Making a leather purse by hand

Hand made a purse for my sister's birthday.
This is not an in-depth how-to. In this video I bash my way through making my first leather project: a purse. I acknowledge I am not an expert on leather working - I learned much working on this project.
I realize the purse looks a little rough. The project took me ~25 hours from start to finish, 8.5 hours of which I caught on film. I tried to capture the most significant steps in the crafting process. I am going to continue to make leather projects in the future and will upload similar videos!
Let me know what you think!

Good job; I know how difficult it is to work leather as a beginner. I know this was published a little over 3 years ago, but a few things that have made my life much easier when I started working leather: a leather sewing machine (not a regular machine that can also sew leather, they break too easily), a dremel (even though I use the sewing machine most of the time, when I do have to hand stitch, I use a small drill bit to drill the holes- much easier then the punch), and a rubberized art board and circular cutter (the art boards cover a larger area, so you don't have to move the item around as much, and has guides that make it helpful for measuring) the circular cutter makes cutting straight edges so much easier. While a place like Tandy has most of the tools, you can easily get the common ones on Amazon, eBay, home depot and Michaels, much cheaper. Good luck!

I've seen a lot of people making things out of leather but none were dressed like they just got home from the office

lol well... it WAS what I did after I got home from the office. I would've either filmed myself in the office clothes, or pajamas. Didn't wear anything else during the week!

BTW, Alexander, you are a great brother, so sweet and thoughtful to make, rather than buy, such a beautiful gift. I hope she realizes how much you put into it. #laboroflove

@alexanderbaran-harper4748 10 лет назад
Thank you for your kind words. I finished off the stitch with double back. I then made sure both ends of the thread were on the inside of the bag and finished with a drop of super glue.

I wonder if you know the plastic piece used at the base of some handbags, I need it for another reason but don't know what its called..the plastic kitchen cutting boards are too flimsy, I need plastic a bit sturdy yet flexible..not too flimsy and someone suggested I use the same material they use for handbag bottoms.

not sure if you stated it anywhere but what kind of dye did you use? I have never worked with leather and I'm just looking to make a two-colored belt and while I'm at it, where would one acquire leather, if you'd know?
@alexanderbaran-harper4748
@alexanderbaran-harper4748 10 лет назад
I purchased most of my leather working stuff at Tandy Leather (check 'em out online!). I suppose it depends where you're from. I think Tandy is both in the states and Canada. The particular dye I used was the Tandy brand water based Eco-Flo (sp?) dye. Definitely do the belt! Belts made of real leather last forever and a custom one will become the pride of your outfit!

Wow, first project? It's such a good work, I love it. I'm a beginner and honestly I don't know half the tools you used. Would you be so kind to make me a list of the tools you used? I don't know the name so it'd be a little hard to find them. I'm espacially looking for that metallic tool you used during the snap installation, the one at 14:00 more or less, when you were using the hammer. I've been looking for some stuff here in Italy, but unfortunately where I live we don't have many shops where to buy leather tools, so I may have to look on the web. Thank you and keep up the good work :D
@alexanderbaran-harper4748
@alexanderbaran-harper4748 9 лет назад
Thank you! Instead of making a list of what I used, perhaps I could better direct you to the company where I bought everything: Tandy Leather Factory. They had local outlets where I lived in Canada. Their website shows all the different standard tools you can use. This company even published videos on RU-vid showing you how to use the different tools. A great resource for an absolute beginner in my opinion. The tool you asked about specifically is a snap setter. I am surprised you can't find any leather working gear in Italy, of all places! Good luck hunting!

Hello, thank you for your answer. I will definitely have a look at that site and the videos. I want to learn something more about working the leather before making a big prchase. About not finding the working gear, unfortunately yes, I can't. Here in Catania, Sicily, we have many many and more shops who work the leather and make great stuff, but they don't sell the working gear so I need to find all of it on the web. Again, thank you very much :)

you must really love doing this. This is how I started and I know how hard and time consuming this is. You can use Dremel rotary tool to skive your leather, punch holes and to engrave designs , it will make things a lot easier. I didn't have enough money to buy me a skiving machine so I bought this and it does the job.Continue the good work :-)

Thanks for the feedback! When I graduate from school I may start acquiring the proper equipment. Right now I am moving around a lot and haven't had the opportunity to establish anything permanent. I will keep this in mind!

Very interesting about using a Dremel to skive with. I'd really like to see how that's done. Skiving is my biggest headache.

Amazing work! If I may know, what kind of dye you were using? If u dont mind, please let me know of the name of the dye brand. Also, what kind of leather u were using? Real or fake? If real, is it faux leather or just the basic one? Cow/goat? Great job though! :)

Hi there! The leather is real leather. Cow leather. Actually, I can be even more specific and say that everything I used in the creation of this purse was purchased at the Tandy Leather Factory store. They have a website. The leather in particular was what is currently called 'Milled Double Shoulders,' 5-6oz weight. I found this leather to be particularly soft and tough. After the leather was dyed and finished it stiffened up a little. The video is now two years old, so the purse is two years old. My sister has been using it every day. It is still holding up great with hardly any damage - though it's clear it's being used. The leather has softened quite a bit too. The dye I used is of the 'Eco-Flo' series that Tandy carries. Deep Violet in particular. After application of the dye, the finish (Eco Flo Satin Shene) was applied. Now that the purse is two years old and has seen two Canadian summers and winters, the dye has REALLY faded. What was bright purple is now really showing the brown of the leather through, particularly on the flap side that has seen the most abuse and sun exposure. I would not recommend the dye for this reason, but I haven't tried any others.
