I've been blacksmithing for about two years now, and I originally got into it to start making my own woodworking tools. Well, after learning most of the basic blacksmithing techniques, that time finally came. And why not go all out for the first try and tackle a quite challenging style, the historic socket axe. This is one of my favorite styles of axes and I had a lovely vintage example to use as a guide. You can see the proces of making this axe on instagram (@marcelteugels).
In this video I talk you through my proces of making a handle for this style of axe. The socket and handle tapering shape wedges together just like you see in socket chisels or on machining tools with morse tapers for example. Not pin of wegde is needed for a secure connection. But the head stays removable if needed and can always be retightened.
In the next video I will finish sharpening the axe ans put it to the test on a log and do some hewing. Subscribe if you'd like to see that and stay up to date.
Thank you for watching,
Marcel

I love ash for making handles. The straight grain makes it so easy.
