Making a field gate with a complete laying tree - Kempens Veken - Part 6

On this day I managed to hoist the laying tree on to its pivot post. I made a tripod of some extra beams I had laying around and used my chain hoist to lift the heavy log. The pivot is a 30 mm steel rod with domed ends, turning on each end on a 30 mm ball bearing which rest on a steel coin to prevent it digging in the wood. Now the gate is functional using just the tree, some problems present themselves. The first is the weight imbalance which I hope to solve by removing or adding weight to their respective sides. The second problem is the slating of the gate to its resting position in the forked post. The options to solve this issue have to be discussed with the client.
Thank you for watching,
Marcel

Very nice. The good news is that you don't have to reduce the diameter of the distal end and put a bridge across the natural crotch. Just leave that area at it's current thickness and whittle down the length of the log between the supports. You could also drill a hole in the root clump and fill it with lead to help add some more weight to that end. Bird shot is available all throughout Europe and is made from tungsten and/or steel BB's nowadays. Pretty weighty stuff, so you could bore a hole in a hidden spot, fill it with shot, and then cover over it with a wood plug glued in place. It might even be "fun" to find a nice large rock from the local creek that you could peg onto the top of the root mass with a large dowel much like you did for the hinge. It'd be a cute way of adding mass on the proximal end and save you a ton of work shaving the rest of the trunk down.

Thank you! I'm looking for a rock to use as extra ballast. I think it will look pretty cool.

I'm impressed and what you're showing gives me some good ideas for the gate I need to build next. Thanks for that! As for your "weight problem": with every pound you add to the root ball, this problem gets smaller. And there's a pretty big hole in the ball - I'd think about filling it with concrete. Fast and easy. BTW: These chain-hoists are great tools. I also have one of these, which I used to lift the skylights onto my roof. All the best!

Thanks Georg! Would be an easy fix indeed. For right now we're going to try and find a nice rock to use.

@@MarcelTeugels Good idea - but do both, and your problem is gone.

@@georghalder2816 Possibly! we'll see how heavy the rock is! Chain-hoists are great indeed btw!

Impressive work! Is this your own design? I've never seen anything like it.

Thanks! Not my design. This is an old style of gate from the region. Many used in field or for forest roads.
