Lionfish are one of the sea's most dangerous invaders, and their populations have exploded in recent decades. They can survive in all kinds of conditions, including cold waters 1,000 feet deep, and have been found in the Atlantic and Gulf coast of Florida. Lionfish can reproduce within the first year, and they reach maturity and spawn about 30,000 eggs each time. And have been found in fresh water

Fun fact: these lion fish are actually not native and became an invasive species for the reefs of Colombia. The lionfish were imported with the intention of controlling the local parrotfish population that had been eroding the reef since their is coral. These lionfish quickly became so successful that the government subsidized hunting them with a bounty and restaurants began to serve them on their menus, but due to their spines and general structure, they are very difficult to prepare and never quite caught on as a staple food item.

@@SorenCicchini Because it's true. Lionfish typically just aren't targeted with rod and reel due to their relatively small size. Sure, it's possible, but a lot of people just aren't going to bother. Classic confusion between "venomous" and "poisonous"! Venomous describes a toxic response through defensive or offensive (predation) means through the use of a weapon-like medium such as fangs, spines, claws, etc. Poisonous is a toxic response through passive means like during digestion of a poisonous organism, but doesn't defend the victimized organism from actual predation moreso than it suggests or ensures that "if you eat me, you will die too!"

@@stevekettelson7368 its not that much range. the average load of a 9mm would only allow the bullet to travel 1-2 feet in regular diving conditions. i would understand the ease of use but I think a traditional speargun would be better. the only issue is all these items are heavily regulated in other countries that prevent recreational divers to own one.

So does the Gov't where they are require tags n licenses to catch lionfish? Where i live we have an issue with prussian carp and for some stupid reason, we're required to have a license and have to use a plain J hook with a maggot or worm, instead of actually dealing with the problem properly and just allowing anybody to catch them in any way possible with no limits Ya know, the Gov't way.
