what they do with scenery. they do stuff that literally can't be differentiated between the photos of real scenery and the art.

Hi 👋 thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the finished piece. Overall, I’m still very happy with it as I look at the dragon board sitting in my office ☺️ The scales probably could be better and one of these days I need to take some time to make some of my own custom sculpting tools in the shapes I need. I’m not the best at researching things before I do them - I honestly really enjoy trying something, messing up a bunch, and learning from there. When I do feel like I’ve truly hit a plateau is when it is time to watch a bunch of tutorials. Or when I have ZERO CLUE. For example: I just taught myself how to do some simple animation via lots of YT videos 😆 I haven’t watched any train videos but I watch a bunch of terrain building videos for tabletop RPGS but I’ll check out some train videos the next time I’m making some more landscape inspired things. Thanks!

I worked pretty hard to make the whole thing level. The glass board isn’t attached because that would just make it too difficult to move/pack away if need be. The stone sections that the glass board sits on are all about 2 inches wide (in terms of the surface area where it touches). No wobbling and perfect for game play 😎👍
