How to Make a Lionfish Containment Unit
Materials:
5 gallon water bottle with molded in handle
- from your local water delivery service or local store
6 Quart Funnel - I prefer the one made by Miller Manufacturing - Item #: 100021, or similar
- from your local hardware store such as Ace Hardware

- Little Giant Fill-Fast Funnel (6 Quart) - www.amazon.com...
2.5 gallon pail with ratcheting lid - often used for swimming pool chlorine
- 2.5 gal chlorine pail with lid from a local pool store
- 2.5 gal pail only - www.usplastic....

Large Zip-Ties
⅜” or ¼’ Post-Screws
- local hardware store
- 3/8 in. Aluminum Chicago Screws/Screw Posts (Qty 100 sets) - a.co/28AkSUh
Thread Lock for post-screws - I prefer the blue/temporary type for any future replacement of bucket top
Tools:
Cutting tool such as a Dremel tool
Drill
11/32” drill bit for zip tie holes in funnel
7/32” drill bit for post-screw holes in water bottle and for drain holes in bottom of water bottle
Side cutters/Wire cutters for excess zip-tie length

I've seen a couple other designs for this. This one seems the best one I've seen. I'm going to be making a couple myself.

Personally I believe using a wide PVC pipe with a funnel up front and double (spaced out from each other) mesh in the back would be better. Easier to move around and lighter since the water can run out (coming from someone who only does shore dives)

I’m going to be learning how hunt them in December. Going to make your bucket, thanks for sharing in such detail. Can you recommend a good inexpensive spear and shears for removing the spines?

This is what I use: www.aplusmarine.com/25-x-12-pole-spear-with-stainless-steel-paralyzer_p_20.html. Some prefer the trident tip over the paralyzer one. If you really want to remove the spines, use medical grade shears. I don't cut them off. I sell most of what I shoot, and once you get comfortable cleaning them, you can do it just fine with the spines still on.

Very nice. Built with experience. Explained so well I think I could build one. I will be down there next week. Planning to go to dolphin reef. Have not been there yet. Please take care of all the lion fish before we get there. If my wife were to get stuck by one I will have to sell the boat. If you see a blue yamaha center console jet boat with two pretty women and two ugly men in it come by and say hello.

Thinking about trying to use an orange rubber traffic cone in place of the plastic funnel. Any opinion on that modification? Think it would work okay?

It’s worth a try! Depending on the cone material and thickness, I’d think you may still need to drill some holes where you plan the expansion slits you cut in the cone to end to help prevent them from ripping further when stressed when larger fish are pushed through. Let me know how it works!

Yes, the venom is protein based and it denatures with heat.

Once it is full of water, not at all. When I roll in off the boat I am holding it between my knees. I usually go in heavy, so when I first hit the water and begin my descent, I can tell it holds my back for just a couple of seconds. The water fills in quickly through the funnel end.

LOL! Nope! I asked him if he would be interested in sponsoring any of my videos if I gave him some advertising. He was kind, but had very little interest. Maybe a free refill if a new customer mentioned they learned about the store from any of my videos. Since he isn't doing the online sales any longer, he saw the potential benefit to him as very low. I included an ad in a couple and have mentioned the store in some of my descriptions. No big deal.
