He may only have 60 or 70 rides on him but "how" you rode him for those rides has already put a lot of quality in him. He is looking really good. I have seen horses with 90 rides on them that didn't look that good. Especially that loped circle toward the end of the video where you had him on super light contact (it looked like), yet he was still in frame/collection. It looked like you might have been able to go full loose rein and he would still have held himself in frame at the lope. He side passed to that gate very nicely as well. Especially since he is only 3 years old.

I totally agree with your statement that you don’t create a good horse out of nothing. Each horse already has a goodness in him. A good horseman knows how to pull that out of him. Lots of patience and training.

First time seeing one of your videos. Beautiful camera work! Got a really unique perspective on everything you did while riding; most videos shoot from top-down on the arena, sometimes it's hard to catch all the small cues, especially during cantering. Camera man had to be dizzy!! Applaud to you both, best of luck with that go-getter colt!

He's a really pretty colt! I have an American Curly x Waler x TBred mare, she cost me $800 and has been a lot of work, but she's coming real good now! She always has had a "go button" (Thoroughbred Genetics) and used to be really spooky to boot, with a lot of desensitization and riding, she's not as spooky as she was and after walking her two miles every single workday for a whole month, she's fine to walk now. She still loves to trot, still has that "go button" but now I'm not fighting her when all I want to do is walk! We've been doing walking and trotting for about 5 or 6 weeks now (weather interfered with some scheduled training days) and so in a few days, I'm going to walk her a mile, trot two miles, then ask for a canter and just see what she does... Yep, I know what she'll do. She's been telling me she wants to go but has been respectful enough to stay in a trot anyway. That's what I'm looking for and I can just sense it, she's so ready, and so am I!

This Young Horse has a lot of potential and the old saying goes registered papers and bloodlines are wonderful but you don't ride papers . But a good horse with some decent ability can be developed and built up with some miles if it has a proper attitude and willingness to work and listen.

My thoughts are: he needs a little more engagement when striking-off at the lope. When this happens for you, it should be accompanied with softness that will change his entire perspective on forward movement. `Really nice job getting him to ths point in his training..

Happy to help! A few follow-up questions: 1. How old is your horse? 2. Mare or Gelding? 3. What kind of rig setup are you using? (Ie. What kind of bit, reins, saddle pad, cinch, saddle)? And do you know what kind of setup the previous owner was running? 4. What is his diet like right now? Alfalfa or grass? Are you graining him? Might be easier If you want to send pictures/video send to: Stonefieldranchproductions@gmail.com

@Stonefieldranch 4 месяца назад
I respect the opinion, but disagree. Groundwork is important but only takes you so far. This horse is a perfect gentleman at a walk and trot but panicking every time I pushed him into a lope and went into a runaway. He’s in a twisted wire because he tried running himself through a barbed wire fence when he had a regular O-Ring Snaffle. Temporary discomfort is always a better alternative than permanent injury. Every morning I run a mile in a 20 pound vest and soak in 36 degree water for 5-7 minutes. It’s uncomfortable, but I’m better for it. Reaching our potential lies on the other side of discomfort. Undisciplined horses and people never reach their potential.

I wonder 7:13 7:13 at 70 rides can you drag calves to the fire on the horse. Does it neck rein yet for you don't have to ride it with 2 hands and actually get something done on the horse. Hancocks may have had a time and place but today there's not near enough cowboys or miles for them. 4500 for that horse was a steal for whoever sold that.horse.to you lol. No offense of course lol
@Stonefieldranch
@Stonefieldranch 3 месяца назад
Every horse has their place, Brother. Just like people, everyone can make a contribution and we increase their likelihood of success with education. Takes some of them longer than others and sometimes the ones that take a little longer become the best ones. Pushing a horse to neck rein and rope as fast as possible isn’t my first goal. I want him correct. That’s why I ride colts in snaffle bits for the first two years. He’ll learn to neck rein when he’s ready. I’m focused on picking up shoulders, collection, directing the feet, and building their confidence. Others may have different goals. Also, it’s winter. We don’t brand calves in the winter. He’ll sort some this winter and brand this spring.
