this video will show you the process of making a knife . I'll show you how I make the template and cut out the steel , how I shape it make the handle and grind the knife .
As David Lo Pan once said to Jack Colton, "Nice Knife." I also appreciate how the forge noises are captioned automatically as 'Thank You.' Oh, also, can you comment on your choice of grinding the bevels after hardening - I've seen it done both ways.
I love that movie lol . thanks !! That was the first knife I had ground the bevels after hardening and I'm not sure if it really makes a lot of difference. takes a little longer to grind
Wow - a beautiful knife! I really enjoyed watching the entire process. Thank you for allowing us to get a glimpse into knife making. You have an amazing talent!
That is a really beautiful and top quality knife you have made there. Watching you make it has taken me back to the days of my youth when my father and I made various specialised work tools and jigs together. He passed away nearly 35 years ago now, but I still use those tools on a frequent basis with my son. You too have made something practical and useful that can be passed on and cherished. Many thanks. David in the UK.
Thanks !! it sure is nice when when you come across something that brings you back to a fond memory . I actually sold this one but I'm sure there will be some passed on and passed out
Wow, really nicely done. I can fully appreciate the time it takes for all these steps. The satisfaction in making something a useful end product is a great feeling.
Thanks!! yeah I sure do enjoy my shop time . cold weather is right it's snowing again lol . I'm just starting to sell them sounds like this one is spoken for but I plan to post a few others for sale soon . that will be on instagram ryan_whipple1
What an awesome skill! I really appreciate seeing the process.. And yeah, that wood is unreal! Looks like a trail map. Best of luck with a great hobby. 🙂 🔪
This was a great build and love the wood handles and scales always! Thanks a bunch for sharing your vid! Watching from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver island! Cheers, Jerbs 👍🏼🔪🇨🇦👍🏼
Nice! I dabble in knife making myself. Never been interested in selling my knives - I give them away to friends and family. I do recommend saving the sharpening for last. Belt sanders have a habit of grabbing things when it’s least expected. Probably why I still have fingers where they’re supposed to be. Best of luck.
Thanks ! I’ve already sold this one .I have a few that I made a while back and a couple more that have been sitting around half finished for quite a while that I plan to sell soon . Then I might make a few more of this model
Ruan, you really are a "Jack of all trades"! A builder, and a smart one at that. (I like how you cut parts ahead of time to assemble a wall. I've never built a building before, but plan to soon. An extension onto my wood shop and will incorporate your methods). These knives are beautiful works of art!
Nice bladework, sir! Looking forward to seeing more of your lineup :) Enjoy the process, Ryan. It's not work when you love what you do. God Bless you and yours ... Kihelakayo
Thank you !! I do enjoy the process and I think as long as it doesn’t be come a production line mentality it will stay enjoyable. Thanks you and yours as well
Thanks !! that should look nice I don't think I've seen spalted birch before . I'm a bit new to wood stabilizing it sure is cool seeing how it comes out !
@@leannemori9688 thanks!! Yes all finished and I’m pretty happy with it kinda hard to tell if it’s the ONE 😄 until I use it for a while but so far I think it’s a good model
@@blackspruce1861 would loved more knives to the collection. unfortunately I have enough bushcraft survival knives already starting with Schrade then Beckers then Ebay customized knives. I'm also through with Katanas and Chinese straight swords. ATM I'm currently on the elven / exotic /orient curved / scimitar sword. phased. Have 3 so far but would like to add 1 scimitar type sword and 1 more dagger about 1' - 2' long. these however I want customized from arts I've seen online. (many layered, heat treated and tempered high carbon 65 ish rockwell and can bend without snapping (sword)) Other than that I need a few more THERMAL binocs and scopes.
Thank you !! thats awesome . I had no clue what I wanted to do at that age so that' awesome you have a plan . you should check out Walter sorels RU-vid channel . he has tons of tutorials on knife making and quite a few that you could do with minimal tools
awesome knife, awesome video. Do you make sheaths for your knives or somehow carry them with the blade exposed? Or do you find some third party sheaths that generally fit your knives?
Thanks !! thats kinda what started me on knife making he had wanted to do a family knife shop quite a while back and I was very interested so I got into making them too , then we were reminded doing business with family and friends can cause a lot of problems so we didn't and it was definitely for the best I didn't have time for it back then and it may have went very bad. But I do want to sell some knives for sure !
Definitely like to see more of that on this channel along with everything else you ! I’ll go find you on IG. That size knife is perfect and it looks amazing with that spalted Maple handle ! I’d like to have one. How much ? Take care Ryan
It's definitely nothing special . I took a piece of square stock aluminum and cut it on 2 corners so I had 2 pieces of aluminum angle I clamp my steel between the 2 and it keeps it square . I adjust the grinder to the angle I want
Man this was so cool to watch! What a talent you have... Do you sale any of these knives or is it just a hobby you enjoy ? Also, how did you start doing this and what process would someone interested in doing this go about it ?
awesome I'm glad you enjoyed it !!! I have sold a few now but its been a while since I've made any . I dod enjoy it but I can tell if I made it a job I wouldn't enjoy it for long . I watched some videos built a belt grinder and jumped in . I later upgraded to a new grinder . watch Walter Sorels videos on RU-vid he has tons of info.
Many regards from Germany! This knife is really awesome. I enjoyed watching this RU-vid clip. What kind of steel you're using here? Stay healthy and safe. CU 🙂
I actually just use a couple pieces of aluminum angle and clamp it between them to keep the blade square then adjust the angle on the belt grider to the angle I want . I would like to get a better one eventually .
he did . he wanted to start a family knife shop for a bit and I really liked the idea and started making them too . then we were reminded by Brooke that sometimes working with family is a bad idea so we didn't . probably for the best I wasn't ready to go all in
I go from 60 grit to around 600 on the blade and the handle from 60 to 1000 then I've started polishing the handle with a soft buffing wheel for the last few knives I've made
I’ve bought some metal from jantz and some from tool steel supply of California I believe it’s called . It’s O1 tool steel . It seems like the stuff from jantz may be a little more rust resistant but is more expensive. But either one will rust if you don’t take care of it
yeah you could email me rdwhipple@yahoo.com I haven't been making any lately though . I'm building a camper it's almost finished so I'll probably start making some again soon
