Reusable epoxy resin molds seem to be all the rage lately. It's a great idea for someone who does a lot of epoxy work, but it comes at a cost. Most of these molds are hundreds of dollars. So I thought I'd make one for myself while I was making a resin charcuterie board for my wife.

I had my own epoxy fail a couple months ago... I really thought I knew what I was doing, but I don't do this stuff every day. Same problem: bubbles in old wood, unsealed. Should have known better. Oh, well.

What I think happened was the heat from the resin softened the PVC and bonded with it. I use melamine for my molds and past wax to coat the surface. This process has never let me down. Even with a thick heavy pour, the mold pops right out from the work piece with hardly any effort at all.
@AndyBirdBuilds

Thats definitely a possibility

Hey sir, I have a question. Do you tape the melamine then wax it, or just past wax the melamine as it is?

I'm sure someone has mentioned this to you by now. But for those who are just getting into this. A Mold Release spray probably would have saved your epoxy from sticking to your mold.

You didn't use mold release or line the mold with tape. Dude, you have some major tools there. 👏
@AndyBirdBuilds
@AndyBirdBuilds 2 года назад
Mold release would help, but you actually don't have to use anything when you use HDPE plastic.

I do quite a bit with epoxy and in the grand scheme of it all those are pretty minor problems ,(although the mold release issue was probably a headache). Wait till you have a leak in your mold, that is really bad. Awesome job tho, it looks great!

Instead of hot glue to bond the sides, use plumbers glue. The material is PVC just like PVC drain pipe. I used this material to replace plywood storage bins on a boat and glued them together. Nail brads and or clamps until the glue set. (P.S. It sets fast!)

What if you used house wrap tape on your mold surfaces before hot glue/silicone step?

Regardless of whether or not you use silicone or another material epoxy won’t bond to you still need to use mold release.
@StevenDavisPhoto
@StevenDavisPhoto 3 года назад
Next time, no hot glue is needed. 100% silicone and is all u need. just use a lot of it and make sure u have no leaks. You also don't need feet. Just use the clamps themselves as feet. I hate assembling molds, so I bought some no-seal ones from jeff mack supply. so much easier. I make a lot of resin stuff. Get one ;) Also for epoxy, use superclear liquid glass. U can pour up to 2.5" and it cures in 72 hours. Also cheaper than total boat. Also, if u want the color to blend less, let them cure for several hours first in their tub THEN pour. And yeah, seal your edges with tabletop epoxy and then scuff up. Use HDPE next time too. Or melamine works too, but u need to use mold release spray on the melamine.

Excellent, most informative video I've seen yet and I've been researching this for months. Beautiful work too! Was that CA glue with accelerator you used to fix the divots? What was that liquid that you polished it with? What grain sandpaper did you go up to?
@AndyBirdBuilds

Great! Glad you found it helpful. Yes I used CA glue for the divots. I used Walrus Oil as my finish and 120grit

How does that mineral oil look after a couple of washings?

It fades over time but it's something that can easily be reapplied. I'm not aware of a food-safe finish that this isn't true for

The PVC would probably worked IF you had used mold release. That's what they do in the boatbuilding.
