Dude! It was truly amazing what some of us did during the lockdown and you sir...that’s some next level awesomeness indeed!! Surprised/disappointed this vid doesn’t have waaay more views! crafted quite a few hepa filter designs but childs play in comparison! It's insane how we collectively dealt with the lack/shortage of N95's/masks in general. Anyway, thanks for the video and I hope you and yours are happy and healthy!🤘🔥🤘

For the visor fog there is something that motorcycle shops sell called catcrap which you can wipe on the inside which will stop that. I use it on my visor for my motorcycle.

is the air flow nice in the face mask? how big is computer fan you use? what kind of filter that you use?

Your are very creative. I would follow Alec Boss's advice. The "problem" with Hepa filters is that some, not all, are made with fiberglass. If you cut the HEPA bags or filters, you potentially will introduce loose fiberglass into your filter system which may cause issues with you lungs down the line. We are treading new territory here and no one has done any real testing on cut fiberglass filters and possible introduction of loose fiberglass. Just erring on the safe side with this information. I'm not an expert on fiberglass filters or the affects that cutting these filters have or their integrity after they have been cut.

I'm curious about how well you could be understood if you were talking and would the seal be affected. Could you be understood? Also I think if you made the small filters on the mask about 4 times that size you would not need the fan. Final thought: If you cut a 2 liter bottle on the diagonal wouldn't you get a similar mask shape without vacuum forming?
@Kaasbaas045

Very nice! May I ask? Why did you put a filter on the end of the fan outlet? And how do I know what fans work on a battery like you used? Liked and subbed!!

I want to praise you for the creativity and the dedication but this mask is *ineffective*. First, look at 3:53, you have filters that are supposed to filters particulate of size down 0.3 micron but then leave a gap of 1-2mm , you need more silicone and more pressure , there is a reason why if you use real respirators all day it does shows on your skin. Plus as other said beard is a no no. Second, the fan is useless : it fogs up because when we breath out we emit water vapour , just creating a small positive pressure won't help as the water vapour will start accumulating as it get partially blocked by the filters that soak up and will become a bacteria breeding ground plus quite hard to breath . That's why you have one way pressure valves in respirators, between filters and mask to not contaminate the filters and get soggy from your breath and one valve between the mask inside of the mask to the outside to discharge water vapours that doesn't have filters because it's not needed : the positive pressure built inside the mask when you breathe out that doesn't let the air outside in before the valve closes again. In your final setup you get less fog because there is simply no seal around What you need : A big surface , multilayered HEPA filter in a cartridge , ( not the one used for vacuum filters , get a H14 rating or better) , remember more surface = less breathing strain, then an one way valve of the size of a 50c coin in front of the mouth , and a better contouring , meaty silicone seal . Plus if you go for a full face mask a one point elastic band is insufficient you need at least 2 . Anyway keep up the good work.

I HAVE A CANISTER DESIGN THAT I WANT TO GET TESTED. It is the exact same, but uses a two to three compartment part wet filter.The first section is contained in the same manner as the activated charcoal, and is simply a wet rag stuffed into the front of the filter. The second section is just a dry cloth or sand filter, that can be made using straws (filed with sand and contained using cotton stuffing,) or a second section inside the canister. (possibly a second soda that has been cut in half or a third. Sand is used to absorb excess water from the filter and then dry quickly. Cotton may work just as well to stop water, but is more easily contaminated. You can use a candle wick style water feeder to keep the filter wet, which can be made using a piece of rope, and pill bottle. you drill a hole in the top of the pill bottle, super glue the lid to the bottom of your canister, and then run the rope threw the hole. the filter will then be fed using osmosis, which will only fill the filter with water as it dries out. Came up with this idea for covid. If you used this you would need to replace the or wash the cloth part of the filter on a regular basis.

Fantastic design but doesn't true HEPA filter contain fiberglass particles? Wouldn't want to breathe those. Do you think the cotton layer is enough to keep fiberglass out?

Nice idea but ... it doesn't work this way. Please read a little bit more about filtration, volumes, air flow, surfaces, materials...etc. this kind of thinks. I was glad to see the beginning but the shape is not quite right and the filtration system... hm, no. The beard is a big problem anyway, in a refinery like Exxon you will be not allowed inside the plant, in case of event (gas leak) the survive mask will not fit to your face... you get the idea. Biohazard is even worse. Try, if you have the skills (and the head) anyway something like a semi-motorcycle style head cover and hip ventilator with proper filter (surface, HEPA H14 or up to E or U...etc). High filtration require some effort, some ventilators are like a drone motor or small vacuum cleaner for table...you get the point; a PC fan will not do the job, is to weak... Keep the good work !!! Keep trying !!! Respect.

Good call with the Facial hair. Thats why firefighters are told to shave EVERYDAY.
@thequantaleaper
@thequantaleaper 3 года назад
For real. The facial hair is a big bust, plus the introduction of negative pressure will exacerbate the problem by pulling even more air through the gaps. The best bet would be to close off the nose and use a mouthpiece (such as a snorkel type device) fitted with a filter. Once you get the nose out of the equation it's simple and doesn't matter if you have facial hair.

I was looking for a video to make an easy mask at home to protect myself and others from catching the Corona virus, not a way of complicating life and not accomplishing the original goal. There are real problems in the world now because of the Corona virus, and if you put your mind to it, could you please make a video on how EASILY make a mask that can be washed and that protects people from catching the Corona virus?

That’s awesome man and I would even submit the designs to some of the larger companies out there that are being outsourced to help in the PPE shortage like Otterbox etc especially your other design which is easier to make. One thing I might suggest is using Filtrete Furnace filters by 3M that have a 1900 rating or are 13 MERV or higher. These filters are designed to filter down to .03 microns and most are made of polypropylene and polyolefin which are non toxic unlike fiberglass although you’ll still deal with some fuzz. I do like the HEPA idea with the cotton to protect from the fibers because you’re getting double the protection. Either way great job man.

Isn't that tube too small? Even with a military/industrial mask that uses 40mm thread/tubes is hard to breathe under phisical activities, I can't imagine that mask being viable for normal day activities...

Aww maybe the anti-fogging mechanism is overly elaborate? A better design imo is to build a check-valve system where exhaled air is channeled to a separate exhaust port _without_ using battery power. A passive solution, in other words. Take a look at this guy's idea: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y0jYmJzEIuw.html Best one yet I've seen so far.

I cant recommend this video. Why? Because you have Facial Hair. The whole point is to crreate a seal between the mask and skin. The hair prevents a tight seal. Thats why Firefighters are MANDATED by law to shave..Everyday. Not even stubble. Because No matter how well the mask is produced, if air can get through the maask and skin, the mask is pointless. Another reeason to have a clean shaven face, like ALL Actors did during the Golden age of Hollywood. Beards, Facial hair became popular in the 60's. Need I say more?
