RIP half your shop bud, damn! Glad you’re safe after your press decided to opt out emphatically! I saw another comment about how Damascus looks like oil on water, and the way your pattern turned out it really does! But like, if that oily puddle had some wind making ripples. Super cool, and a beautiful knife!
I noticed it on a knife Will Stelter made recently. It was like 200ish layers i think and he peened it and that added that look to it and i thought it would be cool to try but i did it by forging it thin instead of peening it.
Love the way that knife came out. You truly are a Craftsman bro. I did tell my buddies about your content and they loved it as well. I told them they couldn’t hurt my boy’s feelings so they needed to like and subscribe and they all said no problem. You have talent bro and you deserve the recognition!
Thank you. Im surprised I havent gotten any negative comments over saying that 🤣I always getting a random person where my sarcasm goes over their head and they get mad at me for whatever weird idea came up in their little heads. I appreciate you brother.
Thanks for watching. This video was supposed to be for last weekend but i get a burst of sciatica, and that put me out of commission like 4 days where i couldnt work. Knock on wood i dont get another one of those anytime soon because that sucked.
Damn bud, what happened to the motor? I’ve blown a start capacitor a couple times on my motor, which was found to be faulty from the company… but I’ve never had one catch fire. Love the channel!
It was losing power and i went to check it while the billet was heating up and i turned it on and it just started flaming a little inside. Unfortunatly i wasnt recording and i prioritized not catching my house on fire over setting up the camera 🤣
Beautiful knife, I really like the green burl handle. The high layer count created such a fine pattern. It looks very good. Almost like when canister Damascus is made with powdered steel, and it has this almost freckles/static all over, but you can tell its whole layers swirling all over. One thing that might be cool, is making a billet where you alternate high layer count and lower layers maybe with a twist or something so the pattern alternates heavily high layers and low layers with the twisted lines. Might look very interesting, or maybe not. Could be worth a try just for content and views.
My 10” wheel is a good middle of the road wheel for hollow grinds of all the sizes I make…a larger wheel would be cool but I don’t have any experience with it.
Good looking knife, especially for having done it all the hard way. Speaking of fingers and blades, I ran a meat slicer blade halfway through my index finger, just above the top knuckle. Cut the nerve so fast I never felt it but that sound is one I'll never forget!
Thanks. My arm hated me though. I forge a decent bit but forging those areas thin where i could easily press it is what really gets me missing the press.
Good job saving it with the fullers! Yeah bigger wheel will give you more options. Great tip with the Johnson’s but very hard to find now, use it sparingly. Keep it up, eventually you’ll be able to repair or replace equipment
Yea im babying this Johnson's right now. Hopefully someone some day picks it back up into manufacturing. I ran into this can very slighlty used in a thrift store for $2. It was a great find.
I've been watching your videos for months, since then I fell inlove with your craft specially when doing a damascus chef knife, I'm dreaming of having one someday. Just my funds was the only problem😭
I couldn't justify spending the money on a damascus knife myself. I only own some because i can make them. Same with most of the renovations and stuff i build for my home is because my family and i are handy.
That process of adding epoxy to the handle for a precision fit is called Bedding or glass bedding depending on material or smith. Old gun smithing technique they would tape the barrel and hog out material from the stock to make the barrel free float for better accuracy. But keep up the good work I enjoy your videos.
That came out really nice! My question is, when you bed the tang in the handle, with the wax on the tang, how long do you let the epoxy set before pulling the tang out of the handle? And what is dry/set time of the epoxy you are using? I want to try this but worry about letting it sit too long, or not long enough.
Im using 5 minute epoxy and i wait until it is solid enough to hold its firm but not fully cured. If you wait until it is fully cured it will be more difficult to remove but if you coat it properly with the wax it should come off with a few taps like i did. Hope that helps. All dry times are different so i cant give an exact time.
Bro u r definitely coming into your own with your work keep up the killer work can't wait to see what you can up with next I would love to see you do a Damascus bearded axe or Viking weapon
Wheels can be fairly expensive once they get over about 12", easiest solution is to make yourself a radius platen for the grinder out of some mild steel and just mount that into the machine. Typically you want to run them slower as there's a bit more friction between the belt and the steel, but you can get into 24, 36 or even a 72" radius (string, pen and make a compass on your workshop floor over some paper or MDF it doesn't have to be super accurate) Reason being is that on a thin knife like a chef's it won't want a super-deep fuller into it anyway so you don't want to blow through the middle and get any speed holes in it. The smarter knife maker will also make themselves a wooden chock of the same radius for hand sanding it later on... then not lose them like I did because somehow they also grow legs and walk
Thank you for the advice. The company that makes my belt grinder carries a radius platen so ill see if its better to buy that one or make my own for the sake of time. I definitely have that issue of things growing legs especially when i need it. 5 minutes later when im done and dont need it anymore it shows up in front of me 🤣
Need to try and get the S grind wider. That fuller should be at least 2/3 of the flat of the knife. Love the shape tho. Kinda like a Will Stelter style! Also Bedding the Tang is what it’s called ;)
18:20 used to watch without subscribing , now subscribe sorry for that. Kindly make a video on use of borax while making dmasacus . Greeting from India !
Maybe you could make bigger fuller if you grind it in super high angle on smaller wheel? Of course on belt grinder its a bit hard but... using angle grinder? Not best/professional way but, what matter is end results :D
Ive never tried but if it wasnt already hardened a grinder would be easier for me. I also dont care about "professional". I care about results. Many great makers around the world in 3rd world countries get the same or better results with more primitive tools.
i will admit that every single knife i have made has some kind of flaw somewhere , to me it shows that it is actually hand forged and made. as for wheel size. 3 to 4 times the width of the knife, so a 3 inch wide knife i would use a 8 inch or 10 inch wheel
Depends on what it is. I dont take custom orders right now since i can bearly keep up with youtube but if its a good idea for a video i might be tempted to make it.
Awesome knife, i have some questions tho sir. How long have you been forging knives for? What kind of anvil and weight are you using? I keep scrolling through your videos to see if you have a video on it but i dont make it very far before i see a video i wanna watch 😂 keep up the amazing work sir
I started late 2020 but didnt really start regularly forging until i started my channel in april of 2021. The anvil is a 65lb acciaio anvil i got online. Works great. In hind sight i would get a heavier one. My brother has the same one but its over 100lbs and works better. Its an affordable but reliable anvil. I definitely recommend it on a budget.
@@JPsBladeworks awesome ya I have a Lil harbor freight anvil I think it's like 30lbs gonna work on getting the 130lbs anvil from them as well I'm pretty new to bladesmithing I've made a couple knives. I will say you are very inspirational. Thank you for your videos and responses hope you have a great day
I watched the whole video giving you the benefit of the doubt with that butter knife since the moment you chop something you’ll ended up with the handle in your hand due to that tiny tang and then the handle work etc unlike and unfollow , stick to your machines
