For years I have been fascinated by the lighthouses of the east coast of Canada. I've wanted to build one for a while now and on this week's show, I bring you the finale of the lighthouse build. I hope you like the tutorial and will try to make one of these lighthouses yourself.

Just finished my first version. Very pleased with it. Great job Kenny. Thank much. I already have requests to build 3 more for family. I made jigs as I went along to make the process repeatable more quickly. I will say that three's the limit though. haha.

Awesome finish! Nice job. Based on the experience I have with the lighthouse I built 15 years ago, you should paint the inside of the lighthouse too. Water will eventually get inside ( as it did in mine) so having the inside painted will provide another layer of weather protection and make it last longer. I had to rebuild mine last summer and replace the large lower disk because the original had rotted (it was exterior grade plywood too). Now add some stones to emulate the rocky ocean coast!
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 года назад
When I do have to replace this one, I will definitely consider painting the inside as well. I really like your stones idea to mimic the coast. I may have to do that when I put the lighthouse back out in the spring. Thanks for tuning in and for the suggestions. I appreciate it.

I like the lighthouse you made. Mine will have a working door, and I will put glass around the Beacon Light, and use Stainless Steel Stanchions and Stainless Steel cable for the safety railing. I don't think the windows and door should have great big screws in all four corners, surely you should have attached them with fine nails from a nail gun or brads nailed with a hammer.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Год назад
Your modifications sound fantastic Ian and I hope you enjoy your build. As for the screws, they were added as brass accents as well as making it so that the windows could be removed. Should they warp and need replacing or even to make re-painting easier in the coming years. Either way, to each their own and if you aren't a fan of the brass screws, then by all means, use brad nails. Either way would work just fine. Great suggestion. Thanks for tuning in

Kenny, I enjoy your multi part projects. The extra detail is great. Was this another rolled on paint job? The quality of the paint job is quite nice. BTW, I really like the additional detail around the light. Really nice outcome.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 года назад
This was a combination of roller and brush Paul. Any larger flat surface that I can use a roller, I do. In this case, it was a 3" roller. However, some parts were spray painted such as the windows and the detail around the light. It just made for an easier application and a smoother finish. There's just something about this project that makes me smile. Thanks for the kind words and for tuning in to the show this week. I truly appreciate it sir.

I was wondering how is the lighthouse holding up with the weather so far ? Would you change any design to better the elements?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 года назад
Thus far Adam, the lighthouse is doing great. It has been out for two years of spring, summer and fall. I do take them inside for the winters as the Canadian winters are just too brutal. I noticed the other day that the paint was peeling slightly on the front face (it gets most of the sun) in an area that is about 3" square. I will most likely give this a new paint job over the winter but as far as the material and how it is fairing with the weather....I wouldn't change a thing. It's doing amazingly well. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Hi Kenny, nice build. I too built a lighthouse, very similar construction to yours. Bolted it to a concrete base. Mine sweats very badly on the inside. I need to rebuild it and I think I will create vents top and bottom to create circulation, maybe even add a small fan since I have 12 volt power running to it. Any thoughts on reducing the moisture inside?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 года назад
The only thing I can think of is venting of the interior. I'm surprised that it sweat like that but instead of windows like I have installed here on the show, how about louvered windows like this. www.amazon.ca/Maurice-Franklin-Round-Plastic-Vent/dp/B01DH9B2C0/ref=sr_1_19?dchild=1&keywords=circular+vent+cover&qid=1607726919&sr=8-19 That would serves as decorative "window" but would also be venting of the interior. They would be mounted directly in holes cut in the walls of the lighthouse to vent the interior. Just a suggestion. I hope it helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show and good luck with your re-building on the lighthouse.
@joelwatts9042
@joelwatts9042 3 года назад
@@acutabove_woodworkings thanks, I will try that before i try a fan. The moisture seems to "migrate" up through the concrete because it stays very wet inside even in hot, dry weather.

Did you edge banding the plywood? Must have missed that in the video if you did
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 года назад
You didn't miss anything Brian. The plywood is not edge banded. The entire edge surface is used for the glue up and that's it. Between the silicone for assembly, the glue, the primer and the paint, all of the exposed surfaces are completely sealed and I honestly don't see the need for edge banding on an un-exposed surface. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to ask your question. It's appreciated.
