Let's make a complicated leather knife sheath (with storage for sharpening stones or matches). This time for a Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist bowie knife. Watch me play around with tooling, heat-forming Kydex, using a laser engraver/cutter, veg-tan and oil-stoned leather, woodworking (OK, that's a stretch, but still...).
My laser is the excellent xTool P2 55W CO2
Below is a link for saving a few bucks purchasing a P2 direct from xTool. I was given this code to pass on to my viewers when I first received the the laser. This also helps support the channel by earning a (very) small commission:
www.xtool.com/...
The stamps used on this this sheath:
Zhong Jiang E803
Barry King steep angle beveler
Craftool Z781

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

The thing that struck me about this video, the main reason I watched it, was that I couldn’t imagine why someone would use both leather and kydex to make a knife sheath. I thought perhaps you’d use the kydex as a backing to stiffen the sheath and protect the back from wear. Using it to make the mouth to protect the leather from the knife is frankly genius. Traditionally in many places bone or horn are used but shaping those materials can be tricky. Thanks for the idea.

I learn more from every sheath video you make, Thank you very much, beautiful work. I cringed when I saw you using your skiving knife to pry the Kydex up over the rivet. A couple of weeks ago I opened up my thumb with my skiving knife, glad you didn't do the same.

Thanks! The Kydex insert forms a slope that the blade rides down on (and keeps the sheath's mouth open). I didn't think about it until it was too late that I could have seated the insert a little deeper to make it sit flush. Will have to remember that for next time.

I learned a few things I haven't thought of before, thank you very much. One thing though: I do not know what your fume exhaust situation with the laser is. Burning away kydex is close to being dangerous. Kydex being a PVC, it releases chlorine gas when burned. Not only is that all kinds of hazardous to you, it's also corrosive and may damage bith your laser as well as the exhaust pipes.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
Thanks! Yes, I'm aware of the hazards of burning Kydex (and other synthetics). I don't work with Kydex often at all. The last time I did I used tin snips. However, this was a complex little piece that I needed cut and scored precisely. My laser has air assist and a good ventilation system that I have piped to the outside. I'm also working in my garage with the garage door open and fans running. It's still a risk/benefit decision; I decided the relatively short period of time I ran the machine cutting and scoring this piece was worth it.

I’ve made a few sheaths over time. Q: What’s the difference between a guy who makes things and a master craftsman? A: An infinite number of little things. I did chuckle when you used a drill press for lacing holes, because I’ve done that. I also had this fantasy of an apprentice in your shop asking “Why did you tool the back of the sheath?” “Because that’s what’s going to make it better than yours.” I do think you’re at a level of craftsmanship that having a “maker’s stamp” made to brand your work wouldn’t be out of line.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
Thank You! I do have a makers mark stamp. But it's too large for this piece. I need to design and 3D print an abbreviated version of it. I've just never got around to it.

What drill press did you use to make the holes foe sewing, this would make my projects so much faster. Im guessing a special drill bit for it as well?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
Are you referring to the drill press at the 19 minute mark, or the little hand press at around 22 minutes? My big drill press is an older Ridged floor model. But you don't need anything that large: A cheap bench top model would more than suffice. And just regular drill bits work. The small push drill I used later is just for cleaning up the holes. I'm going though many glued layers and it helps to open the holes back up.

I have the same problem. I think the tape doesnt work on this type of stamping cause its literally the whole piece of leather so the extra has to go somewhere. I just cut my backpiece a little bigger and trim to fit
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
Exactly. In this case, I needed these two pieces of leather to stay exactly the same shape and size. Any inconsistencies in their dimensions would have screwed the whole thing up. Hence the wooden frames to keep it all contained. I had done this previously by printing the shape out on my 3D printer. But the laser makes it SO much faster and more convenient.
