I was asked to do this after the gravity battery video and i thought it would be a bit of fun and a cool way to re-use or upcycle a broken printer.

Robert, your joy is always contagious to me. You may be like me in the fact that those bits of excitement and fascination are what did and continue to build a love for the science of things, especially energy generation. It's also nice to be reassured that saving parts from everything for future use, is perfectly acceptable lol. Thankfully my wife has seen many a good creation, or repair of something she thought was ruined, and thus fully supports my mostly organized "hoarding" of such things. You, sir, are the one living person I'd choose to meet someday. Non-living would be Nikola, of course. Thank you for all your work, it's excessively appreciated.

Low voltage Schottky diodes would have increased the efficiency a LOT. With 0.3V drop per diode versus 0.7V drop for your silicon diodes (1.4V for each pair), you'd get 0.8V more recovered voltage, or about 31% more output. Realistically, a 40-60V Schottky diode will have around 0.2V forward drop at low current like that. That makes for 0.4V drop per pair, or 1.0V improvement, which would be more like 70% more output power.

i was thinking about this the other day... for instances where you have a solar or wind generation system, and your batteries are full, there needs to be a dump circuit so they don't get damaged... instead of dumping to a load, dump to a pulley motor to raise a weight to be used later for gravity generation.

@@Kiyarose3999 i think synchronous motors are self magnetized by the source AC voltage so it would not make a good generator if that is the idea. If the rotor was converted to permanent magnets it might work but there are better solutions, and if you mean it to lift a weight a smaller voltage motor would be better. Generating 240volts from solar cells is not practical. Inverters are not all that efficient too, But this whole idea has great potential for using the extra solar power to drive a small motor to slow lift a weight if geared properly with a pully type multiplayer system.

I have seen a system whereby a large generator is connected to a pulley system at the bottom of a tall metal pole. A heavy weight is lifted to the top of the pole using a rope/chain by a person manually then the weight descends slowly via a gear train which spins the generator a high speed charging a battery. It's actually an exercise/battery charger system. There are exercise bikes that do the same thing. Excellent presentation

Quick tip here: Service manuals for printers are generally quite easy to find. Just google the model and the phrase "service manual" in quotes and you are bound to find one. Not only will they make disassembly a bit easier, but they often contain a detailed list of specifications of the modules in the printer (like the various power supply modules) as well as a detailed BOM on component level, making it easy to find specs on the components.

With the appropriate gearing even a small motor can be used to lift just about any weight. If the right circuitry is used the motor could switch from lifting when power is supplied to generating when a load is applied. A 1952 Buick could be used as a weight and store considerable energy.

The best motor I’ve seen for gravity, wind up etc gene’s is the small Synchronous motor that turns the glass plate inside Microwave cookers. As soon as the spindle starts to turn you immediately get 240V. This motor comes in 3 Wattages from 1-4W’s. They are great cos they are so small and don’t need any adaptations, I’ve been collecting chiucked out Microwaves for these motors( and the relatively large amount of copper wire they contain. Now I’m making a hand held Charger out of one of them, using an old face cream tub to put it in. I have 3 of these motors already, and two more Microwave cooker waiting to be taken apart!.

When I was a child I irked my parents by taking apart electronics (working and otherwise) with great zeal. I was deeply curious about what it made it do things it did. Many years later I took a course in computer repair and upgrade and having had the pleasure of turning out top notch machines ever since. So if you are a parent and you have a similar child who's driving you up the wall with similar activities of disassembly - get them an electronics course for their age even if - *especially if* - you aren't savvy with electronics yourself. Because if you learn it with them (or whatever they are interested in and passionate about), as neither of my parents did, your child will appreciate you for it for as long as they live rather than thinking you self absorbed and out of touch since Day 1.

132 mW, not bad for a test (2.5v across 47 ohm resistor). You can work out the efficiency from the mass of the weight, starting height and time taken to fall now (mgh) / t = J/S = watts (mechanical). electrical watts / mechanical watts = efficiency.

Then it would run forever and a day. You could measure out the string so that when it hits the bottom switch that the string is just reaching its full length from the spool. I love your Gravity battery videos. and Gravity generators etc. The issues I see is that you have to get that weight back up on the drum to start the process over again.. fighting gravity as you do it, What if the weight floated back up to the drum? maybe Dry Ice ( carbon dioxide) as your weight letting it slide down a tube in a closed system. after the gravity battery does its job and turns back into gas, the rope comes to surface with little to no energy. the expanded vaporized carbon dioxide floats up the tube and is captured, compressed and made back into more dry ice weights for more gravity battery action... now the question is,, how much energy does it take to make dry ice? does the math work out???? I dunno.. I am not smart enough to come up with those numbers..
