Im a newb so been watching a few lessons on this ... I made one of these (similar) with my girl and reading the weight coment on here was hilarious, also I worried that too so my key has the leather strap to easily attach and remove so I didnt need kill the car for my bank card , and just saying I did have a heavy set of keys that hitting the right bump turned the car off while driving, twice I took it to the mechanic and no damage on ignition, eventually realized it was the weight and angle.. so your right that weight wont hurt ignition Some people wax tape to punch forks thru ,you remove your stencil then punch... pros/cons ? And when done sewing I've been shown to hide the knot between the 2 layers.... is your burning the ends exposed to add a made at home touch? Not being rude ,I dont polish my knife blades or brass on the handles to perfect so it looks man made not factory ... thx 4 the templates 🤘

Thanks sir for commenting and we appreciate it 🙂 as for the pricking irons, ours is relatively new though it's a diamond punch so the effect is unlike a pricking iron. And the for burning our thread ends, it's convenience and at thesame time most if not all of leather crafters burn their threads. It's preference but feel free to hide it, there's no right or wrong really 🙂

As a business owner, there are "many" leather business owners that do not ever have to hide the thread. If you look at allot of professional work, especially in the UK, If you sew it correctly, the ends will never come apart. The professionalism is not hiding the thread ends. Its making the threads pleasant to look at as a finished product. Most of your leather with hidden thread is for aesthetic look and not for function. It's overkill. However, that's just opinion and hiding your thread is a good thing too. I too like to hide my thread, but it also depends on what I am making, and the style of stitching I am using. Overall just remember, certain techniques, although are better than others, it also depends on convenience. Sometime ago I heard a story about putting a turkey in the oven. The mom always cut off the hind legs. The daughter always did this too but noticed allot of other people did not. When asked why she did it, she said it just made the turkey fit in the oven because the oven was smaller. Your threading technique will improve over time, just remember, its not just the threading technique, its the consistency of threading, your work, and threading technique. As for your punching leather, I am not sure what thread you are using, It looks like its not waxed, I could be wrong. However, that is not the point. Your punching is fine except that if you want a smoother punch, use bees wax on the end of the pricking irons. It will make your pricking irons easier to punch through the leather and removal is easier. Some professionals dont because they say it reduces waxy smudges, however I find that it is mostly preference. But as a reminder that in the UK, or in europe in general, thread is waxed because of the climate. Leather in right conditions mildew and wreck your leather. And especially for wallets etc, are in your back pocket. And it also depends on how the leather was conditioned. I have worked raw hide and many other leathers. Depending on the oils in the leather, will allow long time use, and may be handed down a generation or two. In these last a few decades, professionals in the leather working field have taken quantity over quality in their products. Some professionals have left the quality over looks. Ritza company makes thread with and without wax. I know fellow professionals who wax their thread in house as they work. I do not because it cuts down on production and it allows me to extend my leather life. I don't purchase alot of finished leather, I do all my own dying and leather finishing. However, depending on leather production, things will change but not my quality. I use only Veg tan Leather. Just remember, that the beeswax or wax on your thread reduces the wear and tear of the leather over time, maximizes the thread life, and reduces mildew where the thread holes are and extends the life of your leather as I said before. And as far as the thread ends, you don't have to change the thread, just use a smaller amount of thread at the end, and it seems like your already doing that. And to melt the threads your fine. You can still can use a lighter. Or use a thread zapper. Quite a few professionals use the thread zappers these days. I believe it's more about convenience when finishing off their leather. It reduces the amount of risk with burning the leather and the smudge of the melted thread. Your stitching is great. Just remember, for your threading look, its what, either your customers are looking for and what professional look "you" want. As a professional artist, your clients are going to be buying your work. That is what makes it unique. And as far as the technique, 90 days of correct stitching will get that perfect look. It seems that you already know what you want. So, keep on it. I use a different styles of pricking irons. But thread that I use is 6 or 8 Ritza Tiger thread on all of my work. Everything looks awesome. For sanding your edges, try using sand paper across your work bench flat instead of just doing the sanding all by hand. It will improve your flat consistency and will cut in half your hand sanding time If your on a tight budget. You probably already know it will be easier to use a drum sander. It will cut production time literally in half. You probably know all of this already, I sometimes need a recap. Sometimes the recap helps me in business decisions. Just remember, as you think that a business decision may be not worth the effort to change at the moment, be wise in your decisions. You are doing great. I will be following ya.

This is good but using it on your keys is not good for the ignition on your car. Extra weight will increase wear on metal. 🙂

Thank you for your comment sir, I have been carrying a lot of keys with my car keys too for 7 years and I have to check if it is causing this type of wear on my ignition. Fingers crossed! but my car is still up and running too with my bulky key stash 🙂

@@roseleathercraftsph You must punch each layer if you can't punch all layers well. Use a thinner thread. Never end the stitch like that. Hide the ends of the thread between the layers.
